You could walk about with it. The pocket might be the problem if gps can't get through trousers... I dont know about that. Should be Ok though.

this might be a silly question but I'll ask anyway. does this need to go on a bike or could I just walk about with it in my pocket.

Technically you could but I don't think this supports any walking/running activities so it would count everything as a slow cycle, it's not an item I would choose for non-cycling activities.
