Found this while looking for a new phone for the Mrs as her iphone 5 is getting a bit slow. Iphone 6 Space grey/silver/gold 16GB all available like new on o2 refresh and for only £189.99. I know its 16GB but its only £189.99 almost close to moto g prices so that's not too bad Shirley?

To get the price to £189.99 click on Almost Perfect on 16GB then choose the tariff which is 20GB Data £69.99 upfront and £5 monthly device payment plan.

So Upfront £69.99 +
£5 x 24 = £120 = Total £189.99

Better get back to work the wifey thinks I'm talking to somebody called Shirley.....

For those that are fearful of an early termination fee...

OK so this is how it works:

Step 1 : Buy phone as above with the above listed plan.

Step 2: Wait for phone to arrive. Once it has arrived put the O2 sim into the phone and make a 10-20 second phone call to activate the phones IMEI on O2's system (You need to do this if you want to unlock the phone to use any sim card)

Step 3: Next go to O2's online unlock webpage to unlock your phone for free: https://www.o2.co.uk/apps/help/help?qid=1&q1=2&route=unlocking&case=Handset%20Unlocking%20Form

Step 4: Once unlock request is done it takes 1-7 days to unlock. I would recommend you wait until the phone is unlocked before doing the next step.

*update* It seems you don't need to wait for the unlock to complete before cancelling. You must however request the unlock and confirm with o2 on the phone that unlock is processing before cancelling airtime contract just to be on the safe side.

Step 5: Once the phone is unlocked successfully ring 02 and tell them you want to pay off the device plan which should be £5 x 24 = £120 and you want to also at the same time cancel the airtime. Now o2 customers services representatives are known to be a bit slow so you might need to speak to someone who is on the ball. They should then cancel the airtime and you would have paid off the phone so you have a fully unlocked iPhone 6 for only £189.99.

PS: Some people have stated that o2 sometimes do not cancel the airtime contract part and they get sent bills afterwards, to avoid this I would recommend after you have cancelled the airtime after a few hours or days contact o2 support again and confirm that they have cancelled the airtime plan and get them to confirm in writing.

I know its a bit of a long winded way to get the phone but if all goes well should be worth it

Go to an Apple store. Also, keep in mind that even after the first year warranty expires, Apple will often replace phones within the second year under consumer law regulations (my sister just had her 18 month 64GB iPhone 6 replaced by the Apple store in London - for free  )

I had £1,171 taken, as I had ordered two phones and returned one. Cancelled the airtime on one and paid the device plan off. The other was returned completely not used or activated. Yet they still charged for both devices. That was on 23 August still waiting for a refund. Been told its on its way as I had to phone them again. Also took £30 but told only get £18 returned as they took into account the returned phone even though it was within 14 days....so i queried that as well so getting the extra £12 back also. So still waiting!

Well I thought it had gone far too easily. Cancelled contract and paid off phone on the day it arrived with lovely lady on the phone. Confirmed a couple of days later via chat that cancel was going through. Then I received a bill for £600, online chat told me they would refund and I would see it credited back in 3 days. Two weeks later and still no refund -£600 still on bill which is due to go out of my account in 2 days. Online chat yesterday said I had been credited but I can only see a huge bill. Am I missing something?

Just to update all,

today I had £30:16 credited/refunded back to my bank account, so thats me clear now after earlier demands and money taken from my account

this is the fourth 02 refresh deal off HUKD I have done
and yes each one requires a few phone calls to sort out the mess 02 make of the billing system (you would think they would learn by now)

so thats 3 iPhone deals and a Samsung Galaxy S5 thanks to the O/P's and HUKD

ohh and by the way I never get charged anything for the few days I have the phone, don't see why i should as i have not used it and its been returned within the 14 day cooling off period

Following my £30 bill and being told don't worry it will be refunded via your final bill

well that landed for -£25:14, also very intresting on the bill it had me down as making a number of text messages, which I know for certain (100%) I never made

anyway just phoned up and they said they would credit me £5 however I will have to wait until next month's bill
TechNet
15 Aug 16 #809
You had quite a lot of opportunity to notice the extra money taken out over a period of 2 years though, so i would say after a few months of the wrong amount being take you should have contacted them.

If you can afford £600 to come out of your account then fair enough. But if it comes out and makes you go into an overdraft or incur fees because of O2 messing up then surly you would expect to be compensated. It is not a small error on one bill.

Today i also got a bill for £570 and they have already taken £30 by direct debit.

Rang up to complain and the adviser filled in a "CCR" form and said it will be adjusted by next week and i should ring to check. She did advise i cancel the Direct Debit but as others i am reluctant to do this as it will damage credit ratings.

Its annoying but i am happy for it to go out and be credited back to me. However if they have done this to everyone they need to be reported or at least compensate people they have done this too.

Further question regarding unlocking.

I have received phone, have made several calls but in My O2 under Device Details I can't see my IMEI or be able to proceed with unlocking phone. This is approx 15 hours after first call.

So I received my 16gb in gold last monday on this deal and it came in an 02 box. I have to admit it looked brand new and was happy as larry until thursday when it just switched off and died for good. I rang O2 up and they offered a doorstep exchange for saturday which I agreed. A few hours later I get a text message to be told it's out of stock. Cue another phone call and they offered an exchange for silver or slate which I wasn't too happy with unless it was the next size up, so they offered a 64gb in silver which i agreed. Saturday morning and no sight of this phone. Cue another phone call and I was told they shouldn't have offered me the 64gb but as it was on my notes, they'll honour it for monday morning delivery which duly arrived only to find I am now the owner of a BRAND NEW SEALED BOXED 64gb Iphone 6 in silver. Despite the initial problems, I am absolutely made up. Just about to nip to CEX and sell my iphone 5 32gb for £94 so this is a steal of an upgrade for a grand total of £96..

I ordered the iPhone 6 16gb silver on Sunday. The phone was delivered on Monday and it was in perfect condition, not a mark on it! Apple warranty until November 2016 as well.

On Monday, I put the O2 sim in and made a 20 second call. I then went on live chat and asked for it to be unlocked. I was told it would take 24 hours.

On Tuesday, I didn't get any email that it had been unlocked, so I went onto My O2 on the website and requested the unlock on there.

On Wednesday I got confirmation of the unlock code via email, and I then completed the unlock via iTunes.

On Thursday, I didn't get a chance to ring O2 to cancel contract.

On Friday, I rang O2 and asked to cancel. I paid the balance of £120 and the airtime was cancelled also. I was told I would get 2 bills. The first would be for the full £30 and the second would state I was due a refund of most of the £30. I would only be charged for the few days the line was active. I would have to ring up to process this refund.

I also had it confirmed on this phone call that the phone was still 12 month O2 warranty. If I took the phone to apple for repair, and they swapped it for a different iPhone, as long as I kept all the paperwork showing the swap had been done, then my 12 month O2 warranty would still be valid.

Thanks OP....excellent deal!!!

Those that have managed to get a new replacement handset where original was faulty:
1. What was the fault on the original iphone?
2. Did original come with Apple warranty?
3. Was the fault reported within 14 days?
4. Was the fault reported to O2 or Apple?
5. How was the fault verified by O2/Apple?
6. Did you return and receive replacement separately or swapped at the same time?
7. Did replacement arrive in original Apple box with UK plug etc or just the handset in non-branded box?

I've sent a request already but it won't be accepted if my IMEI is not on their system. I've read comments saying people sent request and cancelled their airtime straight away after getting their phones but the 2 live chat people k have spoke to have said I had to wait 24-48 hours before I can request it to be unblocked :/

Hi is anyone else having trouble with unlocking their phones? I have made a 10-20 second call and sent of a couple of unblock requests and went onto live chat. However speaking to the person on live chat they said i need to use the phone 24-48 hours and then request for my phone to be unlocked as requesting for an unblock just less than 24 hour of receiving the phone will end up in rejection ;/. Now i do not want to wait that long but then again i do not want to cancel airtime for my unblock request to be rejected.
Does anyone have advice?

Do it through the My O2 app.

There's no guarantee that you'll definitely have Apple warranty. However, some people on this thread have checked their phones and discovered they've got 10 months of warranty remaining...(whereas some others have discovered their phones are more than a year old - and thus have none)

Sorry i should have been more clear, What i meant was you dont need to make a call with the "new sim" in order to pay off the phone. To make the payment for the phone plan you have to call, they have an 0344 landline number or you can ring 202 from any o2 sim. However cancelling airtime can be done via chat

since paying off the phone and cancelling the airtime the pay monthly account has been completely erased from my o2 online account, purchase history & account billing all gone?! , even the details of my iphone 5s [purchased from the refresh deal here a few months back] all disappeared!

There are conflicting reports about the O2 warranty status (consensus seems to be that it still stands).
However, if you have Apple warranty, then you really don't need to worry about additional breakdown warranty.

I would expect insurance to cover warranty related issues and neither would I expect a warranty to cover insurance related issues.

Hi, I'm wanting to use a current o2 contract with one of these until that contract finishes I'm November. So may be obvious, but do I just put my current o2 sim in the phone when it arrives make a call, then cancel contract and pay off phone or do I have to put new sim in first? You dont need to make a call in order to pay off the phone. I cancelled my airtime and paid off the phone before it was even delivered. Unlocking is not a problem as i have a pay monthly o2 sim which i have used to link with the phone and then requested the unlock.

Heed my warning. Myself and my wife took the iPhone 6 refresh deal which we were told was cancelled (Monday) we have today been sent a bill for £600 which is o2s mistake which they've said we have to pay and be refunded 14 days later or it'll show as a missed payment on our credit file. I already had this £600 bill since monday as i cancelled before receiving my first bill so my account showed £600 due when the bill generated. However a friend of mine that also ordered he cancelled airtime paid off phone plan on monday but this was after his bill was generated so initially his account showed that he owed £30. Today his bill has been altered and shows the £600 bill so i would be surprised if they dont alter everyones bills to reflect this £600 charge.

Can anyone help?

Like the dunce that I am, I didn't follow the instructions properly posted on here (I know, I know!) and just called O2 straight away to pay off phone, get it unlocked and cancel contract. The customer service advisor did it all then and there for me so I thought everything was going to be ok. I called up a couple of days later to check what had happened as I'd heard nothing about the unlock and she said there's a note on the account that says it couldn't be processed because
the IMEI number hadn't been registered or whatever. Was on hold for ages and she spoke to her manager etc. And the manager eventually processed it and put through the unlock request. As I cancelled the contract straight away the O2 sim went straight off and I haven't been able to do anything since. It's been a day now since the second request (done by the manager) so am I just being impatient or is it just not going to work. Any advice?

3. How long this Agreement lasts

3.1 This Agreement starts when we accept your application (the day you receive your SIM Card) or, if you don't receive your SIM Card when you sign up (for instance if you buy online), on the day your SIM Card is dispatched.

from here
http://www.o2.co.uk/termsandconditions/mobile/our-latest-pay-monthly-mobile-agreement

And I think if you read the Refresh specific FCA terms at point 5 it talks about the agreement being signed when you take it out (as it's essentially a loan), so the date you order is the date it starts (stands to reason).

You've answered your own question; ordered on 22/07 (like we all did) - you cancelled on 27/07 = 6 days.

Rightly or wrongly, the contract kicks off even though you can't use it (as you don't yet have the SIM card) as soon as you order.
Preying_Eyes
27 Jul 16 #668
There are two things wrong with it.
a) I ordered the phone on 22nd and received it on 25th and cancelled it on 27th. I should only be charged for 3 days and not 6 days
b) I used the same technique about two years ago for IPhone 5s and there was a cooling off period of 7 days to cancel airtime and nothing to pay. Not sure if it is still applicable but will find out.

Why is it not the case? Hasn't it been 6 days since you ordered up to today? If so then it is right.

Your only 'mistake' was waiting for the unlock before cancelling, I did the 2 within minutes of each other, and as we ordered on Friday, will pay for 3 or 4 days (probably 4 =£4 or so).
seancharles
27 Jul 16 #648
Don't do this its not worth the hassle. We ordered. They came Monday. We rang to cancel. Yesterday we got a final bill for £30. We rang to say it was wrong and was told a correct bill for 1 day usage would be issued. Today we have a bill for £600 which is the full tariff. This has happened to both myself and my wife as we both took separate contracts. It's a nightmare we go on holiday today and they take the direct debit in 14 days. No chance it'll be sorted so now we will likely incur bounced DD fees from the bank too

Just been told that as per the O2 policy, Once a contract gets cancelled then the warranty cannot be claimed.
As I have cancelled the airtime, paying off the phone plan is also a form of cancelling. Therefore my contract is now disconnected with O2 and the warranty can only be provided by the manufacturer.

26 Jul 16 #610
They've been altering their t&c's since I last did Refresh. I guess they're trying to stop people doing what everyone on this thread has done .

So I guess the trick going forward is to confirm that you have some manufacturer warranty with Apple. If the phone has zero Apple warranty, then send it back...(or keep it - but be aware that O2 no longer deal with warranty stuff on such phones).

The O2 Refresh gravy train has become a little less enticing.
TechNet to hukd1989
26 Jul 16 #638
Where is this stated in the T&Cs? I have read most of mine.

Also paying off the Device Plan is not a form of cancelling, if you cancel it you need to return the device and you would not pay the device off. All you are simply doing is paying off the remainder of the credit you have taken out with them. You have still purchased a device with 12 months warranty (as far as i can see).

As for the Airtime side of it yes, you are cancelling and they have no penalty clause for refresh customers.

It still doesn't change the fact you have purchased a device with advertised 12 month warranty.

Warranty if an iPhone is purchased directly from Apple is 6 years from purchase date under EU rules.

well I've just phoned up, paid off the device plan, asked to cancel the airtime

was asked, why I wanted to cancel, just said I wanted the phone
I was then transfered to retentions, after a short wait I was informed as it was under 14 days it was fine

I queried my balance and that was it, all sorted, yes was the answer
no mention of anything else

just to be on the safe side (and as mentioned in the thread) tomorrow I will go on live chat to confirm everything is closed with a zero balance

Thanks again to the OP

as for people concerned with the 02 warrenty, I wouldn't worry to much
you should be able to take it back to any apple shop in the event of a problem

I bought an iphone 5 on ebay, it developed a problem, took it back to apple

So the final bill is not scheduled a month after the first bill but 14 days after the termination date but the DD payment is normally scheduled 10 working days clear of that.

If the unlock has gone through then the sim is no longer needed. You will receive an email confirming the unlock anyway. Remote unlocks, iphones do not require codes. You simply just need to connect to itunes, can also be activated via Wifi.

I cancelled mine on sunday, so 14 days is 7th aug, on o2 account it says £600.16 will be deducted on or around 8th aug. So they will initially take £600.16 first right? so the credit im due will that be in the next bill (sept)?

With sim due to go dead anytime, I hope I will get notification by email of the unlock?? Will it simply get unlocked remotely or they will provide an unlock code?

Now need to leave the DD active until they take the £30 upfront line rental. The final bill is produced 14 days after cancelation which will then refund the bulk of that £30, leaving aside rental charge for the couple of days the line was active.

I can then go to the below link to request the credit balance to be refunded to my bank account:
https://www.o2.co.uk/apps/help/help?qid=1&q1=34
Alternatively one call them to request the refund.

Cancelling DD ahead is not advisable as a late payment can impact credit score!

I am going through this with o2 right now having bought the Iphone Se in May they lumped £700 onto my account 'early termination fee' and they cant correct the bill within the month it has to rollover before you see it corrected so the £700 came out my account a week before going on holiday and i had to get the bank to do an indemnity claim as o2 would not or could not stop this amount coming out! Still waiting on this being sorted as i found due to the indemnity claim that cancelled my direct debit and payment got missed so who know what state my credit history is in as last letter was a default sum notice threatening debt collectors!! Safe to say i will not be doing another refresh deal with early pay off.

The iphone I received is a bit temperamental, keep going unresponsive. But I have paid off the device and cancelled the airtime. Do I contact O2 about a exchange or go to the Apple store and ask for replacement as it is in warranty?
TechNet to g2v1n
26 Jul 16 #573
I would go via O2, simply because going via Apple you would end up with a different IMEI which O2 will not have on the system as the phone they sent you.

Also your warranty is technically with O2 as they have provided the 12 month warranty.
TechNet to g2v1n
26 Jul 16 #577
Also, i would make sure you have the latest iOS download and maybe reset the handset fully to see if this resolves the issue.
TechNet
26 Jul 16 #576
Yes, i think it was mentioned before in the thread. Just because you have paid off the device early the 12 month warranty still stands.

As for repairs i'm not sure they do. I think they will simply replace it for another handset. But this way they will know about it and the warranty continues.

With regard to the refund of overbilled airtime, I was told that my account will show the balance owing, and there'd be a button to request refund, in other words, not automatically refunded.

And as for warranty, my box said Feb 2016 on it, and Apples page said out of warranty, but that makes no difference in law to O2 offering a 12m warranty, they cannot legally remove this just because of the airtime cancellation, the 2 are completely separate (as their own system proves)

I called 202, got connected and hung up. When I phoned this evening to cancel I advised her of this and she didn't say anything about needing to be connected for 24 hours before requesting unlock. 25 Jul 16 #552
Since I haven't seen it mentioned, you need to use the sim for at least 24 hours and a make a 1 min call to a number other than 202 before you request the unlock or it won't go through as your number won't be linked to your IMEI yet. Just had to contact 02 and re-activate my airtime plan so that I could get the phone unlocked. Besides that, have been told that I'll only have to pay for the days I use of airtime not the 30 days, so if they say 30 days try another adviser and everything else went smoothly. iPhone's in perfect condition, no marks at all.

So if i dont cancel the direct debit and let them take it out. When they credit it back will it go straight back into my bank out or will it be credited into my o2 account? I remember when o2 broadband was around and they had to credit my final bill, the credit was sent to my o2 account from which i then had to claim it back.

They sent mine as a cheque.

That isn't true. The phone merely has to connect to your account. You can see if it has done so by signing into your account and seeing if the account page lists the iPhone as the active device. Assuming it is, you can unlock the phone via the button on that same account page.

Just means your phone is older than 1 year old. No biggie. You still get 12 months O2 warranty.

If you cancel your direct debit, and they try to take payment and it fails, then it will almost certainly be marked on your credit file.

Just leave the direct debit intact - and if they overcharge you, claim it back. Better that than the alternative!
julieblake507
25 Jul 16 #547
I was also told to cancel the direct debit and pay the new bill when it comes as otherwise I will pay the months fee and have to request a refund. But....I can't cancel my direct debit until they take the money so guess I will have to ask them to reverse it when it goes through. My bill is only going to be £11/31 as it's just for one day.

Doesn't really bother me as my wifes on o2 anyway so her sim will work. He said you have already been billed, but you'll be refunded the vast majority of it as billing date was just yesterday! Received the phone today and i must say i am pleasantly surprised. I did not see a single scratch or blemish. The phone did come in a crappy box though but securely fastened by some sort of plastic wrap. phone came with sim pin and usb cable.

First thing i did was call 202, left it hanging for 45 seconds and then hung up. Next i went to the o2 live chat to unlock the phone, guy said unlock process went through fine and will be unlocked in 7? days i also made sure to ask if i cancel the air time today will it still be unlocked and he said yes.

Next i called up o2 by dialing 202, selecting option 1, then option 2 and then the option where the lady says "if your are thinking of leaving o2 press 4". I talked to a very friendly guy he asked me why i wanted to cancel the air time i just told him it was too much and that was that. i paid off the phone and he cancelled the air time. i made sure to quadruple check that i would not be charged £30 for this month or an absurd amount like £30x24 for cancelling early. all i was going to be charged was £120 for paying off the phone and something like £2 for using 2 days of air time.

sorry for the wall of text but overall process was very smooth and im very happy.

Mine has warranty until January 25th 2017. Not too bad.

Ask them why that's the case. There must be a reason several people have told you the same thing.

All I said was I'd like to pay off the device and cancel the airtime. All done within 15 mins. I requested the unlock via their app. Hope it goes through ok.

My unlock came in this afternoon, received the email from o2 about 4 times lol.

Just a note to everyone, it seems you don't need to wait for the unlock to complete before cancelling the airtime as long as you have done it on their form or over the phone with a representative the unlock should still go ahead even if you have cancelled the airtime contract. I requested unlock and cancelled on Saturday and my unlock came in today (Monday) so took 2 days in total.

Received the phone this aft, called to pay off handset and cancel airtime in one..

It's already been disconnected! Great stuff from o2! Phone showing no service and when I log into my o2 it shows the disconnect.

I requested the unlock via chat AFTER this phone call even though it's SIM and number are now disconnected - and it's still gone through fine.

I do it in this order so I'm not waiting for it to unlock with my airtime live, which could be days (but last time unlocked in about 5 hrs)

I did it this way on another refresh deal a few months back and everything was perfect.

Hopefully this may help someone to know it can still be unlocked after its disconnected.

Your private messaging is disabled - so I couldn't reply to your PM.

But in summary; I've ordered about 10 or so Refresh deals over the past few years. I had zero issues with 7 of them...and 3 billing issues with the others - one of which ended up with me having £800 taken from my account (no problem for me - and it was returned quickly anyway).

I haven't done a Refresh deal for a while - but I certainly wouldn't be concerned about doing so. It's the best way to get cheap/quality phones (without going down my current preferred roulette method of Gumtree  )

Oh, and the only reason I missed the £800 overcharge issue was because I had ordered 3x Lumia 1020's at the same time...and lost track of what had been paid off/what hadn't

I would wait until the phone is confirmed as being on its way to you...then cancel. You don't want to cancel your contract before it's been posted, then have O2 tell you that the phone is out of stock - because then they'd have zero obligation to try and source a replacement (brand new for instance).

"That's not possible. I can only set your account for cancelation on 23/08/2016. "
"if you check the tems and conditions of your contract, when you cancel the account, 30 days notice is mandatory."

Any ideas?

Hi

My Iphone 6 16gb gold arrived this morning. It looks brand new! As per the steps the OP outlined I made a quick call to activate the IMEI, then phoned 02. I explained that I wanted to pay off the device in full, request an unlock and cancel the airtime plan. The first person I spoke to requested the unlock for me and stated that a code and instructions for me to follow for the unlock, will be with me within 72 hours. I was then put through to the retention team where another person took my payment for the phone and she requested the airtime plan to be cancelled. She said the cancellation will come into effect tomorrow and that I will only pay for 1 day of the airtime plan. I will let you know how that turns out, as I should get the bill around 8th August.

Many thanks to the Op for pointing out this deal, as I would never have been able to get this phone otherwise.

The terms of the warranty doesn't change. It's only the airtime plan being cancelled - the device plan is still being paid in full...and thus entitles you to all the normal consumer protection (plus O2's warranty commitment).

Incidentally - I had to send one of my Lumia 1020's for repair from a previous Refresh deal...which O2 dealt with without any issues (as I expected having asked the same questions prior to purchasing it).
wenttoabetterplace
25 Jul 16 #434
If it's any consolation, you're the only person I've seen on this thread with a DOA phone. So you've just been really unlucky (I'm sure O2 will get a replacement sent out asap - you may even get an upgrade to a brand spankers phone given that these Like New ones are out of stock)

wenttoabetterplace
25 Jul 16 #432
It depends on whether the original owner registered with Apple (unlikely as they'll have more than likely given the phone back in the 14 day cooling off period).

As with all refurbs, if it hasn't already been registered by a different owner, then you'll get the balance of the warranty with Apple (which may be most of the year, or just a few months...or none).

O2's warranty is solid though

Guys I have been told by o2 rep that once they have put in your unlock request you can cancel the airtime contract as long as you have paid off the device part the unlock should still go ahead.

Also to not get any credit rating problems I would recommend not cancelling the direct debit until you have received your final bill after cancellation which apparently takes a couple of weeks. Once the final bill has been settled there is no way for o2 to mess up your credit rating as everything owed to them has been paid, hope that makes sense.

Glad some of you guys have received mint phones mine had a slight scuff on the bottom :disappointed:

How do you go about cancelling that airtime then if people are getting charged it the second their phones arrive? Will O2 credit it back, or are you stuck with paying the first month's £30? If so, the price in the OP is misleading.

It is normal practice for the months line rental to be charged upfront. Also, the first month can be a part month potentially.

25 Jul 16 #359
Like most on here I ordered on Friday 23rd. Delivery was made today as expected but over the weekend I git an email from O2 with my first bill, starting from the day it was ordered rather than waiting for me to activate.

Is that normal practice?
Surely they can't charge for airtime when it wasn't available, can they?

A recent sim only order was placed on the 10th July, arrived on the 12th July, Due to work commitments, it wasn't actually inserted into the phone til the 15th July. However, a message from o2 said the first bill had been created and would come out of my Bank on the 24th July, so not quite 14 days usage in my case, but a full month due. It may well right itself at the end of the contract, but it seems they certainly want their money asap.

The credit search is already done and recorded on your file. If the score will be impacted, hopefully it's not gonna impact your mortgage application. Cancelling the contract as per terms should not be an issue. Please go ahead with receiving delivery and cancelling within 14 days as advised. Just keep a record of your current score and monitor it onwards. A slight drop should not impact your application negatively but in case it does, be prepared to write in to the concerned mortgage provider, as per details with the credit file. Chances are nothing to worry about but just be vigilant in case attention is required.

mubashar
24 Jul 16 1 #350
Credit score can be impacted by merely credit searches recorded on the file. The impact is more significant if one has say multiple searches recorded over a few months. In my experience, even opening one new credit account (which this effectively is) would impact ones credit score mildly. The another record is noted when the account is terminated. With day to day activity, I would not be concerned with opening a new account or two over a quarter, but if there is a mortgage application in process, it always better to err on the side of caution.

I've had credit application declines in the past and when I searched through my credit file, I found that there was a number of searches that were recorded on my credit file because of following MSE advise to sign up to new money saving bank accounts. In the cost saving culture, no one bothers to warn you of the consequences of closing long established credit lines and opening new credit lines that are not matured (old). I was able to get my credit card rejection reversed by sending in copy of my credit report prior to me conducting my credit tidy-up, which I showed was the cause of my score dropping drastically. I monitored the behaviour of my score for years after and was shocked at how easily they could edge away at the score.

I don't think you need to be worried but as I said, keep records of your score now and monitor onwards until your mortgage is finalised and try to avoid any new activity on your credit file until after the house deeds are done.

I ordered this phone as a replacement for my daughters iphone 4s which no longer holds it's charge properly. Does anyone know how old these phones could potentially be? My guess is they could be as much as 2 years old if returned at end of contract. If this is true then surely the battery could be at the end of it's natural life?

Any comments, thanks.

Unlocking via a pay monthly sim is free.
You dont have to do all this within the 14 days cooling off period, however you will have to pay airtime for each day the contract is still live thus incurring more cost on top of the £189.99.

I need a new phone because old one battery life goes quickly, do you think a 'like new' phone such as this will have a used battery or will be actually be like new..?
wenttoabetterplace to brutallogic
24 Jul 16 1 #331
If it is a return to O2 kind of refurb, then it will almost certainly have only be used for a maximum of 14 days (cooling off period).

If it is an iPhone that has been professionally refurbed by Apple, then it will have been completely overhauled back to as new condition (replacing batteries and what not).

So in short, judging by the reports from people who have already received these, you will essentially be getting a brand new phone (possibly with the most minor of cosmetic imperfections).
Tenex to brutallogic
24 Jul 16 #332
That's an interesting question.

When Apple refurbs its products it inserts a new battery. But Apple don't refurbish iPhones except for those swapped out under AppleCare. These are not refurbished by Apple so they'll almost certainly have the original battery unless that was the point of failure when they were new.
wingatewood to brutallogic
24 Jul 16 #338
Good question, I have already ordered one of these phones to replace my daughters iphone 4 that no longer holds it's charge. I would have thought that these phones could vary in age from 14 days (cooling off period) right up to 2 years old (returned to upgrade after the end of a 2 year contract). If your lucky you may get the former, unlucky if you get the latter. A 2 year old battery would not make this deal such a good deal after all surely?

I would be more than happy for somebody more knowledgeable to correct me if I am wrong as I have already ordered this phone, thanks.

One question. Im going to recieve the phone tommorow and i was wondering if i could pay the phone off and cancel the airtime tommorow ( so i save money on the airtime). And not unlock the phone, but get my brother to unlock it for me after as he's on o2??
hukd1989 to 5reds
24 Jul 16 #335
Yeah sure you can, you just need to get your brother to inset his sim card in your phone and make the chargeable call / text so that the handset is registered to his number. He can then request unlock from O2. Done it many times so i know this works.
hukd1989
24 Jul 16 #334
From my experience this first sim lock method is for phones purchased from Carphone warehouse. Their phones are locked to the network of the first sim you insert. I will try inserting a Three network sim card when i get the phone as their phones are unlocked so it should then hopefully remain unlocked. Failing that, i can just request unlock from O2, I've done it before and they are pretty quick with it.
wenttoabetterplace
24 Jul 16 #329
I'm pretty sure that every iPhone sold is locked on first sim (and NOT locked by the network provider). Certainly the case with O2 iPhone's...though of course, being refurbs, they may well already be locked to O2 courtesy of the previous returnee.
hukd1989
24 Jul 16 #328
If purchased from Apple directly then only would it be unlocked. From my experience, all network providers lock their phones for use on their network only. I've never had a phone from O2 which has been unlocked. I've always needed to contact them to get it unlocked. If you were buying from Three it would be unlocked as they no longer lock their handsets.

Asked about this on chat and like someone mentioned earlier in this thread you get charged 1 months airtime;

'As per the contract terms and conditions you can pay of the device cost only after your 1 Bill which will be 14 days from the date you get the phone delivered '
eslick to tntteen
24 Jul 16 #316
The first bill is generated even before you get the phone, once you pay off the phone and cancel the agreement you get a revised bill. The revised one shows how to get a refund for the amount paid, this is then returned to you in a few days. Some of the customer service guys will tell you to cancel the direct debit, this is a wise thing to do, once the first months bill has come out at around 14 days to stop them taking further cash.

Paying off any credit early should not affect anyone's credit rating, we did this a few months ago, credit file is the same as it was before.

Yes, if it's £69.99 upfront.

The deal is still very much live.
1. Sort Tariffs : by Monthly Data (low to high)
2. Then near the bottom click on "+ Show More" to list all the (hidden) options.
3. Select the lady one that is £69.99 upfront, £35pm (20GB data).
Of the £35pm you will pay off £5pm (x24) device fee upfront and cancel the commitment for the £30pm tariff charge as per O2 refresh T&C.
Hope that makes it a bit clearer.

I have followed a similar procedure to you this week and the unlock didn't go through, I think its because the airtime was cancelled before it was processed (they said it had been declined as the number was not on the system). Oh and unlock take upto 72 hours not 24, I am 48 hours into my second try at unlocking!

then pay off airtime and cancel the contract

2nd update:

Received phone yesturday went online and filled out the unlock form. O2 gave me an email today saying unlock unsuccesfull because my details didint match on the form

Called them up and they said they had no idea why the email said that and everything was correct on the form. Anyway they applied for the unlock for me on the phone and said it went through fine and i should get the unlock code within 24 hours.

At the same time I paid of the phone plan (£5× 24=£120) and then cancelled the air time part of the plan (£30). Now the lady on the phone said that she can cancel the airtime in two ways. 1st cancel after 30 days or second transfer my o2 number into payg sim and cancel it at the earliest date which is this teusday. Obviously i went for the tuesday option as it will cost me only 5 days of airtime payment whic xhould be £5. She did say the airtime was now cancelled but that the final bill will be generated on 7th August and thats when the final bill of £5 will be taken by direct debit so its best not to cancel my direct debit till then.

Sorry for the long response guys and was written on my phone quickly. Hopefully if all goes well now I should have an unlocked iphone 6 for the mrs for £194.

Will offcourse update once unlock goes through and if I face any problems.

Ordered 4th set. People no need to worry. If you have not concerned about too many searches on your credit, just close your eyes (not literally) and order. This is my 3rd year and 4th set. Actually you don't even have to wait for the unlock code to arrive before you cancel. I call them as soon as I receive my handset to payoff the handset, request unlock, and then cancel airtime. The call to them is the only call I make. The only issue is that they are crap sometimes and you might see an early termination charge. Just go to chat and then'll correct the bill to NIL or issue a credit straight away. Handset cost is the only cost I have paid. The almost perfect sets have been absolutely scratch less in my experience so far.

Hot!! Ordered in gold 10 mins ago. I specifically wanted the gold colour, so they are still coming in and out of stock if you're lucky...

P.s: I did this same 'o2 refresh' purchase but with the 5s for my fella (a few months ago on here) and had Zero issues cancelling airtime and paying off handset in advance.

And I got it unlocked via their chat *after* I cancelled airtime too! Took only a few hours for confirmation email to come through.

Great service from o2 and a great find from the OP <3

No, when you receive the phone, insert the sim, make a call then fill the form to unlock the phone normally takes 24 hours. Then ring them to cancel and say you want to pay off phone plan and cancel airtime. Then cancel DD.

AdzUK1981 to sleevelessmushroom
23 Jul 16 #244
No, as the contract is made up of 2 parts, the airtime and the monthly.

Thanks OP, ordered. I've done this in the past on handsets and never had an issue. I've even just spoke to an online o2 rep and had them confirm that i can cancel the contract any time i want and i simply pay off the remaining monthly payments - not the airtime. Chat log saved, just incase but i dont expect there to be any issues.

Missus prefers iphones over samsungs so she will get this, I'll sell her s7 edge and the difference is mine.

Thanks

Can anyone confirm this credit rating issue please? Iv ordered the iPhone yesterday, my issue is I received a mortgage offer yesterday to a property I'm purchasing that isn't available until December, is it worth the risk of losing the mortgage over an iPhone?
wenttoabetterplace to ryankingston

You've already received the mortgage offer? Can't see a problem then. They will surely have already run their checks in order to offer you the mortgage...
mubashar to ryankingston
23 Jul 16 #230
Most definitely, multiple credit searches over short period of time does bring down ones credit score.

I can't confidently say a single search will have absolutely no short term effect.

If it's a mortgage application, I would personally hold back with any credit searches / applications until after the mortgage has gone live.

23 Jul 16 #226
This has probably been said, but in all O2 refresh deals, there is a clause which allows you to cancel if you are not happy with the finance agreement, this is due to legislation that was brought in a few years ago with all this pre contract credit information malarky, you can legally cancel the contract and pay in full without penalty, it's all in the bumpf when you go to purchase.

23 Jul 16 #225
It won't pay out. The days of Quidco paying on Refresh deals are long gone...

Kate, it's just not true.

Just make sure you don't cancel your direct debit. O2 sometimes create a final bill of hundreds of pounds. If they try to take it and you've cancelled the direct debit, then you'll get a flag.

Just take out the contract, cancel it...wait for the final bill - confirm all is fine....and then move on to other things .

I haven't done a Refresh in a while - but when I did multiple ones, my Experian didn't budge an inch. You just have to make sure you do not cancel the direct debit.

Apologies, was typo, should have read 20GB:

The deal is still very much live.
1. Sort Tariffs : by Monthly Data (low to high)
2. Then near the bottom click on "+ Show More" to list all the (hidden) options.
3. Select the lady one that is £69.99 upfront, £35pm (20GB data).
Of the £35pm you will pay off £5pm (x24) device fee upfront and cancel the commitment for the £30pm tariff charge as per O2 refresh T&C.
Hope that makes it a bit clearer.

There's been a few people saying it affects your credit rating if you buy this and cancel. Apparently it comes up that you haven't paid the agreement off and one man said he had been turned down for a mortgage even though his rating had been good before taking this refresh on. Even though I'm not applying for a mortgage still wouldn't want a bad credit rating. If anyone could clarify please.

I think this is where some people are getting confused..

After clicking 'show more' tariffs, there are two options for 20gb plan.

One is: £0 upfront and £40 monthly
The other is: £69.99 upfront and £35 monthly - this is the one relating to this deal

You can click 'more details' for each tariff to see the total amount payable for the device on that tariff.

Pay as you go is a good option but they will not unlock it for free e.g. through a pay monthly sim. However you can get it unlocked for £15 from o2 by topping up the pay as yo go sim or around £10 from eBay.

This is the easiest option tough don't put in an o2 sim first, get a 3 sim put that in first and it won't lock to a network. 3 are the only company which don't lock to the phone and the phone only locks to the first sim. Have a look at the o2 5s threads from earlier this year plenty talk on there about it.

Ordered
this is the 4th 02 Refresh deal Ive had off HUKD

this to warn others, as per other deals
you my have a bit of hassel when canceling with getting charged etc

don't worry or panic, you just get back onto 02 and they will sort it, just be patient

also for the record as soon as you get the phone
turn off data, put the sim in call 202 put the phone down (its a free call anyway)
then request your unlock code, you can do this either by online via your account details, by livechat or call up
this takes about 24-48 hours, once you get the unlock code or instruction back
call 02 to pay off off the device plan

If you have had a myriad of credit you automatically lose points from your credit rating just for making the applications, irrespective of whether you keep up with payments or not. That is why card tarting and swopping current accounts for incentives can adversely affect your score. I work in the industry and there isn't a person in the UK with a 999 credit rating!

Sorry me ole beauty. But when you have had a myriad of different forms of credit, and paid them off without any hiccups along the way, credit agencies really struggle to dial the number back from 999. Sorry bud

No credit check & you don't need to be an O2 customer. I bought an iPhone 5s refurb a couple of months ago which I now use with Three . You need to choose a £10 top-up but they don't charge you for it - they just send you a SIM card for you to top-up yourself. Free next day delivery too.

16GB which is suitable for my needs as I don't put a lot of music, photos and movies on phones (put them all onto my laptop and external HDD). Faster than my old Nexus, I also used to have a iPhone 5 which booted up in a minute, the SE takes about 12 seconds to fully start up the phone (some of my friends with 5s and 6 couldn't believe it at first), and the battery is great considering previous iPhone batteries suck as the SE lasts me two days before requiring a charge.

I just rang up o2 pay monthly team, and they said even though I'm not an exsisting customer, i can have the refresh deal. I checked and yes you can get it unlocked and cancel your airtime contract, paying off the 24x 5 pounds, but you will be charged the one months airtime as well, because of the 30 day cancellation period, so it's another 35 pounds on top, but still a great deal.

Great deal I Followed all of the above and this was my result.
I got Apple IPhone on O2 Refresh back in March, except it took seven phone calls, six letters to O2 and two conference calls to Apple.
Over the space of five months to actually get it unlocked.
The south African call centre is the best they are so convincing, when they tell you they will get everything resolved. I got an internal email back between the call centre guy and his manager.
Guy “Can’t seem to unlock this customer get phone unlocked”
Manager “don’t know just leave it”.
Or how about the lovely UK call centres that we cherish. Called them to cancel the airtime and they stated cancelled it. I called back to check they did cancel it but secretly without my knowledge signed me up to a new one. 

In the early months of the iPhone 6, O2 were not unlocking them until the contract was paid in full, in this case it was when the fixed sum loan agreement which was in place was paid off in full, only then could you cancel the contract and unlock the phone. O2 are unlocking them in contract now so this will be easier to do, I still think it is a little bit of hassle to order this just to cancel the airtime agreement, but to be honest just send them a letter and cancel the direct debit, they can't argue with that can they?

Hot deal, tempting to get for my lad.

22 Jul 16 #60
This. I went with the similar O2 refresh iPhone SE deal in April, everything sorted quickly, paid off the phone contract and airtime (the unlock was taking the P so complained on Twitter which sorted it out). Sold my Nexus 5 with accessories for a cool£120 so got a brand new SE for £170. Checked that everything was paid off successfully which it did and at the end of the month got a letter from O2 confirming it.

22 Jul 16 #58
And to add to Step 3, if O2 try any dodgy stuff to deny you the unlock, complain on their Twitter page, the Twitter team has the unlock tool with them

That does not align to their published T&C's in change of mind policy per below:

If you're an O2 Refresh customer, you've the right to cancel your whole O2 Refresh deal (both your Airtime Plan and Device Plan Credit Agreement) within those 14 days. Or you can change your device for another one, but you can only do this once. If you've signed up to O2 Refresh by buying out your old contract early and then change your mind, you can't go back to your old tariff once your new service has started and you can't get a refund on your old contract buy-out fee.

I would highly advise everyone to not get a 16gb. You will only have around 10gb usable. I made the same mistake. Contract should be over around November. Can't wait to get a phone with more memory

But this is still great for those who don't need much memory and also you can buy 50gb cloud storage for less than £1 per month.

No, £5pm is for the handset. Refresh contracts are seperate; £30pm for the Airtime and £5pm for the Phone. Cancel the Airtime (as above) and pay off the phone to get the deal.
twinkle
22 Jul 16 #1
You probably need to just explain the refresh system before you're frozen
MrGamer123 to twinkle
22 Jul 16 56 #4
