The new Moto G4 (2016), announced a couple of weeks back (this is the Gen4 model, not to be confused with the old "4G" model), seems like a good deal.
Price on the Motorola site is £169, but I used:

Also, strangely, this model does not have NFC.
As people have been asking, here are the main differences between the new one (gen4) and last year's MotoG (gen3):
Biger screen - 5.5 inch v 5.0 inch
approx 40% better screen resolution - 1080 x 1920 pixels (401ppi) v 720 x 1280 pixels (294 ppi)
approx. 80% faster processor (at least on paper, see geekbench benchmarks)

Originally I had the same dilema.
They seem to be identical, except:
Moto G4 has better processor, runs MM (Ultra 6 is still on Lpop), G4 is water-resistant and 'looks' a bit more expensive - the Ultra 6 looks a bit plasticky. Also, the Ultra 6 has the Vodafone bloatware and you need to unlock it. On the other hand, it's only £130.
At the end of the day, I went for the Moto G4 because (1) it is newer and therefore it will be supported by upgrades etc for another 2-3 years, (2) it has a newer OS, (3) it's slightly faster (4) looks more 'classy' (subjective) and (5) does not need unlocking.

Thinking about this, the Lenovo K5 or the Wileyfox Swift. Any other suggestions please? Would consider last years Moto G if it came down in price a bit more but at the moment there's not much difference between the price of last year's 16gb model and this year's model at the moment.

I got onto Motorola chat about that and was informed that all phones ordered via Moto Maker are dual sim, but despite repeatedly requesting a link to where that was stated on the website I couldn't get any substantiation from them, so don't want to risk the disappointment, then hassle of returning it should that information prove incorrect.
P.S. I anybody can confirm that all Moto Maker phones are supplied dual sim as standard, I'd be extremely grateful.

This is the first Lenovo-Moto phone and yours was the last Google-Moto phone. Take a look at a recent Thinkpad to see Lenovo steer a flagship into an ice floe.

Now as some wally always comes along on Iphone threads and wants to compare IOS with Android here goes...
when you buy this phone there is no g'tee you will ever get the next version of Android as you have to just wait and pray motorola will choose to update and release their version for this phone.
if they do it will be at least 6 months after the main release. on one occasion a motorola Android upgrade caused my moto g to brick. it had to be replaced because it was less than a year old. if it had been older motorola wouldn't have replaced it. when upgraded several of my bought apps wouldn't work.
you also have no g'tee apps you buy will work on any android phone and a lot won't on specific hardware.
you don't get volume and phone control on your earpods. add apps at your peril as often apps interact on android and slow the os down or cause it to crash at random. .
good OS isn't it ?

What you've said is mostly rubbish I'm afraid. First off almost every major manufacturer will upgrade their version of Android although yes you do sometimes have to wait a few months. But.....Google Play services update all your main apps and they perform the same whatever version of Android your running. People who are running even KitKat have an experience pretty much the same as those running the latest and greatest version. Of course they will miss out on a few features but it's by no means a deal breaker.
If you like locked down os's with no expandable storage and constantly having to use your device the way Apple dictates rather than the way you want - all power to you.
Also, because of limited storage many ios devices struggle to be able to even download the latest software versions and often run like trash if they can. Google it if you don't agree. Android will always be better than IOS.

own a 16gb 3rd and it's best phone i've ever had (seconded by a gen1) but this seems essentially same specs but with a 5.5in screen - i actually see this as a bad thing, the gen1 was a perfectly usable 4.5in and gen3 is 5in and i have trouble using it in one hand on the move.
i'm all for moto g's, superb range of budget phones (and i've used each) all on stock android with very fast updates and it took me ages to buy the 3rd because the price on the 16gb remained so high (had to have it for water resistance, cheapest phone i've seen with this feature), but this seems to have only a single front speaker same as gen3 - with the larger screen this becomes very noticeable. larger battery is nice as my 3rd already lasts 2 days even with gaming and music on my daily commute, but with price and screen size this is edging more toward mid-range than budget darling, i'd rather the moto g stay as a smaller cheaper but very capable phone (guess the moto e's are taking that niche)
at least they haven't split the fanbase with 2 different specced versions, why couldn't all 3rd's have 2gb ram :disappointed:
edit - seems they have indeed, there is a plus version with same specs apart from 16mp camera and more ram. confusingly 2gb on 16gb version, 3gb on 32gb version and 4gb on 64gb version. dunno if that'll be available in UK though

Sorry guys but I just don't get this. I have bank cards etc that can be used for Oyster and they are free. Whilst it may be slightly more convenient to take out a phone than a bank card out of a wallet, I see so many people leaving their grossly oversized too-big-to-carry phones on their desks, in a way that they never need to with their wallets, that there is no WAY I would be adding a payment mechanism to something left lying around so casually.
I accept I may be missing something but to me this obsession with NFC just doesn't make sense. I'm just about to trade up my ageing Razr-I which does have NFC, and will not be mourning its loss!

Thanks, interesting but that is still a 5.2" screen , i think 5 is the absolute max, biggest i have had is 4.7 and it would take some convincing to concede to owning 5", give me an 8310 anyday ha ha.
Currently have z3c but i have broken it and reluctant to get a z4c due to the terribly weak glass used on the front and back (same as z3c) , using a 1mini2 now which is a solid phone but its slow even with cynogen 12.1 so on the lookout, i see nothing appealing on the market though .
I used to be quite into my phones, too much of a ball ache now as finding one fit for purpose is a tiresome task.

My immediate negatives are the fact it looks like an iphone from the front, its white, and shin y- i must be hard to please but those are some poor aesthetic choices in my opinion makes it look very cheap, not the most important thing but still a negative hopefully they will do a dark colour with a better texture and loose the button on the front, what is that about ? It needs a slim bezel all around too.
That said i have no idea what it will cost so maybe a cheapo budget thing

Not to start a fanboy war (although you pretty much have). I've just bought the 64gb G4 plus and have to point out that Android is absolutely inferior to iOS. iOS is much more secure by default - it's based on BSD for goodness sakes - if you don't know what BSD is or how secure BSD is, you really shouldn't run around on a forum saying android is better. iOS stems from pure unix, which is why it's so stable, secure and months down the line, it runs as fast as the day you bought it. Apple devices aren't locked down - sure, you can't jailbreak them (at least as much anymore) but why would you want to open up a HUGE vulnerability in the OS?? iOS devices struggle to download the latest software? That's just simply android-fanboy nonsense....
Like I say, i've bought this phone because it's a lot of phone for the money, but seriously, android has been copying iOS for years, so it's very silly to say what you did.

That's pretty funny, sorry i couldn't read that and not inform you how wrong you are - I'm not trying to argue but check yourself before making such proclamations , apple OS are far from secure and they are locked down, hence why a ton of people don't use them based on the restrictions they set, they are arbitrarily designed to be 'locked down' , in fact if it wasn't for such a lockdown i imagine the OS would have been ripped to pieces in an open market like google play; we would see how secure it was then. Thanks. Ive no idea to be honest. I did something similar a while ago on my old Moto 4G phone, it was ok and worked but it just looked a bit naff stuck on to it like that. I'm so impressed with the Smart Ultra 6 I have now though, really its a breath of fresh air. If the Moto G range add NFC I may be tempted back in the future.

I went for the Plus because of the better camera. According to DxO it has as good a camera as the iPhone 6s plus, the joint 4th best on a smart phone at the moment.

Well the 617 is hardly old. It is using cortex A53 which is current generation. If anything is outdated it is the 650 as that is using A72 alongside A53 with the A73 being announced.
But yes for the majority of users the 650 should be a fair bit quicker to use.

Android runs just as fast on 2gb as 3gb. I've seen speed tests on youtube where the 2 gb model of a phone outperforms the 3 gb model. If I can find the link I'll post it.

Hmmmm IOS has actually been copying Android far more than the other way around!
From widgets, notifications, adopting NFC and larger screen sizes - remember Steve Jobs reckoned nobody would want 4 inch phones because they were too big.
iOS and Android copy each other, that's pretty much a fact, but you cannot deny that this time around, Android has copied A LOT to compete with iOS 9. Android app permissions have been a joke since the dawn of Android, it's only really thanks to millions of viruses and the fact that iOS is superior in the permissions department that Android have finally added functionality to control app permissions.

No this is a proper import by Motorola and is simply being shipped from there so all included in the price.
I think I have been very unlucky with he delivery of mine then if everyone is getting them that quickly.
If Amazon gets them in soon I might scrap the order and buy from there. I'll lose my customised colours etc but I can live with that.

from what i've read it's snapdragon 617 issues, well known for throttling & overheating. i wouldn't get a phone using this chipset personally.
It arrived approx 35 mins ago for me. First impressions: it is VERY BIG, this is coming from someone who had an iPhone 6+ and then got an iPhone SE. Android seems to want permission (well, Google does) to do all kinds of things - very, very scary, iOS isn't like this. The phone is getting very, very hot whilst it's on charge. Will post an update late tonight when I've had time to play with the phone properly.

Never used a smart ultra 6 so I can't really say. I'm just saying it feels huge compared to the SE and I *think* it's bigger than the iPhone 6+ (but i've not compared dimensions).
Since the device charged, it isn't hot, it just seems to be when it's charging. I've read reviews that says it gets very hot whilst playing games - I don't play any mobile games so can't verify this, but I can believe it.

Wouldn't worry too much. I didn't get anything like an e-mail order notification for at least 24 hours. I was a bit concerned as it's something you normally get pretty much instantly. Motorola Chat on their website are pretty good if you want confirmation that your order has been received.

Ok, so a summary after having the phone for over 24 hours.. I'll be comparing to my iPhone SE which is what i've switched from:
1) Battery life is pretty woeful. I'm having to charge it 2-3 times per day (I was charging my iPhone SE once per day, twice per day under heavy usage)
2) Google has fixed 40 vulnerabilities in android - but because this isn't a nexus, motorola has to push out the update - and at the time of writing, they haven't, which means that i'm knowingly walking around with a device with a minimum of 40 vulnerabilites... very scary stuff indeed. This is a design flaw not with this phone, but with android itself
3) When apps are grouped together, notifications seem to stop working. This doesn't happen on iOS and so I can't figure out why it's not working on android.
4) When charging the phone, it gets quite hot at the back - not a terrible point, just a note. My phone (to my knowledge) hasn't overheated like some people have said
5) Phone has crashed twice in 24 hours (rebooted on first occasion and sorted itself on second occasion). I've had no crashes on my iPhone SE since I bought it on launch (might be lucky, but this is a direct comparison based on my experience)
6) It doesn't seem possible to remove the 'google search' bar at the top of the screen - this is very frustrating because if I could delete it, I could fit 4 more apps on the screen.
7) huge, huge amounts of camera lag on snapchat (very disappointed with this indeed) :sunglasses: Because the fingerprint scanner protrudes out of the phone, it gets knocked easily, meaning you might get a vibration telling you the phone didn't recognise the fingerprint... - design flaw
9) takes absolutely forever to turn on - I compared it to my iPhone SE and I didn't time it, but it must have took a serious 20 seconds longer to boot android than iOS
good points:
1) camera is good for taking photographs and recordings
2) Fingerprint scanner is a bit faster than the iPhone
3) It's quite snappy and quick once you boot into the device
4) doesn't feel like a cheap phone (imho)
5) charges very quickly with the turbo boost. I can go from 10% to 100% in around 1 hour 10 mins
And I think that overall sums up this phone. It has some good points, but if you're coming from the iPhone SE, the boot up time is unacceptably slower, even for a cheaper phone and the security issues scare me to death. I'm going to play with the phone for another few days and if motorola don't update the phone, i'm going back to my iPhone because I refuse to walk around with a vulnerable version of android.

That is a fair initial review, but you have to remember your comparing a budget Moto G against an iphone which is triple the price! Compare against the similar priced Nexus 6P and you will have a different winner I'm sure

I bought the Moto G4, 4gb ram and 64gb storage. The cost of the phone I purchased (without a discount) was approx £260 and the 16gb iPhone SE is £359 - so for £99 you can get yourself a far faster phone all around, but you get much less storage and it isn't expandable (or you could pay £425 for the 64gb iPhone SE). Either way - the iPhone is not triple the price of this phone, albeit the iPhone is definitely the more expensive of the two.
So I would say it comes down to cost: you do get a lot of phone for your money, but the processor seems to be the bottleneck here.

I agree with in$anity's plan but as I don't get that much time to get on I have just been sending codes to people at random.
I have now been playing with my Moto G4 (standard) and am trying to get used to the size. It seems well built but not much of a performance boost from my previous Moto X 2014 (2nd gen). From a benchmark they came out roughly the same but the Moto G4 did slightly better at retaining battery. The advantages of this phone are that its dual sim, has microSD (put a 64gb card into it) and as its newer will get all of the android updates for at least 2 more years. I imagine the Moto X won't be supported much longer.
From a quick google search last night I did find that motorola/Lenovo have just released the source code for the Moto G4 so this may mean root / custom roms will be possible?

I personally don't think its too big, will just take time to get used to it. I am quite a big person though with big hands, smaller people may find it too large.
It has lost 21% charge in 3.5hours with moderate use. It is projected to die around 9.30pm tonight with being fully charged at 8.30am this morning. The phone is very new though and I would imagine performance will be enhanced with future firmware updates. At least this is my experience with previous phones.

Less than 48 hours - left China last Saturday afternoon and DHL attempted delivery on Monday morning.
I wasn't in so arranged for it to be re-delivered to a parcel locker - it should have been there yesterday but only arrived today, so that took as long as sending it from China to the UK did!

That's interesting - either you have a faulty battery or your usage is mahusive; my experience is different: on day 3 of my ownership of a 2/16GB motoG4 (not the plus), I picked it up from its charger this morning at 6 o'clock, used it all day *moderatelly* - i.e. perhaps 20 mins of phone calls, 30 mins of videos, 30 mins of music, 20 mins of browsing, 20 mins other - and now, at 6.35pm it shows 52% full battery.
Wow, so I'm probably looking at Friday with any luck. Did you get a time frame for delivery?

Phone battery isn't faulty, but the battery is nothing compared to the iPhone SE (which is what i'm coming from). I took a screenshot for you and others to take a quick glance at:
I can't decide what to do with it. No word from Motorola about the security updates - the phone still has 40 vulnerabilities on it that I am aware of. Battery life is poor (yes, I am a power user, I admit that, but there are phones with far greater battery life than this for not much more money). It's a nice phone - the touch screen definitely isn't as accurate as an iPhone - but I think i'm seeing why iPhones are priced like they are - it's because the materials and OS and security updates are quite simply, better.
Despite the G4 Plus's shortcomings, I don't hate it. But will I sell my iPhone SE and keep the G4 Plus? Or sell the G4 Plus and keep the iPhone.... ugh. Decisions, decisions!

That matches my experience - as a light to moderate user. And for the person who asked, no crashes at all since I got it, 4 days ago.
My only comment is that on a number of occasions the screen seemed to be a bit unresponsive - I had t tap twice to select something. I assume that this was because something was running in the background taking over al CPU cycles - but I am guessing.

I'm going to be selling mine - I think android is absolute trash compared to iOS. Google even asks if you want to send some of your text messages to them for "analysis" - basically, it's a keylogger. Of course, you can say no, but it makes for a very paranoid experience. Google seem to be pushing android because it allows them to mine as much data as they want for their own profit.
Google's backup is absolutely horrendous - it doesn't back up text messages for example, so yesterday, because of the crashing and lag, I formatted my phone - lost all my text messages. I couldn't believe it, iOS has been backing ups texts since day dot. And with those 40 vulnerabilities that came out a few days ago, there has been no word from Motorola/Lenovo about when they'll be patched - will they be patched? I'm walking around with a device which can be hacked!!! Sorry, no, it has to go... Sorry folks but I couldn't return to android again after this - disappointed.

Most of your issues seem to be with Google not the phone so I'm curious why you bought it, especially if you have a new working iPhone already. It's a bit unfair to compare a £150 phone with a £350 phone too. Of course it'll not run as fast etc. What are you running when it crashes?
I haven't recieved my phone yet (it's been waiting to depatch for 3 days) but did own a 1st Gen Moto G and thought that was great for my needs, as a phone, calendar, occasional child distracter and for social media apps etc. I buy a phone at this price as we're virtually forced to get a new smart phone every 3 years and I don't have the cash or the will to spend more than that.

Do unidays codes have expiry dates? I'm just waiting for the first clutch of reviews (press and peer) before jumping in.
Can I ask, what do the guys who've had it here think after one week? I know in$anity has not been impressed either by the OS or by the stability / battery / fingerprint sensor, but what do others think? Does the sensor really keep getting false triggers, is that as you're reaching for the phone or while it's in your pocket? What's the battery life like on pure standby? Any other crash reports?

My Moto G4 wasn't £150 though - I got the top spec - it was £260 (£220ish after discount). the iPhone SE is £359 - so it's only a £99 difference which isn't the £200 difference you mention in your post :stuck_out_tongue:
I bought the android because I was curious about the "open source" software on the likes of f-droid and was interested to see how "good" Marshmallow is, since they've basically copied a lot of things that make the iPhone good. The phone itself isn't too bad - but it runs android and that has to be what I base my opinion on. If android has issues, it gives us, the end users, issues.

Insanity, why don't you just contact Motorola and ask to return it? They have a no quibble return policy so just tell them your unhappiness with it.
There may be 40 issues with Android, but there's probably loads with iPhone too. I've always used Android and I've never had any issues with it.
My phone arrived at the Cambridge delivery centre this morning. I'm in Norfolk so I'm not sure if it'll be with me today. Should it update to Out for Delivery if it's here today?

Is the Plus one worth it? After looking at some reviews, the camera is now making me reconsider. However, i dont really take any photos but is it worth the extra £60? For the Plus 16GB.
I think the screen protector has logos all over it so you'd need a new proper screen protector

For me I think the extra for the Plus is worth it. Fingerprint scanner, 16mp camera and I went for 64gb to get the 4gb ram.

The camera is supposed to be much improved, I've gone for the 64gb version to get the 4GB of RAM as that would outweight the camera quality for me. Shame about the screen protector, seems like more hassle for them to put one on with logos all over it.

I have the ZTE Axon with fingerprint reader - never had any such problems. Don't think it will be an issue
so tempted to buy the G4 plus version with 64gb for myself as well (just bought the g4+ for my friend), can't see where I can choose dual sim + microsd card (on Motorola's marketing page it says to pick this in the motomaker) - maybe that is the default configuration ... dual sim

If those are not necessarily negatives for you, then go for it.
But, I'd recommend waiting for the OnePlus 3 due out on June 14th, then decide which one to go for.

Got the 2/32gb version of the basic G4 with the £10 discount .... and the bonus is that it is DUAL SIM!! Hadn't order dual sim but very pleased about it. SIM 1 is 4G, SIM 2 is 3G and you can nominate one for calls and one for data. Lovely phone, feels great in the hand and buttery smooth to run. Very pleased with my purchase.

Ok, my full review of this phone...
The best two mobiles I've ever owned, was a Nexus 5, and an LG G3. The reason I changed from them is because the Nexus 5 had a design flaw - dirt would get trapped in the front casing just under the screen because it wasn't sealed tight. It bugged me. The LG G3 had a VERY slippery back. Not only that, but I dropped it from waist height on a soft rug and the screen split!
My last two phones were the Moto G 3rd (found the design very boring) and the HTC Desire 626 (god awful battery life and full of bloatware.
Then I saw the Moto G4 on HUKD. A pure Android experience with moto maker. I could add a touch of colour to make this perfect for me. I ordered the 16GB/2GB Standard, in black with a ocean blue accent.
Ordered Sunday night, arrived this morning. I wasn't expecting a charger in the box but there was one, although it's white, and I hate white devices, but it's a charger so nevermind. I was also really surprised it was dual SIM. I have no use for this, however it'll come in handy for those SIMs with £5 credit on them. Can keep them plugged in incase I want anything from Google Play and need to use the credit.
There were also two SIM adapters which enabled you to change a Nano SIM to Micro. Luckily I had already ordered a Micro ready to receive this phone.
Took the factory screen protector with G4 logo on off, and straight away put a Yootech glass screen protector (Amazon - £3.99) on.
Charged it fully and it was warm, but not hot or overheating. Has had intensive use for around 2 hours and I have 84% battery left now.
The screen is gorgeous. Best screen since my LG G3. It's also really fast, no bloatware and smooth to use. It is a big handset, however I use my phone a lot for internet and youtube so it's a fair trade off. It could even potentially replace my Nexus 7 2013 tablet, however I'll keep that as it's brilliant.
The only complaint so far is the VERY large icons within Android on the homepage. I own Nova launcher but I really wanted to use everything stock, but I may have to switch Nova on as the large icons are making the phone feel like a 70 year old's handset!
The back is nice and grippy, but I am worried about that camera lens being scratched up.
Overall, it's brilliant. Well worth the £144 I paid. Shame there's no NFC on this or it would be perfect.

Are you using the standard android launcher? Most people (myself included) prefer to use 'Google Now launcher'. Much cleaner look, and about as stock as you'll get.

As for the size, My note 2 is which I've had since it was released, so that won't be an issue, however, I've got an otterbox case which makes it even bigger, so I'm looking for a slim hard case.

Timez0ne - The screen protector is excellent from Yootech. I ordered two as I always mess them up but the first one went on perfect. Keep forgetting it's even on there. Well worth £3.99.
I'm not sure whether I'll end up using it though. But I thought it'd be handy to keep my cards in too.
Camera is excellent. Probably the best 13MP I've used. It's quick at taking shots.
Paulbarker - The charger I think is just a standard charger. You have to buy the quick one.
I've installed Nova launcher now. The loss of the 'ok google' voice command is a shame though, but I don't think Google Now gives you smaller icons. I'll check.
I'm stupid and change my phone every few months - selling on then buying, selling on, then buying, but this is the first time I've been happy with everything about a handset. The last time I was happy with everything at first glance was the Moto G 3rd, and I only got rid as I felt the back was boring and saw the HTC on offer, which turned out to be shocking.
Battery is now at 74% with intensive use since I took it off charge at 3pm. Not sure why Insanity had to charge it 2-3 times in a day though.

Working fine on mine.
I collected my Plus 64gb one today and am really impressed so far. I like the fact it's made of plastic as it's so lightweight. Coming from an Elephone P8000 it feels much thinner too.
Annoying the screen protector has their logo all over it, if they left it blank we could just leave it on.
I need to buy a slim case and screen protector now.

I ordered mine in the early hours of the Friday morning (direct from Motorola) and delivery was attempted on the Monday morning (last week). Hardly a long wait. It took longer than that for it to be re-delivered to a parcel locker.
Having said that, I do have a lot of Club card points so would possibly have waited and got it on Boost if I'd known Tesco were getting it. I do use my points mainly for restaurants though, where I get 4 x face value.

Yeah that's the problem even with an established Chinese supplier like Xiaomi. Software updates tend to be patchy and delayed, and of course the MIUI interface is an acquired taste. They still haven't brought out Marshmallow for this.
With a Moto G4, you're out the gate with vanilla Android - Marshmallow no less- and will have guaranteed OS updates for at least 2 years.

I think most people will not get paid the TCB as the Unidays code isn't one of their approved ones. Some might get lucky though.
Really impressed with this phone so far. It's super quick and I like the gesture features where you can turn on the torch or the camera just by shaking the phone a certain way. The camera quality (Plus model) is excellent outside, low light less good but most are similar. The fingerprint reader works flawlessly. I've only registered both my thumbs once and it never fails. I quite a heavy user and the battery will easily last 24 hours, I'm not getting more than that though which I expected not to (I also have it paired to a smart watch 24 hours a day as well).
The only negatives I've found is the gallery has been replaced by Google photos which I'll get used to. The stock email application has been removed and replaced by gmail. I just hate conversation view, I've turned it off but it still remains in place. If I get an email from someone I might want to delete that one not the whole thread. Also sometimes to remind me to look at an email later I mark it as unread, it now marks the whole thread as unread which may be 20 messages over a period of years! Anyone with a solution to this I'd be very grateful. I know I could just use a third party email app but I'm always reluctant to type all my email account log in details to a third party app.
I bought a cheap clear silicon case for it for a couple of quid and looks good. The screen protector wasn't great though as was about half a millimetre too big so kept catching on all side, I took it off in the end.

I bought a Yootech glass screen protector for about £4 and it works well. I'm also not keen on Google Photos but it was useful when I had to backup my sd card onto my Google Drive as I needed to reformat it in Android M. I've never got on with the Gmail app as it also deletes the whole chain too. I think individual emails can only be deleted or unread on the desktop version. I've used K9 ever since I've had an android phone hand have never had a problem with it.
I've had the basic G4 model for about 2 days and it's running really well. Much faster than my last phone, a 1st gen Moto G. I use about 50% of the battery in a day. I am still getting used to the size of the phone though. It does fit in my jeans pocket but am trying not to put it in my back pocket as that's how I killed my last phone!

Does using the turbo charger every time have a bad effect on the battery or is it fine to use it everyday? The phone does get quite hot while being charged but not so when using a normal charger.

I wanted a clear one as had chosen the colours for back and camera surround so silly to cover them up. It's not going to prevent damage from a large drop but just general scratch resistance was what I was after.
As an added bonus I've noticed if you use the torch on the phone it lights up the case too in a pretty cool way. Difficult to describe!

I'm mostly interested in the camera quality and battery life. I'm not a heavy user and don't play games. If its the plus and x, then I'd go with the x considered the unicode works. There doesn't seem to be much difference but that is a good question.

bought this phone and now regretting it.... it dropped from the seat of a sofa and now the screen is flickering and now has washed out colours and even before that i was concerned with how much it was overheating when charging and when watching a long video.
not user if its just been in the last two days but customer services at Motorola is terrible, Maybe the customer services team are based in a different country and just a classic case breakdown in intercultural communication

Is anyone having an issue with overheating? Mine arrived today and overheated pretty quickly when using the camera, a lot warmer than other phones I have used. Also, the camera isn't as good as I read. Focus is on/off and photos seem a bit grainy...

I'm just letting everyone know that I got the phone, and I really liked it, but I found it had a lot of problems with 'ghost touches' so I've contacted Motorola and they're sending me some labels so I can send it back to them and get a full refund (thankfully I found this out before the 14 days were up). It seems that touch screen problems are an issue with the phone which is why I decided to get my money back rather than replace. Hope this helps someone!

Motorola have to have the worst order management system, along with mobiles.co.uk. But they definitely have the worst customer service.
I ordered the G4 plus a few weeks back for a friend. So my billing address and my friend's delivery address. Their system allows this .. so why not. The order was put on hold and I was asked to call their customer service.
The guy looked into the order and said everything was straight forward and he would escalate to the appropriate dept. His words "not rocket science - it looks like a simple order". Anyway, he was very generally rude and arrogant. A couple of days went by and no response so I call them again. Get the same guy again and I say look my order is straightforward what is going on?? His response this time "this is a complicated order .. will take time to resolve .. but should be approved for sure". He also tells me that they have unprecedented demand and the phones come direct from China and hence the delay in orders.
Another few days go by and I get an email saying my order has been cancelled due to technical difficulties!!
Anyway, this is the best deal going so I again order for my friend - this time using my delivery and billing address. Again, I get a message from them saying my order has been put on hold!! I log in to their system (it is a guessing game even finding the page to login to your account) - and the order status says 'cancelled' ... but when I click on the order number and am taken to another website - there is says 'Order Placed' - nothing about my order being held.
I again call customer service and this time atleast the guy answering has phone manners. He again pretty much tells me the same story as the first time around - this is straightforwas, I will escalate to relevant department, we have had many orders, I will get back to you;
Does it really have to be so complicated when I am ordering a 200 quid phone .. not like I am buying a car or something!

so this has what has happened so far - wonder if anyone can relate to the last point:
* tried twice unsuccessfully to order - my order was cancelled due to technical difficulties
* finally last week my order worked - with PayPal, instead of credit card, had the phone in my hand in 3-4 working days I think
* turned it on to find that, from time to time, would absolutely start doing random things on the screen -> as if I am starting up apps, and pulling down the system taskbar, etc. Clearly faulty. Have been using Android for 5+ years and used about 15 different smart phones - never had this issue.They will ofcourse refund or replace but it will take about 10 days - so I thought best to return my phone for a refund and order another one at the same time - this will be fastest.

I have the Plus model 64gb and 4gb ram and have found it excellent. The camera is very good and nothing slowing it down yet (I've had it a couple of months now). The only negatives - battery could be better, I easily get 24 hours out of it but my last couple of phones have been 48 hour batteries so this seems a bit quick. However the turbo charger it comes with makes this a bit easier to live with. Not timed how quick it charges up but 45mins-hour fully charged at a guess. I've had one random reboot, no idea the cause and hasn't done it again. A couple of times the screen has gone nuts without me touching it. A press of the power button to turn the screen off and then back on again and the issue has gone. Slightly concerning if it becomes more frequent but hopefully it won't.
There's no native email app like most Android phones so you're forced to use the Gmail one. I like the app but it keeps showing conversation view even when set to off. Someone recommended K9 Mail which I'll give a go but always reluctant to share my log in details with apps other than the built in ones I trust more.
All in all very happy with the phone and can recommend.

Any old code that you hold starting with UKUNIHOLIDAY is probably not going to work now.
The new codes starting with UKUNIMOTO are the ones that should work but continually get dismissed as not valid.

The Motorola Moto G4 XT1622 32GB is a good Android phone with 1500Mhz processor 8-core that allows run games and heavy applications.
With one SIM card slot, the Motorola Moto G4 XT1622 32GB allows download up to 150 Mbps for internet browsing, but it also depends on the carrier.

when you buy this phone there is no g'tee you will ever get the next version of Android as you have to just wait and pray motorola will choose to update and release their version for this phone.
if they do it will be at least 6 months after the main release. on one occasion a motorola Android upgrade caused my moto g to brick. it had to be replaced because it was less than a year old. if it had been older motorola wouldn't have replaced it. when upgraded several of my bought apps wouldn't work.
you also have no g'tee apps you buy will work on any android phone and a lot won't on specific hardware.
you don't get volume and phone control on your earpods. add apps at your peril as often apps interact on android and slow the os down or cause it to crash at random. .
good OS isn't it ?

If you like locked down os's with no expandable storage and constantly having to use your device the way Apple dictates rather than the way you want - all power to you.
Also, because of limited storage many ios devices struggle to be able to even download the latest software versions and often run like trash if they can. Google it if you don't agree. Android will always be better than IOS.
No NFC is just insane and such a shame as it's a great phone otherwise.
i'm all for moto g's, superb range of budget phones (and i've used each) all on stock android with very fast updates and it took me ages to buy the 3rd because the price on the 16gb remained so high (had to have it for water resistance, cheapest phone i've seen with this feature), but this seems to have only a single front speaker same as gen3 - with the larger screen this becomes very noticeable. larger battery is nice as my 3rd already lasts 2 days even with gaming and music on my daily commute, but with price and screen size this is edging more toward mid-range than budget darling, i'd rather the moto g stay as a smaller cheaper but very capable phone (guess the moto e's are taking that niche)
at least they haven't split the fanbase with 2 different specced versions, why couldn't all 3rd's have 2gb ram :disappointed:
edit - seems they have indeed, there is a plus version with same specs apart from 16mp camera and more ram. confusingly 2gb on 16gb version, 3gb on 32gb version and 4gb on 64gb version. dunno if that'll be available in UK though

Currently have z3c but i have broken it and reluctant to get a z4c due to the terribly weak glass used on the front and back (same as z3c) , using a 1mini2 now which is a solid phone but its slow even with cynogen 12.1 so on the lookout, i see nothing appealing on the market though .

Since the device charged, it isn't hot, it just seems to be when it's charging. I've read reviews that says it gets very hot whilst playing games - I don't play any mobile games so can't verify this, but I can believe it.

No, I just got a text from DHL saying my delivery was due today. Came around lunchtime, opened the back cover and it is a U.K dual sim version and even come with a charger, had both previous gen moto g and they only come with charging cable

So I was tempted to buy their own branded turbo charger from their site at £25. I'm a bit unsure about turbo charging, is this dependant on the device, or can a turbo charger quick charge anything?
I ordered the above case as i prefer a flip case.
I upgraded from lg g2 to g4 plus. Find it quite slim and light. Also find it quite fast, as my current lg g2 was having some lag. I love the fingerprint scanner.
1) Battery life is pretty woeful. I'm having to charge it 2-3 times per day (I was charging my iPhone SE once per day, twice per day under heavy usage)
2) Google has fixed 40 vulnerabilities in android - but because this isn't a nexus, motorola has to push out the update - and at the time of writing, they haven't, which means that i'm knowingly walking around with a device with a minimum of 40 vulnerabilites... very scary stuff indeed. This is a design flaw not with this phone, but with android itself
3) When apps are grouped together, notifications seem to stop working. This doesn't happen on iOS and so I can't figure out why it's not working on android.
4) When charging the phone, it gets quite hot at the back - not a terrible point, just a note. My phone (to my knowledge) hasn't overheated like some people have said
5) Phone has crashed twice in 24 hours (rebooted on first occasion and sorted itself on second occasion). I've had no crashes on my iPhone SE since I bought it on launch (might be lucky, but this is a direct comparison based on my experience)
6) It doesn't seem possible to remove the 'google search' bar at the top of the screen - this is very frustrating because if I could delete it, I could fit 4 more apps on the screen.
7) huge, huge amounts of camera lag on snapchat (very disappointed with this indeed)
:sunglasses: Because the fingerprint scanner protrudes out of the phone, it gets knocked easily, meaning you might get a vibration telling you the phone didn't recognise the fingerprint... - design flaw
9) takes absolutely forever to turn on - I compared it to my iPhone SE and I didn't time it, but it must have took a serious 20 seconds longer to boot android than iOS
good points:
1) camera is good for taking photographs and recordings
2) Fingerprint scanner is a bit faster than the iPhone
3) It's quite snappy and quick once you boot into the device
4) doesn't feel like a cheap phone (imho)
5) charges very quickly with the turbo boost. I can go from 10% to 100% in around 1 hour 10 mins
And I think that overall sums up this phone. It has some good points, but if you're coming from the iPhone SE, the boot up time is unacceptably slower, even for a cheaper phone and the security issues scare me to death. I'm going to play with the phone for another few days and if motorola don't update the phone, i'm going back to my iPhone because I refuse to walk around with a vulnerable version of android.

So I would say it comes down to cost: you do get a lot of phone for your money, but the processor seems to be the bottleneck here.
Batteries wear down when you use them, when the newness novelty wears off, these should be OK IMO.
Guess we'll see what happens when it arrives as I've othered the non plus version

I have now been playing with my Moto G4 (standard) and am trying to get used to the size. It seems well built but not much of a performance boost from my previous Moto X 2014 (2nd gen). From a benchmark they came out roughly the same but the Moto G4 did slightly better at retaining battery. The advantages of this phone are that its dual sim, has microSD (put a 64gb card into it) and as its newer will get all of the android updates for at least 2 more years. I imagine the Moto X won't be supported much longer.
From a quick google search last night I did find that motorola/Lenovo have just released the source code for the Moto G4 so this may mean root / custom roms will be possible?
You seem OK with the battery - what kind of life are you getting out of it, with what kind of usage?

It has lost 21% charge in 3.5hours with moderate use. It is projected to die around 9.30pm tonight with being fully charged at 8.30am this morning. The phone is very new though and I would imagine performance will be enhanced with future firmware updates. At least this is my experience with previous phones.

I can't decide what to do with it. No word from Motorola about the security updates - the phone still has 40 vulnerabilities on it that I am aware of. Battery life is poor (yes, I am a power user, I admit that, but there are phones with far greater battery life than this for not much more money). It's a nice phone - the touch screen definitely isn't as accurate as an iPhone - but I think i'm seeing why iPhones are priced like they are - it's because the materials and OS and security updates are quite simply, better.
Despite the G4 Plus's shortcomings, I don't hate it. But will I sell my iPhone SE and keep the G4 Plus? Or sell the G4 Plus and keep the iPhone.... ugh. Decisions, decisions!

My only comment is that on a number of occasions the screen seemed to be a bit unresponsive - I had t tap twice to select something. I assume that this was because something was running in the background taking over al CPU cycles - but I am guessing.

I'm going to be selling mine - I think android is absolute trash compared to iOS. Google even asks if you want to send some of your text messages to them for "analysis" - basically, it's a keylogger. Of course, you can say no, but it makes for a very paranoid experience. Google seem to be pushing android because it allows them to mine as much data as they want for their own profit.
Google's backup is absolutely horrendous - it doesn't back up text messages for example, so yesterday, because of the crashing and lag, I formatted my phone - lost all my text messages. I couldn't believe it, iOS has been backing ups texts since day dot. And with those 40 vulnerabilities that came out a few days ago, there has been no word from Motorola/Lenovo about when they'll be patched - will they be patched? I'm walking around with a device which can be hacked!!! Sorry, no, it has to go... Sorry folks but I couldn't return to android again after this - disappointed.
I haven't recieved my phone yet (it's been waiting to depatch for 3 days) but did own a 1st Gen Moto G and thought that was great for my needs, as a phone, calendar, occasional child distracter and for social media apps etc. I buy a phone at this price as we're virtually forced to get a new smart phone every 3 years and I don't have the cash or the will to spend more than that.

Can I ask, what do the guys who've had it here think after one week? I know in$anity has not been impressed either by the OS or by the stability / battery / fingerprint sensor, but what do others think? Does the sensor really keep getting false triggers, is that as you're reaching for the phone or while it's in your pocket? What's the battery life like on pure standby? Any other crash reports?

I bought the android because I was curious about the "open source" software on the likes of f-droid and was interested to see how "good" Marshmallow is, since they've basically copied a lot of things that make the iPhone good. The phone itself isn't too bad - but it runs android and that has to be what I base my opinion on. If android has issues, it gives us, the end users, issues.
There may be 40 issues with Android, but there's probably loads with iPhone too. I've always used Android and I've never had any issues with it.

If those are not necessarily negatives for you, then go for it.
But, I'd recommend waiting for the OnePlus 3 due out on June 14th, then decide which one to go for.

The best two mobiles I've ever owned, was a Nexus 5, and an LG G3. The reason I changed from them is because the Nexus 5 had a design flaw - dirt would get trapped in the front casing just under the screen because it wasn't sealed tight. It bugged me. The LG G3 had a VERY slippery back. Not only that, but I dropped it from waist height on a soft rug and the screen split!
My last two phones were the Moto G 3rd (found the design very boring) and the HTC Desire 626 (god awful battery life and full of bloatware.
Then I saw the Moto G4 on HUKD. A pure Android experience with moto maker. I could add a touch of colour to make this perfect for me. I ordered the 16GB/2GB Standard, in black with a ocean blue accent.
Ordered Sunday night, arrived this morning. I wasn't expecting a charger in the box but there was one, although it's white, and I hate white devices, but it's a charger so nevermind. I was also really surprised it was dual SIM. I have no use for this, however it'll come in handy for those SIMs with £5 credit on them. Can keep them plugged in incase I want anything from Google Play and need to use the credit.
There were also two SIM adapters which enabled you to change a Nano SIM to Micro. Luckily I had already ordered a Micro ready to receive this phone.
Took the factory screen protector with G4 logo on off, and straight away put a Yootech glass screen protector (Amazon - £3.99) on.
Charged it fully and it was warm, but not hot or overheating. Has had intensive use for around 2 hours and I have 84% battery left now.
The screen is gorgeous. Best screen since my LG G3. It's also really fast, no bloatware and smooth to use. It is a big handset, however I use my phone a lot for internet and youtube so it's a fair trade off. It could even potentially replace my Nexus 7 2013 tablet, however I'll keep that as it's brilliant.
The only complaint so far is the VERY large icons within Android on the homepage. I own Nova launcher but I really wanted to use everything stock, but I may have to switch Nova on as the large icons are making the phone feel like a 70 year old's handset!
The back is nice and grippy, but I am worried about that camera lens being scratched up.
Overall, it's brilliant. Well worth the £144 I paid. Shame there's no NFC on this or it would be perfect.
As for the size, My note 2 is which I've had since it was released, so that won't be an issue, however, I've got an otterbox case which makes it even bigger, so I'm looking for a slim hard case.

Camera is excellent. Probably the best 13MP I've used. It's quick at taking shots.
Paulbarker - The charger I think is just a standard charger. You have to buy the quick one.
I've installed Nova launcher now. The loss of the 'ok google' voice command is a shame though, but I don't think Google Now gives you smaller icons. I'll check.
I'm stupid and change my phone every few months - selling on then buying, selling on, then buying, but this is the first time I've been happy with everything about a handset. The last time I was happy with everything at first glance was the Moto G 3rd, and I only got rid as I felt the back was boring and saw the HTC on offer, which turned out to be shocking.
Battery is now at 74% with intensive use since I took it off charge at 3pm. Not sure why Insanity had to charge it 2-3 times in a day though.

I collected my Plus 64gb one today and am really impressed so far. I like the fact it's made of plastic as it's so lightweight. Coming from an Elephone P8000 it feels much thinner too.
Annoying the screen protector has their logo all over it, if they left it blank we could just leave it on.
I need to buy a slim case and screen protector now.
After spending a long time researching this, the Moto 3d gen and Ultra Smart 6, I am biting the bullet and going for this one. I had been hoping for the 3rd gen to come down in price but it hasn't. Seems a bit silly to get 3rd gen for £120 when I can get this for a bit more.

With a Moto G4, you're out the gate with vanilla Android - Marshmallow no less- and will have guaranteed OS updates for at least 2 years.
Really impressed with this phone so far. It's super quick and I like the gesture features where you can turn on the torch or the camera just by shaking the phone a certain way. The camera quality (Plus model) is excellent outside, low light less good but most are similar. The fingerprint reader works flawlessly. I've only registered both my thumbs once and it never fails. I quite a heavy user and the battery will easily last 24 hours, I'm not getting more than that though which I expected not to (I also have it paired to a smart watch 24 hours a day as well).
The only negatives I've found is the gallery has been replaced by Google photos which I'll get used to. The stock email application has been removed and replaced by gmail. I just hate conversation view, I've turned it off but it still remains in place. If I get an email from someone I might want to delete that one not the whole thread. Also sometimes to remind me to look at an email later I mark it as unread, it now marks the whole thread as unread which may be 20 messages over a period of years! Anyone with a solution to this I'd be very grateful. I know I could just use a third party email app but I'm always reluctant to type all my email account log in details to a third party app.
I bought a cheap clear silicon case for it for a couple of quid and looks good. The screen protector wasn't great though as was about half a millimetre too big so kept catching on all side, I took it off in the end.
I've had the basic G4 model for about 2 days and it's running really well. Much faster than my last phone, a 1st gen Moto G. I use about 50% of the battery in a day. I am still getting used to the size of the phone though. It does fit in my jeans pocket but am trying not to put it in my back pocket as that's how I killed my last phone!
Does using the turbo charger every time have a bad effect on the battery or is it fine to use it everyday? The phone does get quite hot while being charged but not so when using a normal charger.
Also, does the phone come with a File Browser? Mine didn't so i downloaded thr Asus Zen UI file browser from. Playstore.

I wanted a clear one as had chosen the colours for back and camera surround so silly to cover them up. It's not going to prevent damage from a large drop but just general scratch resistance was what I was after.
As an added bonus I've noticed if you use the torch on the phone it lights up the case too in a pretty cool way. Difficult to describe!

I ordered the G4 plus a few weeks back for a friend. So my billing address and my friend's delivery address. Their system allows this .. so why not. The order was put on hold and I was asked to call their customer service.
The guy looked into the order and said everything was straight forward and he would escalate to the appropriate dept. His words "not rocket science - it looks like a simple order". Anyway, he was very generally rude and arrogant. A couple of days went by and no response so I call them again. Get the same guy again and I say look my order is straightforward what is going on?? His response this time "this is a complicated order .. will take time to resolve .. but should be approved for sure". He also tells me that they have unprecedented demand and the phones come direct from China and hence the delay in orders.
Another few days go by and I get an email saying my order has been cancelled due to technical difficulties!!
Anyway, this is the best deal going so I again order for my friend - this time using my delivery and billing address. Again, I get a message from them saying my order has been put on hold!! I log in to their system (it is a guessing game even finding the page to login to your account) - and the order status says 'cancelled' ... but when I click on the order number and am taken to another website - there is says 'Order Placed' - nothing about my order being held.
I again call customer service and this time atleast the guy answering has phone manners. He again pretty much tells me the same story as the first time around - this is straightforwas, I will escalate to relevant department, we have had many orders, I will get back to you;

so this has what has happened so far - wonder if anyone can relate to the last point:
* tried twice unsuccessfully to order - my order was cancelled due to technical difficulties
* finally last week my order worked - with PayPal, instead of credit card, had the phone in my hand in 3-4 working days I think
* turned it on to find that, from time to time, would absolutely start doing random things on the screen -> as if I am starting up apps, and pulling down the system taskbar, etc. Clearly faulty. Have been using Android for 5+ years and used about 15 different smart phones - never had this issue.They will ofcourse refund or replace but it will take about 10 days - so I thought best to return my phone for a refund and order another one at the same time - this will be fastest.

There's no native email app like most Android phones so you're forced to use the Gmail one. I like the app but it keeps showing conversation view even when set to off. Someone recommended K9 Mail which I'll give a go but always reluctant to share my log in details with apps other than the built in ones I trust more.
All in all very happy with the phone and can recommend.
Any old code that you hold starting with UKUNIHOLIDAY is probably not going to work now.
The new codes starting with UKUNIMOTO are the ones that should work but continually get dismissed as not valid.
