You could probably also power it by potato power as demonstrated by this picture showing 3 potatoes generating 22.3012volts, easily powering this drill. Simply put a carrot in series to reduce volts down to 18v dc. Nice and eco as well, recycle the batteries by making them into dinner.

I can't be 100% sure but I'm gonna say yes*, sure why not? - probably work if you whittle down 12aaa batteries and ram them into the base.

Well these copy batteries have really dropped in price recently.

this ones just over £16 paid £11 not got time to look on ebay may be cheaper on there still.
I'm sure they most likely are, but I do question their pricings - for a start, pretty much everything I looked at seemed overpriced, but even if you think that's subjective, it's undeniably stupid to charge £51.09 per battery (Makita BL1830) when buying 6 (SIX) of them, and charge £49.99 per battery when buying JUST 2 (TWO) of the same model.
So by buying 3 times more of these pricy things, you get a "discount" of NEGATIVE £6.57! (For those mathematically challenged, you pay £6.57 MORE).

Can you give a link for 3Ah batts for that price please? all I can see is 1.5Ah from £12 and up.... craftily they list them as suitable replacements for BL1830, BL1840 etc so give the impression they might be 3Ah.

3ah batteries readily available on ebay and amazon for about £11 not genuine but work almost as well i have them as well as one genuine.

For those that missed out on the FFX offer the DHP456Z (body only) is available on via Amazon seller "The Toolden" for £43.99 with free delivery. Slightly more expensive than the original FFX £39.00 offer, but definitely less expensive than the £100+ price it is now on FFX !

Wow, pleased it I got in early on that offer, just had my dispatch notification from FFS.
I've teamed the bare unit up with a 3.0Ah battery, and charger (not the 22 min quick charge one) and a case, all for under £100, happy days. I will just need to keep a watch out now for a second 3.0Ah or 4.0Ah LXT battery and that's me sorted. :smirk:

But all the juice would be gone. Better of as a snack - crisps
Thanks xigent I have gone for the DHP456Z instead. as you say it's got more torque, it's brushless and has a work light as well, so a lot more going for it, for only a few pounds more? Result !

Not a bad find! - if you want a wrist breaking 91Nm get the 458 model, although usually a lot more expensive - well from about £60 on ebay
I have this and compared to the old 8391 Makita that is about 40Nm it's amazing how well it drills into tough brickwork

Why are they selling the drill body only?
What's happened to all the batteries?
Surely nobody normally buys/sells a drill without a battery.
I just don't get it.

If you're a full time chippy / tradesman, it makes sense that you can buy battery power tool bodies, as you may have already have a set of batteries and charger from another tool, this saves buying another full set, as batteries are the most expensive part of the kit this way you can save a lot of money.

Yes if you've already invested in the LXT battery system then you might as well buy the tool without the battery and swap batteries as you use the tool you need. As these batteries charge up in about 22-30 mins you can easily get away with 1 or 2 batteries to cater for maybe 6 power tools or whatnot.

I have an LXT lawn mower, hedge trimmer, reciprocating saw, drill, impact driver, vacuum. There are only so many batteries I need, one (two for the lawn mower) for each item is overkill.
As for this item I think it's an absolute bargain personally, heat added.

I found this blog a useful breakdown of what the Makita LXT drill models specs are, and what the drills are most suited to be used for. Light, Trade, Heavy etc.
might go well with the 3x 3.0ah makita batteries ive got hanging around, or might just sell the batteries

You can get a standard charger (not a 22min fast charger) a 3.0Ah battery and a Makita combi drill case all for just over £55 from EBay ! I know as I just brought them all.

You should get the required voltage drop by using four 50M extension leads between the batteries and the drill, job done.

How about using a dimmer switch.

we would probably just need some sort of integrated circuit to drop the voltage down, job done

correct but what about voltage? 2 in serial will make up 24v, how do we take off the non needed 6v?? Also, can you recommend a good trolley to take them around?? Once someone brainy will give me the right answer, I will proceed voting for what it looks like an excellent deal

16 Jun 16#10
you right, I will need serial and parallel connection then, capacity is also important

can I use 3v lithium watch batteries in parallel to power it?? then I might vote

Maverick77 to neroneuk
16 Jun 161#7
If memory serves correct you need to connect in serial to increase voltage, 6 batteries should do it but don't expect it to last long before the batteries drain.

OK, someone will ask this so I'll repeat what's above - this is for a Makita BHP453 drill body, no battery or charger is supplied so it won't work unless you already have those items. Ideal for replacing your worn out drill or to compliment your existing 18volt LXT range of products. 3 year warranty if you register with Makita within 30 days of purchase. UK Tool Mart seem a decent bunch when I've used them before.
