Could I use this, with an adapter as permanent storage in my laptop? Or is that not suitable?

Don't know about installing things on it... But documents sure. Be aware normal hard drive speeds are about 100mb read, this is half that and likely the same for write speeds.

You could indeed. If you have an SD card slot though, rarely would the card go all in without sticking out. I'd personally go for a more robust USB flash drive solution at a few quid more:
