Went with the Halfords Pro advance 28 piece set for £25.50
It was the deep sockets that made me go for it, the extra £8 was worth it, a far better quality case too

Only thing put me off the Bahco is they have no deep sockets like the Halfords advance Pro sets!

I've always had my tools supplied to me so can't comment on price but the bacho 1/4 and 1/2 inch drives sets are great. Mine are both 9 years old now with regular industrial use and they're still spot on.

This or the 28 piece with 10 deep sockets for £25.50
Or a Bahco for £32.99 with a proper breaker bar for stubborn nuts

So what is better 3/8 or 1/4? Or more common for general diy/car needs?

I would only use a 3/8" drive for light work on cars and motorbikes. You really want 1/2" drive which will cover all the bases.

Of those two, go for 3/8" for general use. This should be ok up to a 12mm bolt, which is a 19mm socket. If you're considering use on cars, then for most things 3/8" will still be ok, but if you get a bit more enthusiastic, there are some things which you would need to go to 1/2".
In short, if you want to keep to one size, light use (bicycles etc) 1/4", general use 3/8", more serious car use 1/2". If you're happy to have two sizes go for 1/4" for small size and 1/2" for strength.

1/4 is not much use for general mechanical work - the sockets will go up to only probably 13mm and you can't apply as much torque through a 1/4" drive.

What's the difference between the 1/4" set and the 3/8" set... Bit a newbie question.... As I see the 1/4" set has 6 point rather than 12...

It's the size of the drive.

It's the size of the square drive across flats.

Good price, nearly bought but noticed they are 12 point. A lot of the bolts I've had to get to under my car have been in danger of rounding off using 12 point sockets.

True, got this set, but rarely use it because of that :disappointed:

Great product, well made, great size to do most DIY jobs on the car. 3/8" is the most versatile socket set that you could have! Initially was worried about the sockets not being hexagonal, but on service parts (oil sump plug, oil filter) they are strong and well built that stripping nuts wasn't as issue

Great tools and never had any hassle when taking broken tools back unlike snap on or britool in the past...

Is this any better than the Bahco S330 34 piece socket set ? Think the Bahco one is 6 point (though I may be wrong)

In a nutshell, no. The Bahco s330 3/8 set are 6 point wall drive and the bahco ratchets are considered better quality than the halfords ones. That being said the bahco set is twice the price of this one. This halfords set is very good value for money.

I don't even know why they make sockets that are 12 sided. They are certainly no good for brake calliper bolts and similar that are always mega tight and easy to strip. You would also think that a 6 sided socket would be cheaper to produce.

Picked up 200 set for £103 earlier when they had a flash sale and then c&c with BC 10% discount.
