The latest version of the Btwin Triban 500 road bike has now been reduced from £280 to £250. As a starter bike for someone looking to try out road biking or even as a daily commuter road bike then this really cant be beaten on price without going into the 2nd hand market. Having started riding some 5 years ago with the original Btwin Triban 3 I can honestly say I don't think there are better bikes available at this sort of price range.
Btwin also score highly on reviews by road.cc and cycling weekly the later being very impressed with the Flat bar version of the 500: - http://www.cyclingweekly.co.uk/reviews/road-bikes/btwin-triban-500-flat-bar-road-bike.
Adult sizes available are XXXS to XL
Also kids sizes (what a way to get them started) XXXS and XXS

Good price for a solid, basic starter bike, if you are thinking of trying out road biking without breaking the bank. Comes with Decathlon's one year satisfaction guarantee.

Is this an improvement on the Triban 3? I note that it has steel forks rather than carbon ones. Also, the Cycling Weekly review was for the flat bar version - does that make any difference?

It is an updated version of the original red Triban 3 with a different frame but without the carbon fork (steel instead which is heavier but should still provide some vibration damping). It can take wider tyres and more easily accommodate mudguards, rack etc. Which makes it more versatile (though I was able to configure my T3 as a tourer for a three day trip). The main difference between the flat bar and drop version will obviously be the way the gears are configured and operated. Some using for shorter rides and commutes might prefer the flat bar version.

Not as good a deal as the Carrera Vanquish now on sale at Halfords for £264. Unlike the Triban 500, has carbon fork and Claris front and rear mech set and the whole bike weighs 10.6 kg.
Thanks for posting, think I might plump for that one.

It came with 23mm but you can get 25mm on according to many T3 riders. It was my first road bike and I was happy with 23mm. My T520 came with 25mm as standard.
