Had Hive installed about 2 years ago - superb system. No issues installing and no drop-outs. Allows command of your boiler using the thermostat, a webpage, a smartphone app and even by text. Great to overide your programmed schedule if you're going to be home late or early, or even just adjust the temperature half a degree and not have to get off the sofa! Additional lighting and security products can also be added to the system.

Got mine from Amazon and it's been a right PITA to install. According to hive support they have to remotely flash the receiver as it's software version is older than that of the thermostat. At this point, spending the money on getting an installer in would have been cheaper.

These are great and all, but my existing Honeywell one is totally programmable so I don't have to switch on the heating from my smartphone, I set which temperatures at which times and it all just works automatically, I don't have to do anything really and it was a fraction of the price. So I don't really see the advantage of these unless you often have to change your program remotely?

Yes, the thermostat is an excellent piece of kit that is well designed any easy to use. The display is very clear and it's very intuitive to use.
It's battery operated so it can go any where in your house as opposed to it being stuck in some cold hall while you swelter in the living room.
I've been lazy and haven't attached it to the wall but just use it as a mobile thermostat like my old two part one. I.e. Take it upstairs at night - downstairs during the day.

Excellent piece of kit, so much more accurate control over your heating system.
A very typical system in a modern house (like mine) is a boiler, with a controller on the wall nearby, which you programme to turn your heating/hot water on and off. A main thermostat, quite often in the hall- square, white with a dial.
The receiver replaces your old controller- my one was pretty current, so had a common interface backplate, which the new receiver just clicks onto.
The hub connects to your broadband router, which will then let everything talk to each other, and provide control via the app if you are away from home.
The shiny new thermostat replaces the one in the hall- it has to be disconnected, and this is where I made changes to my wiring, and made everything safe.
The new Hive fits onto the existing plasterboard box, and is powered by the batteries supplied.
Download software onto PC or mobile, and set up your required on and off times with temps- very easy to do, unlike my old Drayton controller.
All of the above relates to my install, yours obviously may differ, but I hope this clarifies what does what for some of you.
Don't attempt the electrics unless you are confident, but the actual existing thermostat wiring change should take a sparky 5 mins. And please don't ask how I did mine, I'm not qualified to advise ;-)
£199 for heating & HW installed (£125 on its own) or £118.99 for heating only.
Got one of these last year, really pleased with it

I was a bit cynical when I first installed hive but I've got to say that I'm quite impressed.
I've got 3 separate heating zones and it all just works. The system has been very stable as well, only one reset nearly a year (only had 1 zone to start with).
The support has been really good as well

Hive/ nest are both great, but essentially they give you ability to adjust or turn your heating on/off via an app on your phone. They also let you program the heating schedule better than most thermostats. Plus they both look great lol

The receiver connects to the boiler, and it draws its mains from that. The receiver talks to the hub, which is connected to mains & Lan/wifi. The thermostat or app, then communicate to the receiver via the hub

From memory the receiver needs to be connected to the mains and a cable (twin) to the boiler and pick up a wifi signal.
It doesn't actually have to be near the boiler but it does make it easier assuming power and wifi are available.

In case it isn't clear to you yet, in the cold light of day your comment seems pointless - a bit like posting to an android phone thread saying "if this is like an iPhone it's great!"
The Nest is great (IMHO), but that doesn't make the Hive great, as they are competitors - not companion products.
Seems a good price, heat added

17 Jun 16#21
Yes, an existing wireless thermostat will have a receiver wired to the boiler, you've just got to replace it with the hive receiver. The hive is just another type of wireless thermostat really, with the benefit of it being Internet enabled.
Is there a list of compatible back plates? Nothing on the install manual.

It depends on your current setup really. I had a wireless thermostat already in place with its own reciever right next to the boiler, so was just a case of swapping the recievers over. If you have a wired thermostat currently, then the reciever needs to replace this thermostat, sited either where it is now, or by tracing tracing/cutting the cable back so you can site it nicely out the way near the boiler. Ultimately it just requires a basic understanding of electrics & wiring diagrams. If you unsure about it, get an electrician in, its only an hours job at max.

I love my Hive - just for the pure control (and knowledge of inside temperature whilst away). It looks very neat too.
