Would like to know how these compare to a deep fat fryer. I know they are healthier but can they cook proper chips etc.

Are they good for only chips or things like fish fingers and other asian foods

​my chips don't stick together at all, yes great for fish fingers, chicken nuggets, onion rings, waffles are great too, chicken wings, breasts, or legs, the list goes on and on, for me everything taste better ie less fat in it. you'd be surprised how much fat drops of nuggets and fish fingers.

Do you feel it uses alot of electricity then?

Works well but an absolute pain to keep clean!

It heats up quicker than our full-sized oven so I don't think it uses too much electricity. I use our airfryer for roasting veg and warming up bread (as well as chips etc). It's great.

Love my airfryer and this is a good price for one.

I love mine and can now still have chips. I add different seasonings for a change. Cubed potatoes with curry powder and basil are lovely as are rosemary potato slices. Also cooks chicken portions lovely, crispy skin but moist on the inside.
Easy to clean and so much more healthier.

I've bought one two weeks ago and its great . The only issue I have seen after using it for the last two weeks is that a sticky residue was Appearing on the sides of the basket.

I have discovered that its mostly due to the 1 Cal spray I was using ;-(. Its better to use normal cooking oil (brush on food if needed) rather than spraying the 1 cal spray .

This is best for reheating takeaway chips/friend chicken from the night before. It doesn't work well with frozen food.

I know someone who swears by theirs, she uses it for pindia , whack in for 10mins and she says they are crisp and dry ready to use in masala, also chicken tikka and chops are cooked nice in it, fresh fish is amazing , my experience with samosas is the Punjabi roti style are perfect in airfryers brushed lightly with oil but spring rolls etc no where near as good as fried, they dont get the golden brown colour but are crunchy and healthy. I even use mine for small portions of pizza for the kids, its very versatile

I got one a couple of months ago - when removing the basket from the machine drip tray separated and hit the floor making it go slightly wonky and not close properly. I spoke to Tesco who put me on to Philips who have arranged a replacement (it was a painful 30+mins in phone calls - sounds like they might be based in Spain?)

All in all, it's a good little device - great for single people, OK for couples, useless if you're cooking for 3 or more people (you'll be loading and unloading the basket for well over an hour)

Bought my wife one 6 months ago from JL when they were going for £49 (search back on older threads here) fantastic machine in addition to what's been said you can cook fish fingers bake potatoes you can even make cakes and crumbles in it. However cannot give this hot as previously mentioned, has been £20 cheaper!

So far I have used it to cook frozen chips, beer battered fish (for fish and chips). Sausage rolls .

Its great for pre cooked frozen snacks as it cooks very quicky . Frozen oven chips are ready in 7/8 min rather than 15-20 min in the oven ( and u have to add on the extra time it takes for the oven to reach the desired temp)

Pastry and batter covered frozen snacks are much nicer on the airfryer as its cooked from all sides (In the oven its usually on a flat tray)

Sausage rolls come out spot on!!!


A tip with the frozen foods on the airfryer:
if you are getting perfectly cooked outside crust and the inside is still cold this is what you have to do.

Tale out the frozen stuff from the freezer and microwave for around 1 min on a plate and then put it in the airfryer . The crust/pastry will be a bit soggy when you take it from the microwave but dont worry !!

The airfryer cooks from outside to inside while a microwave cooks from the centre out.

This method is useful if you are getting frozen/cold centres on the airfryer.

Dont use anything with filo pastry on the airfryer . They come out hard and flavourless even with liberal use of oil. (Same as an oven). Use stuff with battetlr on or puff pastry on them .

You can also use the micro cook version of samosa's in the airfryer and they come out very nice. However with frozen samosas its best to microwave it for a minute before using it in the airfryer to avoid a frozen centre .

Difficult to clean?? Basket in dishwasher (doesn't get much easier than that!), main body only needs cleaning after a few uses, when it's still hot drain any fat into an empty coffee jar (or similar). I tend to just fill it up with hot soapy water then rinse out... remember your food is being cooked IN the basket, the base is only for recirculating the hot air.
By far my most used kitchen gadget, I have two for cooking when more food needs cooking, but as someone else said, 1 airfryer is great for a single person, frozen sausages and frozen fries cook in around 8 minutes, these are fantastic for quick meals.
It's basically a small fan oven so anything you can cook in the over, you can cook in the air fryer, just get one, you won't be disappointed :smiley:

Bought one of these last week from B&M for £59.99 and is great, have used for frozen chips, fishfingers and cubed potatoes and cook perfectly and enough in basket to feed 5 of us, great product.

Par boil the chips first, just so they start going bendy. Let them steam dry, spray with oil and then put them in this. They come out much, MUCH better. Almost like real chips.

Fish fingers are Asian now?

I bought the hd9230 having previously had two Tefal air fryers one last 3 years with a few parts replaced and another cheap version which lasted less than a year but was bought 2 years ago which was pants. The Philips I find it better makes better tasting chips too

I have tried raw chicken and fish pieces and it comes out nicely., although cleaning the thingy does take a bit effort. I havent tried dish washer though.

Does anyone know how these compare to the Tefal air fryer? Does it use a little arm to push the food around like the Tefal does? Not really a fan of the arm as it tends to rip food to pieces :disappointed:

No smarty pants i asked about normal frozen food and asian food ( asian food as in chicken tilkka , marinated fish ,kebabs , samosa , sheesh kebabs ) thats why i said AND OTHER

The 'other' implies fish fingers are an Asian food. Basic English there.

Both have their pros and cons. The actifry (duh, sorry) easier to clean (if you don't have a dish washer, like me) and like you said, pushes the food around. The Philips variation you have to remember to shake the basket now and again, but now? I actually prefer it and it really matters on the quality of the potatoes you use. Roosters make grand chips in the thing and if you par boil, like I said earlier? They're as good as you're going to get with minimal oil.

No it doesnt turn food just give it a quick shake half way through. I prefer the philips on as it doesn't mash food up like onion rings. As i said before I have had two Tefals one family version which was great but would mash up some foods and another cheap version made by tefal for around £130 which was crap no auto turn off. The Philips for us is much better and seem to crisps the food better.

Just sprinkle with curry powder, sorted. :laughing:

​no I'd say less than a normal chip pan from what I've read.

​if you don't need it don't buy it, simples.. I use mine almost everyday for 6 months.

​never tried sausage roll in it must give it a try.
