I went to Malaysia at the start of the year and enjoyed it immensely. However, I feel that 2/3 days in KL is all that your really need. It's a big city that has undergone massive redevelopment and as a result has lots of shiny skyscrapers and shopping malls which make it feel a bit sterile. For me the city was short on attractions although that's not to say there aren't things to do. The old Colonial areas are interesting such as Merdeka Sqaure and Chinatown is worth a visit as well as the bird park. The hotels seem to be mainly large soulless chains but the Majestic Hotel stands out from the crowd as it has some character. As others have mentioned the climate is hot and humid which makes walking around for any long periods uncomfortable. My advice would be to visit here for a few days and then move on to somewhere else by car or plane. Internal flights are very cheap! Malacca and the Cameron Highlands are a few hours away by car and Penang and Langkawi are short flights away. All are highly recommended!

These are still available on the Malaysia Airlines website for June dates. Absolute bargain. I have a place in KL and use it as a stopover for Thailand, Singapore, Cambodia, Vietnam, Australia, etc. You can use Air Asia to get to these destinations. Pattaya cost us arounf £55 return and Chiang Mai £45. Australia was £150 return. All from KLIA2 the new Airport in Kuala Lumpur. The train to Singapore from KL is less than £20 return.
In Kuala itself hotels are cheap (The Royal Chulan, pricier but great)). Visit Penang in the North for a beach break (Rasa Sayang hotel is fantastic, lots of cheaper options tho) or take a trip to Langkawi on the west coast. The east coast is picturesque but is more traditional Maylay and less touristy. People are friendly and food is mega cheap. It is quite a conservative country compared to Thailand for example so you need to be mindful of this.Grab it while you can if its not sold out already.

From KL you can fly budget to Singapore, Bali, Thailand, etc. Just look up Air Asia to start with. Love Malaysia Airline. Would be all over this but already going in August.
