I know slightly lower price point - but what would be a good men's commute city bike (10-15 miles a day in London) in the halfords stable for 150-200 price range?

Crossfire 2 spec is still below the Marasa. it has 21 speed Tourney/Altus mix so only has a 7 speed cassette, the Marasa is 27 speed all Altus and will accept a large selection of 9 speed cassettes and allow the bike to be fine tuned to whatever use it will be put to if required ( a very useful 11-32 comes fitted). The Marasa has better Hydraulic discs against the Crossfire 2 mechanical. The Marasa has rigid forks with fittings for mudguards and pannier lowriders, while the Crossfire has a heavier cheapo suspension fork which is unlikely to ever be needed anyway. Marasa also looks better but that is subjective

The VooDoo Marasa is in a different league to the Crossfire 1, hydraulic brakes and a good step up in quality and number of Shimano gears. For a hybrid bike many, me included, prefer a rigid front fork, which the Marassa has. A closer match is the Crossfire 2, but I would still opt for the VooDoo Marasa if you can get one in the correct frame size for you.

Which is a better bike guys?
Carrera Crossfire 1 Mens Hybrid Bike 2015 OR the VooDoo Marasa Hybrid Bike
I've got a budget of around £250-£300 but not sure what to go for. I will primarily using it for around 30 - 40 minutes a day to get to work and back. Mainly using roads with speed bumps, paths and quite a few large curbs to overcome, occasionally taking it to my local park too. Should I just go for a mountain bike instead? And if so, which one would you pick from the availability at halfords in my price range?

Any bike techies here??
I have bought a voodoo marasa after reading good things about it. I got it second hand but it was virtually brand new. I had to remove the front wheel to get it in the car. When putting it back on i struggled like hell to put it back on and realised I needed to prise the pads open on the disc brakes. Now when I use the front brake the disc pulls one way distorting the wheel. What have I done wrong?
Also the rear brake squeals really loud when I pull the lever hard.

Good day, sorry for not getting back to you sooner
I'm going with the Vanquish as I wanted the 8 speed claris. The tourney has a thumb clicker to switch down gear, whereas claris has it within the lever mechanism.Preference really, but probably a bit better quality too (never owned a new road bike before, so only have the old downtube shifters to compare to). Also a little lighter, but I know this doesn't make a difference with my 15 stone, 5'11'' frame :P

I've been and tried the Marasa and they had to adjust the seat to its maximum height for me at which point the handlebars just felt too low.
The woman at Halfords said the Crossfire 1 is their biggest selling bike but I didnt like the white colour.
I tried the 21" Crossfire 2 which was a perfect size but I was put off by it having front suspension.

Have you tried the Marasa 20" yourself? If not give it a go, it's an interesting frame design and I don't think you will have any problem with seat height, it's a long seat post and depending on your upper height and arm length you will probably find just rotating the bars will give you adequate reach without having to fit a new stem.

Hello - so I was looking at the Carrera Saruna with the below :-
Bike price at the store £144 http://www.ridethenight.co.uk/PDFs/November%202015.pdf (10% instore discount) -14.40
Vouchers value to buy £130
Quidco Reserve and collect cashback 3% = -£4
Zeek Vouchers: £130 (@10% discount) roughly £117 total to pay
Is that the right calculation or am I missing an additional discount/voucher/code etc?
I know it's slightly more than you want to pay, but for the price you're getting a lot of bike for £479 . Also you could try some of these little things mentioned in another post.
Bike price at the store £600
British Cycling membership benefit (10% instore discount) -£60
Vouchers value to buy £540
Discount when buying vouchers (10% of the basket) -£54
Quidco Reserve and collect cashback 3% = -£18
BC membership £15
Total money spent = £483 http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/22-off-any-purchase-halfords-1603626#comments
Thanks, I had considered the Kraken but read reviews on the brakes and forks not being so good for the money and the problems with Halfords sometimes building the bikes wrong, would you say it's well worth the punt at £320 though as opposed to its normal price ? Or would I be better waiting for a two two as I'm not really in a rush to get a bike ?
edit: The Vengeance seems a better spec than Kraken and way cheaper, would you say Vengeance at current price is best bang for money under £400 ?

There are other advantages to have a rigid fork over a cheap suss fork..... They dont go wrong like a suss can, you dont get that horrible thunk when you bunny hop up a curb due to a suss topping out and a rigid fork is a lot lighter. Lighter is always good on bikes, especially when you have to carry a bike up steps over a footbridge.

Anyone know if this is instore or only available online/click and collect?
I have a Crossfire.... and while its been a good bike and pretty bomb proof as well, i would take the Marasa over it any day. For a hybrid, i'd rather have a decent chromoly rigid fork than the cheap pogo stick suss fork on the Crossfire. Not to mention the gears and brakes being far better on the Marasa.
I think front suss is really only needed on proper mountain bikes..... and anyway, there is a certain amount of flex in a chromoly rigid fork and combined with the fatter tyres you get on a hybrid it will still be a smoothish ride.

Would anyone mind giving me some very basic advice on buying a hybrid bike? I'm completely clueless in this field but i'm interested in the VooDoo Marasa simply because some here have said it's a steal, and the Carrera Crossfire 2 looks very good to me also simply because it's got front suspension which i've ridden before and appreciated.

I was looking at the Vanquish as well but now thinking about the Carerra TDF Limited edition at £199.20. It also has the carbon forks and although the specs on the website says a 7005 alloy frame, having seen it in the flesh (and looking at the pics) it is actually 6061. The difference is in the gearset - Shimano Claris on the Vanquish vs. Shimano Tourney on the TDF.... is it worth paying an additional £64 for what is for all intentions and purposes an entry level bike?
I am hoping to see Zeek vouchers to reserve and collect in store the Carrera Saruna for my DD.

For once Halfords seem to be giving a genuine extra 20% off.
I've been looking for a mountain bike for my wife.
Some of the bikes have never been cheaper. I chose the Carrera Vengeance 2015 model as it has a better spec than the new 2016 version.
At £200 it's even cheaper than the £215 I paid back at the beginning of May for my daughter, who has been very happy with it.
The main differences from the Vengeance are that it has the lower spec Shimano Tourney gears and V Brakes. Personally I recommend spending the extra £40 for the disc brakes and Shimano Altus gears, but both bikes are perfectly good entry level bikes. You would have to spend significantly more money than the Vengeance to get a better spec.
Unfortunately, the Men's versions of both bikes are £40 dearer.
British Cycling Club 10% discount already mentioned, plus many people have access to work discount voucher schemes. Our one currently gives 10% off Halfords gift card purchases.

I'm guessing they're anticipating a medium term boost in cycling with the weather and Froome's inevitable victory in this years TDF
Mostly city and a little bit of off road usage I suppose.
Anyone with prior experience of this?
Halfords prices and offers change every few days, so I would recommend anyone thinking about it to just get on and reserve t he bike at this price.
Worth asking amongst your friends though, it's quite common amongst NHS, Emergency services, local government and education employers.
I bought the Crossfire 1 and fitted an Ekit to it about 3 yrs ago, cost about £600 in total.... but if this Crossfire E had been out at the time for £800, i would have bought that instead.

Agreed though that if you have £240 the Voodoo Marassa is a steal.
And yes the 20% is already applied
Hydraulic brakes and although the battery is stated as 9amp/hr, its actually 11.6amp/hr.

Is the 20% discount already included in this price?
I've been looking for a mountain bike for my wife.
Some of the bikes have never been cheaper. I chose the Carrera Vengeance 2015 model as it has a better spec than the new 2016 version.
At £200 it's even cheaper than the £215 I paid back at the beginning of May for my daughter, who has been very happy with it.

Also a perfectly respectable entry level women's mountain bike is the Carrera Valour at £159.20

And you know what, It's happened today.
Can't get better than that. :stuck_out_tongue:
Also, cheapest I have seen for the Carrera Vanquish at £263.99, I am in the process of buying it at £269.99.
If I hadn't already, I would be getting them at this price. A steal for the Bizango
