Just popped into my local branch of Farmfoods today and noticed this deal for Lloyd Grossman pasta sauce, which is currently on offer in other supermarkets for a pound. I thought this was a good deal to post. The ticketing indicates that it maybe national, check your local branch. They have it in three varieties, bolognese, tomato & basil and chilli pasta. I got four as I like these.

good price. Poor old Lloyd. his brand never recovered from the botulism in his curry sauces.

To be fair, it turned out the sauce was almost certainly not the source of the poisoning.

yes it did. the final report stated that the sauce eaten was contaminated. but it was an isolated incident to just that solitary jar and none could be found in any more. like I said, poor Lloyd as the brand has failed to recover from having it's name in the news for the wrong reasons.

Don't normally like jars of pasta sauce, but love these (especially the chilli one (was it chilli and bacon)).

Yes, you're right, but the actual product from the factory, i.e. the production facility or methods were not at fault. The report speculated that the contamination occurred after it had left the factory.
When buying jars, always check the safety buttons on the caps. If the seal has been broken, any bacteria (such as c. botulinum) present in the outside world can contaminate the contents and multiply uncontrollably due to the sterile conditions. It's the same reason you should never store foods in opened cans.
