The missus birthday is coming up and I have been looking for a cheap laptop with an SSD in. This fits the bill perfectly, and should suit her just fine for a few years.

Having been looking for this laptop in particular I can tell you the cheapest other retailer I could find was Tesco (£279). With free delivery, this is a bit of a steal.
Still a good little laptop with the SSD, Debenhams seem to be good retailer, they might delivery quicker for less.

is this laptop any good?

That depends on what you are planning to use it for, for me it would be awful (won't play games) but for the missus it is perfect (a bit of web browsing and emails / job applications / shopping).
Some shoppers might want a laptop which ditches the DVD drive to reduce the 2.2 kg mass, and perhaps have support for 802.11ac but otherwise a perfectly good pick.
I'd be wary that they might not have stock of these, going by the recent Laptops Direct deal I posted for a cheap Dell desktop that they're cancelling orders for.

Oh dear, it might be worth paying more to get it from somewhere else then. I would be in the dog house if it didn't arrive.
That actually is the lower spec and available at many places for about that price. If you are thinking about losing the SSD (which is probably the single largest upgrade on performance for once piece of hardware) then I would recommend this one:
Yes, although having owned an Asus laptop I am not sure I would ever force that on somebody again.

Hi guys

Good to know.... can you advise if you've ever had any Dell Vostro 3900's i5 desktops model 1K6CF in stock ever? I've tried to buy one in Feb and subsequent deals I've posted for the same item from you results in cancelled orders. You've had it showing in stock for months but no one ever seems to be able to buy them. I understand you may not want to answer this tricky question but I've asked it now.

I would pay about £30 more and go for the i5 version. Looks a niced laptop on various youtube reviews. Some comments say the owners regret buying it. Generally, it looks a good basic laptop.

"Take it easy on me - first deal and all."
It's either a deal or it isn't, whether it's your first or last doesn't matter. On my first deal I said flame me to death. Everyone should say now It's my first deal, roast me to death.
Anyway this is a fine deal if you dont need an i5 otherwise pay £43 more and get the HP 250 i5 deal that was listed earlier today.

Is there lots of difference between i3 and i5? I just want it for downloading photos, email, browsing and occasional word documents

i3 should be more than enough for general browsing / document editing

i5 is more for gaming and other intensive tasks. This laptop will easily do all those tasks you want.

Pros:
Decent CPU, enough for browsing, work, a bit of youtube or whatever
Quite durable, and professional looking
4GB RAM should be able to complete basic multitasks (e.g. multiple web browsers) fine
SSD means faster boot times and generally faster, more safely stored content
Windows 10 is fantastic (imo)
Nice size screen
Upgradeable storage via SD
Good battery life
Cons:
It's quite chunky and thick, looks a little dull to me
It will not be able to cope with anything more than light, low res gaming (issue for some, not all)
It won't be superfast, just average
The screen is below par at 1366x768, lets be honest, full HD is not much to expect these days, 250 quid isn't super cheap its just cheap
RAM is pretty standard speed, DDR3 1600
Sound is reported as muffled in several reviews, perhaps headphones or speakers required for the long term?
I tried to be as fair as possible? Seems a decent deal imo, its been this price before, there were HUKD posts on it, I would personally pay the couple quid more and get it away from LaptopsDirect just in case they say 'in stock' then cancel

Very nice laptop for the money (you never get an SSD and an 'i' Intel chip for £250). We have a few in use as staff computers at school (I'm the IT guy) and they're well built, solid computers with a good touchpad (a feat that seems increasingly rare in non-Mac notebooks of any price). Definitely a good buy for everyday computing.
I did see some i5 models around for not much more though. Buying one of those should future proof you a little better.
