I use it to transfer films and TV series that I download using the hotel wifi when we're away on holiday. So we have something decent to watch in the evenings. Provided the hotel TV has a usb slot and provided I'm not 10 sheets to the wind.
On previous trips I used an OTG lead that I picked up for a few quid.

I have one of these and although the read speed is good the write speed leaves a lot to be desired and doesn't even reach the speed of USB 2 not to mention USB 3. Poor in my opinion and although handy it maybe, fast it is not.

the blue port on new laptop's and PC's will get you usb 3 speeds also in NTFS mode not FAT

As others have noted these are a bit prone to the sliding mechanism breaking. I managed to get my data off but picked up a PNY 16GB OTG Duo-Link OU3 USB3.0 for a fiver or something at PC world and it is now living on my keyring, Time will tell but I think I favour it for a) no moving parts b) although plastic it seems like it might be a bit "bouncy" and resilient if it got crushed against keys in your pocket for example.
Still looking for a really bomb proof USB OTG convertible stick though. Size not too important to me 16GB is plenty. I only need it to be always with me and to work when I need it to transfer an email attachment or dropbox download from my phone to a handheld computer.
