If like me you have have young children, chances are you get through a fair amount of Calpol/Nurofen. I normally try to buy the unbranded versions and larger sizes to keep the costs down - however I noticed today instore at Wilko they do Fenpaed brand version for just 95p (100ml) which is considerably cheaper than the branded versions which normally retails for £3-£4 for equivalent size.
It seems to be out of stock online but plenty of both the ibuprofen & paracetamol in my local store.
Fenpaed Ibuprofen 100mg/5ml Oral Suspension 100ml gives effective relief from aches, pains and fever in babies and children aged 3 months and over.
The strawberry flavoured oral suspension soothes away the pain from teething and toothaches, sore throats, headache and minor aches and sprains.
Warning:
Keep all medicines out of sight and reach of children. Read instructions before use. Each 5ml contains 100mg Ibuprofen. Not suitable for children under 3 months.

Yes you can but some prefer not to be a drain on NHS funding and resources in effort to prolong its availability.

Am I misunderstanding or would you really book a GP appointment just to get some free basic medicine? Chemists have to be part of the minor ailments scheme and give things out at their discretion, so usually you have to bring a sick/symptomatic child to a pharmacist not just go stock up at your convenience.
The generic stuff is barely a couple of pounds and is practically an essential. It'll probably cost 10 times that to get a GP to give it for "free".

Very true, when we've had a wee one at the quacks for genuine reasons, they have advised minor ailments. We also go straight to the pharmacy when we feel some is required. I think you'll find getting a £1 bottle of painkiller for a kid is nothing compared to the ridiculous wastage elsewhere. Maybe if every government body sources purchases as well as HUKD members, we'd all be quids in. We use minor ailments as and when required, whilst paying way more than our due in National Insurance. As long as people don't use it as an, "oh that will come in handy" source. Instead going when it is required is perfectly acceptable. However no one should book a GP appointment just to save £1.

Costs NHS approx 80 million a year on paracetamol prescriptions, just buy it everyone can afford it adults cost about 25p a pack and kids £1 a bottle from the likes of home n bargain etc

It is actually paid for my the British tax payer, yes that does include you, but wouldn't that be better spent on funding medication /operations /nurses/ and doctors in the event of you or your child, God forbid, ever having a more serious illness. I am on a very tight budget, but would prefer to spend the £1 and not abuse the system.

Agree. My GP offers both to us on free prescription for our little mite, but I and my other half say no. They're not expensive and the NHS is stretched enough as it is. Having worked in the US, I have come to appreciate our NHS even more.

We have had NHS "Calpol" and Calprofen" added to prescriptions for other medications by helpful doctors (usually women), but I wouldnt dream of going JUST to get it free.
FYI, you can get an amazing range of things on prescription if it is needed medically; we totally confused our local pharmacy by turning up with a prescription for silk underwear!!
(Our daughter was having allergic skin reactions to everything - including unbleached cotton, after developing a severe egg allergy at age 18 months)
We had already spent £150 on one set of baby grow + leggings + vest to prove its effectiveness before the doctors would prescribe it though.
