The 100 piece set does not have 10mm drill pieces.

I use the smaller ones for pilot holes to get a more precisely located hole. Then follow up with the sds, especially with plastered walls.

I was wondering who needs all those drill bits that come in sets, half dont get used and cheap ones break then your left with an odd set.

I like your way of thinking, better drill bits for the jobs you need in hand and not what you might need.

Probably to make you buy a 7mm bit separately, or another set when you realise it's annoying to carry around a set + a spare drill bit.

Personally I think masonry sets are a bit pointless (double pun?), who's ever used a 4mm or 5mm masonry bit? I'd buy 2 x 6mm (red plugs), 2 x 7mm (brown plugs), 1 x 8mm (blue plugs) and 1 x 10mm bit (grey plug).

Grab a multi pack of Uno wall plugs that include those 4 sizes. Now you've got a plug + drill bit for every screw size. Job done.

I pretty much use the 5,6 and 8 sizes exclusively now since switching to Fischer wall plugs. Their SX range for hard masonry are really well designed, and their UX range for everything else are also very versatile. Much more expensive though!!

Depends what you mean by "cheap" but I've been using 2 of these (one as a drill, one as a screwdriver) for over 7 years since they came out (the 1st version - this is the 2nd series). Tough and reliable enough for home DIY use - I used them to prep the house for selling and in the new house a tonne after moving & still doing so. There's a reason it's Amazons number 1 best seller. Still no problems & thoroughly recommend them. Not the "professional" blue range but do a good job in most situations around the home.

One of the TV shopping channels now and again sells diamond tip drill set for about £35
with a life time guarantee . The Demo shows drilling into anvils . You can also drill through steel, brick, and wood in layers at the same time, without changing to separate drill bits for each .

Although these sets at first seem expensive , in the long run they are cheap . The amount of drills you go through on conventional types ? As anyone who has tried to put up a curtain rail and had to drill into a lintel will know !

​ok so did some research on HSS as I have no clue either:

"High speed steel (HSS) is a form of tool steel; HSS bits are hard, and much more resistant to heat than high carbon steel. They can be used to drill metal, hardwood, and most other materials at greater cutting speeds than carbon steel bits, and have largely replaced carbon steels."

I'd assume that the 100 piece are a lower quality steel than what you get in these packs.

Having read through the comments for the 100 piece on screw fix aswll, I get the impression that their a decent option for your average DYI-er/low usage but not for serious graft.

Mega deal, just ordered for collection. Worth it just for those jobs you don't want to use your expensive drill bits for.
