Such an ill thought out comment.

It takes a very discerning eye to spot the difference between 2K and 1080P. But the additional processor/GPU load not only reduces the effective performance of your phone, it also hammers battery life.

If you are happy to waste processing and battery power for no gain, then that is your prerogative. But I for one am glad that at least one company is back pedalling.

The screen resolution race reminds of the megapixel race years back in the smartphone world. The extra MP's were not needed then - and the extra screen resolution is not needed now.

Stop being a spec hound.

Just had a look at it in the loop earlier and had a chance to purchase but declined. There's 2 main reasons

1: the phone was believed to have a micro sd card slot available but there isn't one.
2: the phone was believed to have a 3,700+ battery but it's a measly 3,000mah.

So I'm sticking with my Note 4 for now.

yeah for its specs its good BUT samsung can afford to charge over the odds for their devices wheres op are known for highend specs at low prices.
And considering they are still relatively unknown not sure people are gonna bite at that price

Agreed - pricier than expected. Can't ever compare this to Samsung. Saumsung actually have a physical UK presence - and a warranty that means something as opposed to a warranty that they completely ignored in my case.

i dont support sumsungs prices etc but I agree with the above in that people aren't going to be willing to pay over 300 for a brand they've never heard of and a device they don't even have the opportunity to see instore if they wish. Also lack of customer support.

The capacity of the battery has actually decreased from the previous OnePlus models (3300 to 3000 mmah) - bit of an oddity? It does have fast charging - but not helpful if you are not near a charge point and just want a longer battery life.

Doesn't 1080p makes the battery last a lot longer as apposed to a 2k screen which isn't really necessary is it?

You're right 1080p sounds sensible. 6gb sounds like marketing bs. I'd have preferred 4gb and a sd card slot and bigger battery.

Since when did 2K become essential? (Genuinely interested).

I had a 2K (or was it 4K?) screen Lumia 950 --- and all I really noticed was the battery drain. It certainly wasn't a big step up from 1080p screen phones.

I think above 1080p phones are purely for the spec hounds. I'd sooner have snappier performance and better battery

I'm bummed out at the screen on time being reported at 4hrs and reviewers saying that it gets them to the evening so unlikely to see you through 24hours with regular use. I like the 6BG ram but would rather have had sd on board also.

basically I have decided I love the one plus x but it would need NFC to be a good all-rounder

really hope this year's one plus x doesn't have a snapdragon 810 though that's the fear

Haha, what a silly comment.

Fact: You won't be able to tell the difference between FHD and 2k on a 5.5" screen.

Looks good to me - even though I'm a Samsung person. What great here is that you can order the accessories from the get go - Samsung takes weeks after the phones are available to make the cases available and they are always stupidly expensive - hence I always end up getting one from Amazon to protect the phone when received. As their success grows they are always going to try and raise the unit price - that's market forces for you !

Since when he bought a microscope.

People with good vision would need to hold the phone within 7 inches of their eyes to be able to detect a difference between 1080 and QHD. People with exceptional visual acuity a bit further but that is only to detect not actually derive any real benefit from.

Tempting. I was hoping it'd be £249 for a lower spec 32GB Storage/4GB RAM option then maybe 64GB/4GB for £279 and 64GB/6GB for £299 or something.

Still a very good price at the end of the day for what you get but it just doesn't seem any "different". Not sure if I should order or wait a few weeks/months for it to drop. Not like I can't afford it though and even if the price did drop it wouldn't be drop more than £30 and considering I use my phone more than my laptop or tablet I should probably pay for it. Argh! Just because something has become 'standard', doesn't mean it is of any real benefit.

If most people struggle to discern a difference between 1080p and 2K, then why put the extra battery/processing demands on the phone?! All a 2K screen does is nullify the benefits of stronger components.

(My old Lumia 930 with a 1080p screen was far prettier to look at than the 2K screen on my 950. The performance was very similar too. Which means that all those improved components in the 950 ultimately counted for nought).

I've gone from a 2K Lumia 950 to a 5" 720p £56 Ulefone Paris . Quite honestly, for 95% of the time I am using the phone, the screen resolution has no bearing whatsoever...and I certainly don't look at it and think 'jees, I wish I had 2K'!

I think 1080p is the sweet spot for 5" and above. 720p is fine for 4.5" and below. and the bit in between is all down to user preference. Maybe 2K will be of more relevance once these phones start being used for virtual reality and what not (though even then, I reckon that'll be such a niche as to make it largely irrelevant for the majority of people)

I'm not sure the Samsung warranty is worth that much either, I had an S4 supplied with one of their dodgy batteries which bulged causing an issue with the phone, they wouldn't replace the battery without me sending the phone away for up to 30 days for them to check over, with no offer of a replacement. As the phone was less than 3 months old I tried a new genuine battery and there seemed no issues. Samsung refused to even pay for the replacement battery.

Don't really understand the cold voting on this, (although HUKD often tends to have 'sheep type' voting)

I guess people expect a cheaper phone from Oneplus.

But reviews are comparing it with the top flagship devices, and it seems to be almost as good as them in most areas.
I personally think it offers good value for money, but we will see how it fares once some everyday users get to grips with it...

Also worth noting that the source code has been released already for the phone
https://forums.oneplus.net/threads/developers-modders-and-enthusiasts-its-about-time.450143/
so i guess that custom roms will be available sooner than with the OP2, good if oneplus drag their heels with updates again.

15 Jun 16 4 #93
Apart from just expecting the OP3 to be cheaper, almost every phone posted on here has the specs in the title - if people were to see 820 CPU, 6+64Gb, NFC & metal body in the title (take note op), perhaps they may vote differently.

I can't find a single current UK-available phone with anywhere near the specs for the price, except the 4+64Gb Moto G4 Plus perhaps, but the latter has 2Gb less Ram, an inferior CPU, a polycarbonate body & no NFC, yet has been voted hot! And isn't exactly on offer either. Only on HUKD.

Add in buggy os, next to no customer support, lacks SD slot

Yeah nothing else has 6gb here but the bonus 2gb seems to be superfluous currently, if the 3 had come before the moto g4+ maybe that would've got less heat, but it's hardly gone supernova. It's clearly more powerful but battery life will likely suffer for it, (very minor point but 3's fast charge is twice as slow too) The SD capability will be key to some. Metal body often leads to worse signal quality. Yeah nfc was big miss on g4+ lacking SD slot is big miss on the 3. Suspect Motorola will have cleaner os. Another minor one is better speakers on the g4+. The water repellent coating is an advantage. Some will like the customisation options with g4/g4+ too over the one size fits all 3.

The 3 is the stronger but lacks in key areas, would've been nice if they skipped the lets make it thinner obsession and added couple of mm for better battery too. Moto G does lack more, c20% cheaper though too.

And the moto g4+ did have £10 off so was kind of an offer, more so for those with unidays too I think. Oh and the tcb that someone mentioned there

Like any of them have had it long enough yet. Can't recall many reviews saying this is a buggy piece of crap for any of the phones that were before, and oneplus have definitely been guilty in the past. And one person's heavy usage is another's light day.

There's a rumour that a lower spec 4Gb/32GB model may still be made available to certain markets?..

I cant help thinking Oneplus may have pulled a fast one here, i.e. offloading the surplus OnePlus 2 stocks @ £249 (including selling them through Amazon) and only then introducing a lower specced Oneplus 3 at the same price?
Pondlife

2k is on a smartphone is overrated. I still don't see a difference between my OnePlus One and HTC 10 in terms of resolution. On top of that, 2k impacts battery life and performance. 2k resolution on a screen that small is a gimmick, IMO, and completely unnecessary.

A FLAC music collection + a few 4K videos, plus a weeks worth of iPlayer downloads could soon munch the way through 64GB of data.
What you should be asking is WHY are manufacturer's removing SD support at the very point that Google finally makes them indispensable (Marshmallow now allows SD cards to be merged into system space. So you could conceivably have a 200GB+ system drive!)

FLAC music played off a phone, 4k movies on a 5inch screen.....really?

Use cloud services and you wont ever need a sd card.....everyone has access to wifi if needed.

15 Jun 16 #115
Pull the other one me ole beauty.

I have 1TB of OneDrive cloud storage. Do I use it? Not often. It just isn't as reliable or fast as local storage.

As for 4K videos....I'm not talking about watching them, I'm talking about recording them!

As for FLAC audio - some phones (such as the LG G5) actually have better audio chips than most high end mp3 players. So why shouldn't a mobile phone also serve as a music player?

As I say, just because your usage only warrants 64GB's, that doesn't mean the rest of us conform in the same way.

To do so, please submit a support ticket requesting the return or replacement, and our support agents will guide you through the Return Merchandise Authorization process. Are you serious?
I've just come back after a week in Cornwall. Barely any Vodafone signal for calls, forget about data. Location had <1mb ADSL shared between entire caravan park.
You can stick your cloud storage, I've got 144gb storage combined on my phone and still have to manage that regularly.

Just because I'm in a city 90% of the time doesn't mean I'm prepared to ditch sd storage for the cloud.

17 Jun 16 #125
Wow, I nevere even heard of the Asus before you mentioned it!

Looking at the specs, both phones are almost identical, except for the fact that the Asus has a far superior camera and can record in 4k. Everything else is pretty much the same apart from the body.

If they are both the same price then I would probably go for the Asus purely based on the brand & customer support. I guess the camera would also sway me. Infact, even if the Asus was a little more (say ~£40) than the OnePlus3, I would still be tempted for the Asus.
Having said that, the OnePlus3 looks amazing and I for one am tempted.

Does anyone know when the Asus is being released?

I think what we need is a comparison table of phones of this spec (or similar) and their price. that way, we should be able to see at a glance who is offering the best value for money. How many phones out there are on SnapDragon 820 and Adreno 530 and offer 4-6GB memory ?

Received mine today. Order still showing as Pending Shipment when the postie knocked.

Have to say very impressed so far. I'm currently using a HTC 10 (the Very deal) and right now I'm struggling to see the HTC as being worth the £160 over the OP3. I'm going to give it a couple of days to be sure then the HTC will go bye-bye.

Shame about no expandable storage but as I travel to the US a lot, the dual sim is useful.

For those criticising the lack of a QHD screen, it's not noticeable unless you look for the issue and the battery life so far seems good.

And it's fast.....

17 Jun 16 #139
Did you get an email first, or did it just arrive. I ordered on 14th (evening), it originally said dispatching by 19th for arrival by 23rd - but that's gone and all it says now is "pending shipping" without any dates. All confusing.

Did you apply the memory management fix to yours or are you going to leave it as it is?
silo24
18 Jun 16 #141
Don't see the point fixing something that's not really broken. This thing is fast enough anyway that reopening most apps that have been aggressively killed isn't going to hamper it too much.

Carl Pei claims it's part of their power management strategy to kill apps in memory to reduce overall power consumption.
rev6
18 Jun 16 #142
Android does this by design. There's absolutely no point having so much RAM if the device kills applications well before it can fill up even half of it.
silo24
18 Jun 16 #143
Understood. I don't believe that this is purely a battery saving exercise, there is probably another reason for it.

Only thing I can think of is that perhaps the software optimisation for the hardware isn't quite there yet. Maybe a last minute switch to 6GB from 4GB?

Either way, really not an issue for most users I would suggest.
0BS1D1AN
18 Jun 16 #144
Thanks for that, I also believe it can't just be a battery saving option, RAM uses so little battery as it is. But applying the fix on XDA is probably not detrimental in any way. But it does beg the question whether it's really necessary if you can already multitask with 12 apps.

20 Jun 16 #151
There are only a couple of uses for the higher resolution that I can think of:

1) Using your phone for VR. When you have the phone that close to your face, you can definitely see the pixels quite clearly on a 1080p phone. That's reduced on 2K. Then again, with a 2K screen, current phones usually run so hot when doing 3D that it needs a special headset with a fan (see Galaxy VR).

2) Reading kanji or some similar characters that are quite detailed, where you can fit a lot more on the screen while still being readable. This doesn't apply so much to latin alphabets.
soulhunter123777
20 Jun 16 #152
Their strapline is "Never Settle"... except you're settling for a 1080p screen (the Galaxy S7 has 1440p despite being over 1cm smaller!), an average battery capacity, and no SD card slot.

21 Jun 16 #155
Personally I think the 1080p is an advantage, not a disadvantage.

There are arguments over the benefits of 4k resolution vs 1080p on 50" TVs, yet people still persist on jabbering on about 1080p being "old hat" on a 5 to 6 inch phone screen? It's ridiculous.

Anything over 1080p on a screen this small is a complete and utter waste. If you think otherwise, you're wrong, and no it isn't because you have awesome eyesight. I'd happily take the performance gains from rendering at a lower resolution thanks.

Yeah I wasn't sure it'd work but it did. I would have just waited for a different phone if it didn't. The main reason for switching for me is that I am out of storage (only 16GB with no microSD slot) and battery life is pretty poor at the moment. Both I can live with (I've just deleted a lot of my songs and photos and bring my battery pack everywhere) but they are annoying.

Well let's see how long my "new" order will take.

Ulti
26 Jun 16 1 #174
I made my original order on June 16th and was quoted June 25th dispatch, June 29th delivered but they sent me an email saying:

Thank you for ordering the OnePlus 3! Unfortunately, your order is experiencing a delay and will be dispatched at the first week of July.

We hate to be the bearers of bad news, and we’d like to make it up to you. If you paid for priority shipping, all shipping fees will be automatically refunded in a week. Additionally, we’d like to offer you this coupon code worth $20 (or your local equivalent) with free shipping that can be freely redeemed on oneplus.net. You can check the status of your order under “My Orders”.

It didn't mention anything about expedited delivery but I just wanted to see how much extra it would be but it was marked as "Free" after I had entered the code. I had previously asked them to check the status of my order via Live Chat though but never pushed for a voucher.

I am sick and tired of the mobile companies compromising battery in the name of slimness. we don't want a paper phone. 3000mah battery on this is a joke and it never uses the full 6Gb ram to save the damn battery. yes there are tweaks available to do that but you have to give up on battery then. that's ridiculous. I ordered one of these a couple of days after released, they promised me delivery by a certain day but failed. The day before the day I was supposed to get the delivery they sent me an email giving me $20.00 to spend in shop with FREE POSTAGE. The shop was empty at first but then stock arrived and I ordered a £14.99 Case. Both phone and case arrived a few days later and WOW what an impressive phone it is. I am actually no expert, having usually had very cheap phones or hand downs from friends, but this has blown my mind. People I show the phone have been impressed with the feel of the phone too. Battery (for a new user who is exploring features and testing it) is great, but the Doze function (google this) has been a little problematic and I believe this is to be fixed soon. The Forums for OnePlus, the community are very helpful too. If you have £309 and you want a very high spec flagship phone (NEW, NOT SECOND HAND), I would certainly recommend it on my experience over the last few weeks.

You're comparing a snapdragon 650 phone with an 820 phone? And one which is officially distributed in the UK and supported to one where you buy from an importer (currently running Android 5.1)? Most importers will also state that if you flash a custom rom you'll void your warranty.

I bought this last week. It's already the best phone I've ever owned. Speed tested, it beat every other phone, going straight to #1 slot on Antutu's site.

Ok, it's not a 2k screen, but 2k screens are **** for battery life. That's why a lot of people are going back to 1080p screens (or lower if you're Apple).
The screen still looks pretty much pin-sharp and it's definitely the best-looking screen I've seen on a phone in a while.

update is seeding now through and I think screen issues solved with software update.
with regards to screen resolution I personally feel 1080p is sufficient and will not affect day to day use, side by side next to my Note Edge couldn't notice much of a difference apart from maybe my Note was brighter.

customer service for One Plus is the worst I've ever had so if you do have worries about the phone and possibly feel you may have to deal with them I'd stay clear until you're certain any hardware issues they have are resolved

RAM management fixed with the patch as is screen calibration, do much so that the anandtech review said it was now one of the best calibrated screens they had ever tested. The sd card slot missing is not a biggie to me. Always seemed to cause more bother than not in Android. Could never get core apps to store data there properly. The merging of it into a single storage pool is a bad idea as you cripple the performance, this has UFS 2 internal storage which is 2-3 times faster than any sd card. Mixing that with an sd card would seriously slow things down. Seriously tempted...

I would like a SD card slot but photos can be bumped to the cloud so not really a deal breaker for me. Good to now have android pay as well.

Also I've not got an issue with the smaller battery. I think it's more efficient as I get about the same as I did with the 2. Plus it charges fast.

Ok lets talk facts from someone that own both an s6 & One+ 3, the S6 battery life was terrible until the Marshmallow update, and I hated the phone till i got Marshmallow on it, it's now acceptable and usually lasts a day with moderate usage. The One+ 3 has a 20% larger battery and is only pushing a 1080p screen compared to the QHD screen of the S6. and has a more efficient cpu so the battery life is way better. My one+ 3 usually lasts a full 24hrs before needing to charge and it charges faster with Dash Charge.

Would I have upgraded from the S6 to the One+3 if it was my own money rather than a work requirement??? No probably not if the S6 was running Marshmallow and was lasting a day. The camera is better on the S6 but the software is better on the One+ 3, no annoying Touchwiz crap, no lagging or memory leakage issue and no bloatware either that you get with the S6.

9 Jul 16 1 #301
So your Note 4 lost ~£150 in 12 months after it had already lost ~£250 from its original selling price of ~£550-600 when it was released...

The Note 4, not your specific unit but the Note 4 overall, is now about two years sold, so in two years it's lost ~£350-400. That's more than any OnePlus phone can possibly lose unless you had to pay someone to take it away, because no OnePlus phone has ever been sold new for more than £309 (or £329 as of Monday).

I believe the 16GB OnePlus One was £230 new in the UK two years ago, and they seem to be selling used now for between £100 and £150. That means that it's lost somewhere between £80 and £130 in two years, far better than the £350-400 the Note 4 has lost.

In other words, using your own numbers, the Note 4 has lost more value in one year than the OnePlus One has lost in two. Not sure how you came to the conclusion that the Note 4 has had "less value loss". Obviously all these figures are approximate, but the Note 4 seems to have comfortably lost more value than the OnePlus One ever had!

Agreed! they always seems to settle for 1 crucial feature less. With this (3), no SD card (or QHD screen), with 2, no NFC though Android Pay was getting popular.

Considering this phone is a low priced high end phone, I suppose most people would prefer an SD card. And their excuse is pathetic. What's wrong with giving users choice? And I normally use it to store files/pics. Not for extension of internal memory.

In case of Quad HD screen, to be a flagship killer, I think it's crucial! As for a budget phone, it's okay (even Moto G4 has FHD). QHD is much nicer than FHD. Ignorant people said the same thing for HD to FHD for phones, and FHD to 4K for TV. But it really makes things sharper. Especially reading things like magazines or others that have Sarif fonts. There is huge difference. And I am taking about 5.5 inch. I have a Moto X Force, and had FHD ones earlier. It's worth it in a premium phone. And I don't think it drains much battery - my phone lasts 2 days easily if I dont play games and use it quite a lot!

I consider OnePlus phones as a good budget phone (not great because of bad support is not good and know several friends who had hardware problems with OnePlus).

It's got a whopping 64GB of internal memory. No faffing about moving apps to SD card. No faffing about setting up apps to store pics etc on SD card.

The resolution is great and more than that is unnecessary and the difference is barely noticeable to most people's eyes.

People will continue to pay £200-300 more for Samsung/Sony/HTC/LG/Apple phones and have a superiority complex about this because they've paid so much more that they feel the need to explain why the Oneplus 3 somehow isn't all that. But read reviews on almost every respected media site you can find and you'll realise it's the Oneplus 3 owners who are the winners.

Brilliant phone.

I've been using one since launch and the only only fault I can say about it is the lack of sd card support. Everything else about the phone has just blown anything else out of the water.

There have been a couple of os updates to the phone and the latest (3.2) has dramatically improved response time and speed. It is by far the fastest phone I've used in a long time (as you'd expect with the chipset powering it). Very very rarely gets hot, battery life is superb, I generally finish the working day at about 75% and then by the time I get to bed after spending a few hours faffing with it it's down to circa 45%. The dash charge tech really does charge as quickly as they claim (I rarely charge overnight now, just pop it on charge when I wake up for half an hour when I'm getting ready and that gets it back up to circa 90%).

There is a small bug I think still present with the fingerprint reader and it being in the pocket and trying to scan the leg occasionally (it's only done this to me a few times in the last month or so). Oh, the fingerprint sensor is ridiculously quick, faster than iPhones I've compared it to of friends.

Screen quality? Absolutely fantastic as far as I'm concerned, used to have a LG G4 and that was supposed to be a decent screen but this one is so sharper despite it 'only' being a 1080p. Yes, you can maybe maybe tell the difference with a top of the line Samsung for example but then that's fine as you'll pay twice as much.

Cant fault photo quality, quick to launch, focuses pretty quickly. It's not the best but it's certainly not crap (if anything I'd rate it as good as the LG g4 camera...!)

Really not sure what else there is to say about it but it's the best phone I've owned.

Got one 30mins after it was released, using it to write this post. it's a cracking phone, never crashed or frozen, battery last a full day and I use it heavily for satnav and other stuff, never have it down. if anyone is wanting a new phone, get it before tomorrow it's going up to £339 due to the £ and € changes!!

After way too many hours of research, just ordered mine.

I'm coming from a 3yo Moto RAZRi which has been really struggling with today's apps, so I'll be pretty easy to please. In a family of iPhone users (5SE and 6-plus) but can't justify that outlay.

What case/s is everyone getting ?

Not quite sure what you mean , crap brand, more like new brand 3rd year running. Highly questionable, you could've said that with the oneplus one, it proved itself, i own one and here we are on number 3. Reliance on community garbage? The phone runs oxygen OS , made my oneplus far slicker than touchwiz not community driven . If it's cyanogen you refer to that's optional rom you can install , personally cyanogen mod and cyanogenOS is even better than oxygen. There's a reason google wanted to snap up cyanogen for a billion .
Make up your own minds though

It's true that higher than FHD will likely not be noticeable for most users in day to day tasks, so I think it was the right call for this phone to help keep price down and battery life up, however I wouldn't say there is no need for higher resolution/pixel density on smartphones. If you use your phone for VR in Google Cardboard etc. a higher res screen will be noticeable.

I was in exactly the same boat as you, I'm upgrading from a 2 year old Oneplus one.
It took me about 10 days of dithering around before I pulled the trigger last Thursday. The latest update 3.2.1 helped me decide to go for it, along with the fact that IMO 310 quid is a reasonable amount of money to pay for a new phone that I intend to keep for 2 year's.
I've had nothing but a good experience with the 1+1 over the last 2 year's and hopefully the 1+3 will serve me just as well.
I got the EE deal for existing customers that was on here a couple of months ago, 16gb unlimited texts and calls for £16.99 a month, but they reduced it for me down to £15.50 per month for the first year.
I got this case from eBay because of the quick delivery, but will get something a bit better once the better cases start to filter through.

Samsung S6 @ £349 at the moment. http://shop.samsung.com/uk/samsung-galaxy-s6-32gb-gold-282733/

That's higher than 2k screen that's also OLED so doesn't drain battery as everyone claims.

I used to have a OP2 until I had to return to OnePlus to fix a problem on the fingerprint scanner. It was replaced by a note 5 which I still love today but the battery just doesn't last long enough. I'm always getting less then 4 hours of screen on time before it dies where as I could consistently get over 5 hours on the OP2 before.
So, my question is, how much screen on time is every owner getting on the OP3?
matt101101
10 Jul 16 #355
To hand I have an iPhone 6, Galaxy S6, Galaxy Note 2 and Vodafone Smart Ultra 6 along with some cheap, non-smartphone PAYG devices.

Unfortunately, I don't have a Nexus 5X or anything sufficiently similar that I could draw any kind of useful comparison for you.

What I can say is that, as of yet, I've had no problems with my OP3. I forced the 3.2.1 update yesterday using a German VPN and it's made an already blisteringly quick phone even quicker! The sRGB mode also seems to work quite well, if that's your kind of thing.
matt101101

Doesn't the S6 have fairly horrible battery life anyway, irrespective of what display technology it uses? Maybe it's been improved if it's got a MM update, I don't know...

10 Jul 16 #357
Thanks. so compared to the value for money you get for the smart ultra, would you recommend this device still? the other phone i was considering was an honor 5c or smart ultra for value. but if this is better value long term then this may edge it....

This was my experience - posted elsewhere on HUKD 1 month ago so copied here

I have a OnePlus One with a software glitch that means - after connected to WiFi for several hours - Data (2G/3G/4G etc) will NOT re-connect after leaving WiFi.
The only fix is to turn the phone off and on.

This problem occured 7 months after purchase (12 month warranty). They insisted I booked a "Remote Session" with an engineer. Unfortunately there were no slots. I checked daily and there were no slots. I emailed back and said for them to book me a slot and I'll take whatever time they give me. Oh no, they can't do that! I have to book it myself - except there are no slots!! They refused to accept the phone to be fixed without going through this Remote Session. So a year later, I still have this problem :disappointed: They closed my support ticket as I didn't book a remote session  Terrible company.

Would have paid on Credit Card and got my money back that way, but they insisted at the time to pay via PayPal.
Would have taken them to Civil Court but no UK address to issue summons.
Couldn't take the issue up with PayPal as >6 months since purchase.

Personally I'll never buy one of their phones again. Only because I spent >£200 do I still have this phone.
matt101101
10 Jul 16 #359
Have you actually used OxygenOS on an OP3? It's certainly not bloated or unoptimised, it's bloody quick and seems to be pretty much stock Android Marshmallow with a few, usually pretty useful, tweaks thrown in.

Personally, I think it's much nicer than TouchWiz, which is the Android skin I've had the most time using.

It's close in the value stakes between the SU6 and OP3, though you have to bear in mind that one is a £100 phone and the other's a £300 phone.

I'd say the SU6 is great if you don't care about phones and just want something decent which will cover the basics well and the OP3 is great if you do care about phones and want something relatively high end but without that crazy ~£600 price tag.

matt101101
10 Jul 16 #366
I agree, their hardware is top notch but their software has always left something to be desired. My Note 2 has been running stock Android for years now, I just got sick of TouchWiz.

If Samsung offered their devices with stock Android as an option, they'd be a much more attractive proposition. Well, to me anyway...

If it's a software hitch surely a hard reset/ or flash would fix it, no wonder OP aren't that interested in helping? Regardless something as to give if you spend £300 rather than £500+ on a SG7 for similar spec. There phones are going for £385 on Amazon!
Firefly1
10 Jul 16 #376
Well I admittedly self-diagnosed it with a Software glitch because Turning off & on fixes it.
However I did do a full factory reset (and separately downloaded/flashed a stable version) and that didn't help. I also read a couple of complaints on OPO forums that had the exact same issue and no solution offered by OPO. I never got the opportunity for a remote session with them so have never found out - still have the problem but admittedly can't afford to splash out on a new phone yet.

Would have thought this looks better on the phone as sticking a black cover on it completely hides the phone from view.

I have been waiting a few weeks to check reviews and updates but finally ordered a OP3 tonight.
Bought an Orzly clear case for £3.99 and a Yootech tempered screen protector.

Also, I cracked my OPO screen (best phone I've ever owned by far) a while ago and found the customer service to be extremely helpful and quick at replying. It was a bit expensive so I stupidly used a third party company to 'fix it'... Disaster. Lesson learned.

Edit : Post above is the same case I ordered.

I've got the same case, albeit not that specific brand, on my OP3 and it looks pretty nice. It doesn't hide the design of the phone, but still offers a decent amount of protection from scratches and scuffs (though I suspect its drop protection is fairly limited). Mine came with a glass screen protector too, but I'm saving that for when the pre-installed plastic one is knackered.

The whole lot was only £2.99 delivered, but the listing has since been removed from eBay. It was removed by eBay, who said:

"We had to remove this listing from the site and you're not required to complete the transaction. If you've already sent payment, the sale should process as normal and you don't have anything to worry about. If you have any questions about delivery, please check tracking or contact your seller. If you run into any trouble along the way eBay is here to help. Please visit the Resolution Centre to help resolve any problems you may encounter."

No idea why, it arrived in good time and was exactly as described...

6gb ram is so unnecessary. 4gb and £50 off the price would have been a much better offering. I'm not sure you'll notice the difference of having the extra ram in everyday use.
matt101101
11 Jul 16 1 #393
Only problem is, 2GB of RAM hasn't been worth £50 for a long time...

For reference, I bought an 8GB DDR3L SODIMM the other day and it cost me £22 and some pence.

EDIT: 2GB of DDR3 is less than 10 quid and that's buying a single unit as a normal consumer.
DocRobotnik
11 Jul 16 #394
Except that phone manufacturers don't charge retail prices for ram any more than they do internal storage.
SilverBlack
11 Jul 16 1 #395
4G ram and a 32GB option would have knocked £50 off the price so £259.
Most of the rumours suggested this but it never happened.
dudedude
11 Jul 16 #396
This uses 12GB LPDDR4 chips, they are new tech not really comparable to DDR3 for PCs.

However it's still not going to add more than about £20 to the price.
dudedude
11 Jul 16 #397
try an LG G5
matt101101
11 Jul 16 1 #398
There's still no way the phone would have been £259 if they just left off 2GB of RAM. Most likely, it would still have been £309, but it would just have less RAM.
matt101101
11 Jul 16 1 #399
I know, I just couldn't find a price for 2GB DDR4 (do they even make DDR4 so small?).

My point was that knocking off 2GB of RAM would not have knocked anywhere near 50 quid off the retail price of the phone.
warlockuk
11 Jul 16 #400
Admittedly I'm comparing that to my old LG G3. Which phones/tests? No-name Chinese phones with massive batteries? What happens when you normalise the mAh levels between devices? Got any references?

Don't get me wrong, 2k screens are really nice. But this screen is really nice, too. Everything looks outstanding. Battery is great. Power is great. Everything about this phone is great, it's literally - and I don't say this lightly - the best phone I've ever owned.
dudedude
11 Jul 16 1 #401
the chips are LPDDR4, not DDR4.LPDDR4 is twice as fast as DDR4. The chips used are measured in gigabits, not gigabytes like regular DDR4. So this phone has 4 * 12 gigabit chips. A 4 gigabyte phone would have 4 * 8 gigabit chips. (note that there is also lpddr3 (which is half as fast) and lpddr2 (a quarter as fast) - cheaper phones won't use lpddr4).

As I understand it, the snapdragon 820 REQUIRES LPDDR4 (rather than LPDDR3), so their choices would have been 2 * 12 gigabit (3GB), or 4 * 8 gigabit (4GB).

The word is that LPDDR4 costs around $8/gigabyte, so roughly $24/$32/$48 respectively. But it's possible there is a slight premium for the 12 Gb chips over the 8 Gb, so it's adding perhaps £20 to the retail price over a 4GB.
Topper1900
12 Jul 16 #402
You could argue 32GB is also sufficient memory but you'd hope OnePlus designers have already weighed up all these decisions.

No it doesn't. There are optional ones you can buy from OnePlus, but I'd recommend getting some Xiaomi Hybrids instead; they're ~£15 and almost certainly sound better than whatever OnePlus will sell you. Also, if you get the silver ones, they match the OnePlus 3 rather nicely.

I ordered one of the generic cases in sandstone. They are great and not bulky. I was a bit concerned there wasn't much protection, so ended up ordering an otterbox for more robust use (£20 - but I had a £9 voucher they sent me because the phone was delayed). Not bad, but a bitter bulkier. Both obscure the unibody design.

I bought the OP3 to replace my launch day N5. I wanted a phone that should last me a few years, and wanted a phone that had potential to be supported by xda & their devs. It took me a while to adjust to the larger screen size, but everything else has been a significant improvement. The screen is better. The camera is better. The battery life is better. The speed is better. Bootlocker easily unlocked. The price is better (N5 cost me £350 + del).
For what I want in a phone, the OP3 may as well be a Nexus in everything but name. I was going to hold out for the 2016 Nexus, but it is looking like it'll be more or less the same thing as the OP3, but with a resolution I don't want, and likely to be a higher price.

The only reason to buy a Nexus over the OP3 is the software updates. OP3 is still a risk, unless you don't mind relying on devs (and if you have a Nexus, then you probably don't mind relying on the devs).
