Free Range.... right. I'm not going to vote this cold as that would be against the spirit of the site, but anyone who buys these with a clear conscience on the basis that theyre 'free range' is a foo

You seem to know you're egg regulations. Are you a producer, packer or someone in authority to be able to say what you say?

Great deal ! The funny thing is that even though it clearly states that Maximum 4 packs per customer, people at my local Iceland ( cough* cough* Leyton ) store are still attempting to buy 6,7,8,9,and some 10 packs at a time .

Who did then?
Either he made it up, or he got it from somewhere/someone else. If it really is the latter as you suggest, I'd like to know where/who he got it from.

"Free range" has always been used for the staff and owner, as "barn" egg has always been used for the house nearby where the owner or staff stayed while tendering to the chickens.

living close to a 24,000 bird ' free range ' egg production unit I can confirm the birds are kept in very poor conditions,
they would be better off caged..... and the eggs are horrible.
get them from a local small holding if you can

These are 8.3p per egg. I could eat three of these for roughly the price of one of yours. Sounds like a hot deal to me.
peter1223
15 Jun 163#40
Of course they do, they're bred and kept alive entirely for human use. The eggs are still delicious and nutritious. If your moral standards don't allow you to enjoy them that's fine, but don't imagine that the rest of us are somehow obliged to live by the standards that you've made up.

The Co-op sells local free range eggs from a farm with small flocks, so I buy those or go for organic which has higher welfare standards. Both options are about 23p per egg, so affordable.

I think the red colored character string marked on an individual egg says whether its free range or not(1 for free range and 3 for caged).

Stokeej, my memory must be failing me lol...you're correct it was a £1:laughing:
They're probably not able to sell them at that price. It will be a loss leader designed to increase footfall and the chance you will buy other items when you pop in. The price you pay will likely have no impact on the price the farmer gets or their welfare.

Not much to explain here.. 'Free Range' in this context is a farce, theyre not even close to free range. This applies to most 'free range' eggs. The pathetic conditions you need to adhere to in order to label eggs as free range is a joke. My point was that if youre able to sell eggs @ 50p for 6 then youre clearly not spending enough to ensure the welfare of your hens.

They don't say if the eggs are free range or not? If they were, I am sure they would sing about it on the label. If they are caged eggs - then I wouldn't touch them if they were free.
