Description:
As good as new. No scratches, scuffs or chips. And they come with a 12 month warranty.

OK so it's last years model and it's the 8GB version, but still a great little phone. It comes with a full 12 months warranty and is in good as new condition.

Free next day delivery or click and collect in store. No top up required.

Surely a bargain?

They are also selling brand new ones for £90.

I tried about 8 times to order it from the O2 website but it rejected my bank cards, from three different banks, and after ages on online chat they couldn't sort it so asked me to try again a few hours later.

9 Jul 16 #78
Just picked up one of these (from O2 since the vodafone 'no top-up loophole' seems to have been closed). As far as I can tell it's barely been used if at all. Got it unlocked for £1.05, so it's on three now, and I've got the official flip shell case ordered for it.

Only complaint, screen contrast isn't great.

Btw mine has no red crosses KingBruss.

I've received mine, but have a question for those with more knowledge.

Between the SIM card and the Micro SD slots are three red crosses. Are these an indication of water damage? o2 say no (they say "red crosses indicate the triple sim card slot for your phone"), but I'd appreciate your opinion.
waynester21
6 Jul 16 #76
Well I didn't bother sending mine back. I used superglue to stick the metal camera surround back down (looks a right state now) and I flashed Marshmallow onto it. Still not sure why an update wasn't available from O2.

5 Jul 16 #75
I got mine yesterday and it looks like new to me. I tried my Tescos sim and it worked without the need to unlock. I think Tesco use O2 network.
simonbrown
5 Jul 16 #74
It's not required, select 'keep current sim'. To see this option, put your browser in 'no style' page view, since vodafone hide the option.

Personally I'd rather pay £10 extra for a new one with a new battery.

edit: Actually this doesn't work anymore :disappointed:

As for moving apps to SD, as far as I know the SD can't be encrypted like the internal storage, so I wouldn't want to put anything on the SD that might reveal personal/confidential info.

I have a 1GB 2nd gen and have to agree it's insufficient. I don't use memory hogs like Facebook and just have Tapatalk, Aquamail, Gmail, Afwall+ and a VPN app running most of the time but still find I have to regularly swipe them from the recent apps screen to be able to use the app I want to use at the time without severe lag.

You don't pay the £10 top up bundle unless you chose to when you receive it. Just need to pay a couple of quid to unlock it.
waynester21
30 Jun 16 #63
Oh it is £69.99. You add the £10 bundle but all that is is a SIM card they send you with no credit on. It doesn't cost anything. They just want you to activate it by putting £10 on.

Hi OP. Shouldn't this be £79 in the title, unless you know how to get it for £69??
Picard123
30 Jun 16 #61
It's still a poor buy, particularly when you can get the noticeably better spec'd and better built Xiaomi Redmi 3 for £85.

For those that have received it, was a charger included?
jux
30 Jun 16 1 #59
OK. I had a Moto G 2nd gen before which were all 8gb/1gb and It ran with no issues at all, I restarted the thing literally 3 or 4 times in it's life. I dont just run 'tic-tac-toe' or 'the weather' as you put it, I run all of the mainstream apps just like everyone else does, and have zero issues. I'm not saying that should I add another 20 or 30 apps then I'm not going to have problems, I'm sure I would, but as it stands it really is good enough and suffers no lag or performance issues.

I can see your reasoning, but you are missing the point in that I have chosen a 1gb handset because I know that it will run everything I personally need. I wouldn't buy one for you because you're clearly a heavy user, I'm not though.

Even a blind man can see that 1gb/8gb becomes incredibly laggy over time when you use Android in the way that it's intended to be used on a smartphone. Just have a look on numerous online forums about people's real world world experiences of the phone becoming laggy or freezing as it gums up over time. Marshmellow for example, can completely kill the phone's performance.

https://www.reddit.com/r/MotoG/comments/40xvcf/moto_g_2015_us_soooo_slow_after_marshmallow_update/

Look at this by way of another example. How do you think you're going to get by with 1gb when you start running additional apps?

http://cdn.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/Screenshot_20151009-195702-635x1129.png

What are you going to do? Factory reset the phone everytime you use it? Constantly install/uninstall apps before and after every use?

1gb was fine in 2011, but you'd be absolutely mad to chose a 1gb over 2gb+ in 2016 particularly when you can get a 2gb phone for another £20-30.
waynester21
30 Jun 16 #55
Yeah I had high hopes for it as well. Also, it says the software is up-to-date yet it's on 5.1.1. According to Motorola the Marshmallow update was pushed to O2 Moto 3rd Gen phones in February.

jux
30 Jun 16 #53
Oh no that's bad luck :disappointed: I don't know about the red x symbols sorry. You're supposed to be getting a handset in new condition, I'm sure you will have no problems getting it swapped. Good luck.
waynester21
30 Jun 16 #52
OK I just received this phone but I'm going to be sending it back. The camera surround (metal strip) is peeling away from the body. Also, I can't find any info on the internet but it's got 3 red "X" symbols in between the SIM and SD card slots. Does this mean it's water damaged?
jux
30 Jun 16 #51
It could be yes, but it's battery is rather poor so for me the better battery of the Moto G won out. Horses for courses

The Huawei P8 Lite can be had for around this price from CPW (PAYG upgrade) - it has 2GB RAM and 16GB - might be a better buy?
Picard123
30 Jun 16 #48
You must be playing Tetris or some basic tic-tac-toe tyype game because everyone knows that this phone spec is comical.
jux
30 Jun 16 1 #47
Sorry but what nonsense. You have to have serious amount of apps running to affect performance, I have all the usual suspect apps running and I'm using it for web browsing and a bit of gaming, I haven't had any lag or slowdown whatsoever and I'm running MM. £70 wasted this is not.
jux
30 Jun 16 #46

waynester21
30 Jun 16 #44
You should never use those task killing apps on Android. The only reason you're using so much RAM is so the apps are already in memory so load up quicker. Android is quite good at using RAM on devices with 1GB+ RAM. Remember - unused RAM is wasted RAM.
Shamish
30 Jun 16 #43
I've ordered to collect from store. Ordered last night does anybody know when it's likely this will be available from? Thanks
Picard123
30 Jun 16 #42
It's the ram which is the major problem. Android is actually very inefficient with it's ram usage and doesn't clear memory properly. Install all the apps that you want to install and which you think you'll use eg. Facebook/Messenger, Email, Google Maps Navigation, BBC iPlayer, YouTube etc, and the phone will just grind to a halt with use over time. I have a 3gb phone with everything I need installed. I run a few apps and I regularly reach over 1gb of ram usage NOT including the OS. So I'm regularly reaching over 2gb of total ram usage. On a 2gb phone I'd have to be regularly using task and apps killers to clear memory. A 1gb phone would be impossible.

I think that's too harsh a take on this phone (and similar phones) running Android 6 (such as the Moto E2). With adoptable storage ( http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/135716-how-to-use-adoptable-storage-on-android-6-0-marshmallow ) some apps start using the microsd card to store some of their data by default. More modern apps start putting some of their data there (specifically their obb files https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opaque_binary_blob ), with app updates keeping the data there, and you can also set photos and music to be stored there too. You have 8GB of storage on the phone and after deducting about 3.5GB for the Android OS, and further space for working, there is a bit over 2GB for apps. Apps vary in how much of their data they store on the card, but larger, more modern apps can store most of their data on the card. This might allow an extra 2/3GB of extra space for apps, and with photos and music off-card, it might make it viable. That said, the Moto G 4th gen is well reviewed ( http://www.trustedreviews.com/motorola-moto-g-review ), and costs 'only' 159.99 ( http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/moto-g-4th-gen-16gb-sim-free-black-white-with-2yr-guarantee-159-99-delivered-john-2462864 ).

Picard123
29 Jun 16 #38
It's been said a million times but its worth saying again....

1gb/8gb is a waste of time on Android.

£70 doesn't represent a saving, it's a waste of £70 because the phone is obsolete unless all you want to do is make phone calls and occasionally check the weather forecast.

If an app supported being moved to the SD card in earlier versions of Android then it will install to the SD card in Marshmallow, provided you're using the SD card as internal storage. Also, when apps are installed to SD card and you create files using those apps e.g. photo edits then those files you create get stored to SD card. I'm really impressed with the OS so far.

They are most likely customer returns. Open box, take phone out, don't like it, return to box, send back. I would throw the same thing back at you and say, why on earth would you pay an £10 extra for the same phone in the same condition and buy it from the worst company ever?

Edit: OOS at Vodafone, it's been like that for at least the week that I have spent looking for one.

Oh man :disappointed: I wouldn't mind buying a new one for £90 as long as I don't need a top up. Rather buy one from O2 than Vodafone. The staff look down their noses at customers in that shop :disappointed:
jux
29 Jun 16 1 #4
Choose your top up bundle and add to basket, you are not charged for the bundle. If you choose a £10 bundle then you have to top up by £10 to activate it, if you don't want it or are on another network just don't top up.

I'm sure someone can explain it better than me
