If you need it to be small and have a 4k / UHD TV this one might be worth getting, otherwise just for gaming, get a 1tb regular Xbone.

I'm not sure you've read that quite right. XBone S supports HDR10, whilst the LG OLED 2016 series supports both Dolby Vision and HDR10. I think what is causing confusion is the fact the LG's are the only UK-available TVs to support DV so far (I think), but that is not at the cost of dropping HDR10, they can do both.

HDR10 is the standard adopted by UHD certification, not DV (which arguably looks even better). In short, XB1S UHD movies will look great in HDR10 on LG OLEDs (and other compatible TVs). This handily explains the difference and LG OLED stance:

http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/tvs-entertainment/1404660/dolby-vision-vs-hdr-10-whats-the-difference

Well, that's how i read it anyway... :man:

Surely ... If you have an Xbox One ... you would swap it for the new Xbox One S if Microsoft offered the option for free?
There is no argument against that scenario that I can think of other than its' colour?
And if you are buying your first Xbox One, then surely the 'S' would be what you buy if both were the same price?
Again, there is no argument against that scenario that I can think of, other than colour?
No one is claiming the existing one is better looking or that they like the 'huge' external power pack ... are they?
So the only real debate is financial ... Is the new console worth the extra money if buying new or should you sell your existing console to contribute toward buying the new one? Or will you just buy the new one as-well? - I envy those who can do so without thinking that's too extravagant.
I've changed my mind about selling to upgrade - I can't be bothered to sell partly because 2nd prices are IMO low and I don't want to make up the difference) HOWEVER I understand those who are .. The 'S' is very pretty and I do want one, if only to have the latest variation, but I am simply not willing to be drawn into 'upgrading' as the PS4 is my favoured console and the Xbox One (used only now for 'exclusives' - of which I am yet to find one I particularly enjoy) sits there devaluing with every letter I type.

Personally not bothered about a 4K Blu-ray player.
4K TV (in my opinion) isn't all it's cracked up to be. A lot of studios can't even get Blu-ray conversion right, let alone upping old films to 4K.
Prime example - the Ghostbusters double pack released in 2014.
First film looks HORRIBLE on Blu-ray and that's supposedly a remaster. Meanwhile GB2 looks amazing.

Overall, not bothered about the Xbox One S.
Only got my Xbox One last Christmas and it's build is far better than the original 360, which only saw a Slim release because of the noise and other hardware issues.
My 10 yr old son is after one for Xmas this year, and in a straight run between paying £185 for a standard One with a choice of game and £250 for a Slim with no game, it's an easy choice, especially when his Live Gold account already has 20 Xbox One games ready and waiting for him.

I wouldn't know about the Ghz connections as the whole house is cable connected so there's no drop in connection speeds here. Real gamers use wired connection. And who buys next gen to play previous gen low res games? I'm just messing with you anyway. A friendly banter. Lol. The kids play the ps4 and the xbox one. Pc gaming is the best.. especially on a 34 inch 21:9 aspect monitor, SSD and a GTX 980.

In my opinion mobile gaming is best. I say mobile gaming, because my phone can run a decent FPS at 2560*1440p resolution and many other games at the full resolution at 60FPS. iPad, too. Mobile gaming is clearly the most energy efficient way to game. So if you are concerned about energy foot print like me then pick an iPad.

Yet you have a PlayStation Logo. lol. I only have an Xbox One because I was given it as a gift. The last xbox I really enjoyed over a PlayStation was the original one. But for me PS3 and the PS4 won the following battles. Crasy how they're better. smaller and manage to have the PSU built in. The xbox 360 even with it's external PSU still managed to overheat.

Catbeans - you're right. I was way out there on my historic figs. Apologies.

RE: cost of consoles i still think at least on the base console they're breaking even at best, hence why the pricier ones have a bigger price difference for what should be cheapish components. Its like Dell with their cheap laptops - its on the upgrades that they make their money.

I was using hyperbole but i don't know where you are getting £500 ten years ago from? I have a Samsung Spin point F1 1TB I still use for data ( a pretty good drive at the time) and i have had it ~8+ years and I payed well under £100. As someone that has games on both PC and console for two decades I remember getting a xb360 and wtf'ing at the small size of the hardrive conpared to my PC even then.

As for the console markup, there is only a price difference of about £10 to £15 between 500gb and 1tb drives of the standard put into consoles, now go look up the prices of 500gb and 1tb consoles and tell me there isn't a hike.

I'm actually buying this from this site . Don't have an xboxone one atm and the best part of it is that is has 4k player built in . Much better value than current older version of the console . But to call this a "DEAL" when its at recommend retail price is crazy.

pgilc1
26 Jun 16 1 #75
10 years ago a 1TB drive would have cost you between £500 and £1,000.

There is no "markup" on consoles - they are sold at very close to cost because of the massive profit made from the games.

Scorpio question, will all the shiny extras and 4k games affect the amount of HDD space required? especially DLC. This will influence my decision to buy in the 4k gen or not.
pgilc1 to andrewsolly
26 Jun 16 1 #71
Yes. They'll most likely be bigger.

Extra processing power and better graphics allows for even more complex games, which means bigger games
catbeans to andrewsolly
26 Jun 16 1 #73
Simply put, yes, though it is not clear how game developers will deal with installs yet, I.E will the texture packs be higher definition for the Scorpio or will it just be better frame rate and resolution with the same texture quality as the regular Xbox?. If the textures are better, the install will be much bigger.

Also, will the install files be the same for both the Xbone and Scorpio? In which case Xbox One installs will get better, once these two questions are known, the answer to your question will be more clear.

However I would expect the Scorpio hardrive to be much larger and I think it's pretty discusting considering 1TB drives became affordable about 10 years ago, the stupid size of the markup both Sony and Xbox put on consoles with frankly minor increases in drive size.

26 Jun 16 3 #70
4K Blu Ray is the way forward.

Microsoft wont drop the Xbox One S when Scorpio arrives, just like they didnt drop the 360 after the Xbox One arrived. Heck, only stopped making 360s this year!!

So 18 months before Scorpio gets here, and say another 2.5 years after that, minimum, the Xbox One will be around until we're into 2020.
Madman123

vulcanproject
26 Jun 16 1 #67
4K bluray is a DOA format. The HDR support is patchy, it's too early for a widely accepted standard. The extra HDD space can easily be sorted on a old machine with a cheap 2TB portable drive.

Basically, it's an ok upgrade but I would hardly go out of my way for it or pay the extra for it, considering Microsoft are extremely likely to drop the machine like a hot potato once Scorpio arrives anyway....

Assume no. M$ want you to use external USB.
If it has a hybrid drive like the Elite, games will load quicker. My friends Star Wars Battlefront loads slightly faster than it does from my external USB.

The only thing you have just proved, especially with the IGN link provided, is that the PlayStation 4 has far, far more games in 1080p than the Xbox One.

vulcanproject
26 Jun 16 1 #35
Unlike the previous consoles (PS3, Xbox 360), there was never anything fundamentally poor about Xbox One's original hardware. It wasn't loud under full chat, it didn't generate tonnes of heat or guzzle lots of power. It was made to be left on for ages and had great reliability. It was just big. So although this was inevitable I can't see why you wouldn't just pick up the older machines for much less
