Yes, all BBQ's require a gas regulator to attach to gas cylinder.
It normally comes with the BBQ.

does a gas BBQ need this ?

If you want to save your money, please take a look at the previous "deal" for this company.
You will notice I mention that a company called WOLDLINK will supply all types of gas cheaper than these people...it's a fact.
Save your money and thank me later. :smirk:

Ordered from them few weeks ago. estimated delivery date 7 days but turned up nxt day. They didnt call me to say they were on their way as agreed so i cud swop empty. They left bottle outside the front of the house, and left without an empty.
Called them to pick up empty.. Again no call but luckily someone was home this time and took empty away wk later.
Overall conclusion.. Cheaper than travis perkins by a few pennies and delivered for free so saved me a trip to the store at least. Bit of a hassle as a first time user. Shopped via topcashback and ebay. So few pennies cb and few nectar points too
Will prob use again!

I got one cylinder one this deal earlier in the year, swapped the regulator and all is good. Butane is supposed to burn a little cooler than propane, but if it does I have not noiticed anything negative for the BBQ. Since then I have acquired another 4 of these through a friend who bought them for BBQ and patio heaters and then realised he didn't want to swap regulators and so on. I now have enough butane for a few years of BBQs if only the weather would work out.

Calor is 3 or 4 times this price if you don't have an empty and have to pay a cylinder deposit (which reduces over time so you never ever get your full deposit back)
This thread is aimed purely at those who are unaware that gas can be supplied without the need to pay a hefty deposit.
Other than that Gumtree is a good place to pick up a cheap empty Calor cylinder if your preference is Calor.

That's a bit misleading. As I mentioned, Calor will exchange any size/type gas bottle for any other one and it's not that hard to get your hands on one. I took back a 10 year old 7kg Butane tank that had been sitting behind the shed doing nothing and in return they gave me a full 13kg patio gas for about 30 quid. A 15kg Butane was a couple of quid more. Sure it's still more expensive but nowhere near 3 or 4 times the price,

Sorry mate, I have to disagree once more.
If you don't know about Woldlink, then I guess this is a good deal comparatively speaking.
Once you've been made aware of Woldlinks prices, it blows this lot out of the water.

Correct propane will burn better in colder weather, butane won't turn to gas if its too cold but we're talking near freezing.

I used these people once and wasn't impressed.
They delivered my gas to the wrong street, took 4 weeks to sort it out!
First they claimed that it was delivered outside my house, and wouldn't budge on that stance. Luckily i have CCTV and easily proved this wrong, they eventually owned up and said that it was returned the day after they delivered it but they couldn't tie it up with any order.
Once they agreed it was their mistake they rescheduled delivery for the following week (why do i need to wait a week because of their mistake??)
That didn't arrive and the excuse was that the van broke down, so i had to wait again.
Terrible experience, but if nothing goes wrong you get cheap gas.
A deal isn't just about price though, it's the whole package. voted cold

I had a similar experience. They tried to deliver to the wrong house number several times. It was an on line order and i entered my house number correctly. I got the gas in the end. I've found out since i can get cheaper locally, but they are OK.

Compared with the DIY stores, petrol forecourts, garden centres etc IMO it is a good find.

Blood hell I pay 13 euros for a refill of a 12kg bottle in Spain. I never realised gas is so pricey in the UK.
if you need the regulator alongside this 13kg bottle of Butane then have a look on eBay as Gas deal are also doing an offer that you can get the gas and regulator for less than £30 which saves another couple of pounds

Monkeybumcheeks post re WoldLink - excellent advice!!!
Ordered 13kg butane from them with a 21mm valve (choice is available) on a Thursday afternoon, delivered 3 working days later on the following Tuesday.
There is no online ordering - you will have to phone and speak to a real person (Diane or Robert usually), they'll take card payment over the phone (free for debit card, 2% charge for credit card) and are lovely!
Gas is actually delivered by FloGas, with Flogas delivery note!
Oh, price, nearly forgot!
£18.85 + 5% VAT = £19.79 No deposit required, no exchange bottle required and free delivery to boot!
Can't beat that

They were £18.85 for butane, as previous, lack of online ordering is losing them sales.
They were the cheapest in the country BUT I'm guessing HUKD won't allow them because they don't have any advertising whatsoever of there pricing and price may vary depending on location...?

If you look at the previous thread, you'll notice that the OP (the same one on this thread) calls them to check and he agrees with me.
HUKD don't deem WOLDLINK to be a suitable merchant due to the fact that they won't get a kick back :smirk:

I think (but someone please correct me if I'm wrong) there is now different regulators for butane, propane and 'patio gas' which appears to be propane under a different name. All regulators are well under a tenner and simple to fit with a jubilee clip. The propane and patio gas regulators are both red but fit differently.
KendallC
31 Jul 16#24
To be honest, I've not been properly gas BBQing long enough to make a fair comparison. I used Butane for a couple of seasons on a cheapo DIY store BBQ about 10 years ago, hated gas BBQing so went back to Charcoal. This year I had a porch built on the back of the house and bought a Weber Q gas for everyday BBQing while keeping my charcoal kettle for 'proper' BBQ's. While researching gas for the Q, most people suggested propane, one reason being it works better in cold weather and as the porch/Weber Q set up was put together with all year round cooking in mind I felt it was the better option.

They are easy to swap, you may find you have a jubilee clip or it could be crimped. Replace it with a jubilee clip if you find its a crimped one as they are 'one use only' apart from that you need to give it a really good tug to pull it out of the tube. Make sure your check for leaks with some soapy water after.

Any idea if they let you swap for a different cylinder on future purchases? I prefer propane so if I could swap bottles at no cost when it runs out I may order one.

I swapped out an 11kg leisure propane for a 13kg butane, no questions asked. He was just about to say about the regulator difference when I stepped and said I had both. That was last week. they let me swap a different bottle the year before as well
Thanks, it was a red and said propane on the connector, guessing be cheaper buy this and replace the regulator as Propane more expensive??

gazdoubleu to UltimatePhoenix
31 Jul 16#13
can use either for a BBQ but you would have to swap regulators if you want butane as most come with a propane regulator
andynicol to UltimatePhoenix
31 Jul 16#16
You need to determine which regulator you have, 'mostly' but not all of the time the colour is a good indication, blue = butane, red = propane, BUT this is not always the case.
The regulator should tell you on it which cylinder it is suitable for, or do you have an existing cylinder..?
It will more than likely be either a 21mm clip butane regulator as in pic in post 1, or a 27mm clip on propane regulator.

They have a cage full of them at my local dump...I'm not convinced those that are leaving them there are all removing valves beforehand!
andynicol
31 Jul 16#8
Best bet is Gumtree for a used cylinder, scrapyards (if thats what you mean by 'dump'?) cannot take gas cylinders unless the valve is removed, thus deeming them useless.

31 Jul 16#7
Shame, they just lost a sale and repeat customer...until I find the right cylinder at the dump that is!

They won't swap cylinder types, I've asked them previously, propane incurs a deposit charge, no exceptions they said.
Calor will allow you to swap cylinder types but ultimately costs the end user through deposit charges.

I realise that but Calor dealers let you swap any bottle for any other one (size or gas type irrelevant) when you buy a refill. I was wondering if they offer the same deal so once it runs out I can swap for propane. Nothing on the website in FAQ's so I've emailed them.
