Yes you do have to inflate. The only way I found this out is from the reviews as it doesn't really state it anywhere else.

You can get these in the seaside stores that sell inflatable dolphins and the like, great for falling asleep while floating in the Ocean.

Took one of these camping for a number of years. Brilliant bit of kit. Our 2 kids spent hours drawing, playing on Nintendo DS's and arguing on this whilst it continually rained outside. Ah, happy days.
