You ought to have seen the queue at the fish & chop down Salt burn pier at the last bank holiday. It was crazy long, right past the car park!

I agree with all that, Aleem. I've never much liked the towns of Stockton, Middlesbrough, Hartlepool and so on, but the surrounding countryside is fantastic. The best bit is that because it's not a touristy area nowhere gets too busy. Places like Devon and Cornwall are nice looking but get ridiculously busy. The beach at Saltburn is better than most others around the country but never gets overcrowded. I'm looking forward to going for a walk along it when I'm next in the North East in a feww weeks.

Hartburn is a pleasant place to live, but I'm not saying it's as nice as the best parts of London.
A place is what you make of it, with the people you care aboout. My southern friends love it here, with the great coast line within half an hour drive and the same withe the moors, and lake district not that far away.
My dad worked at Head Wrightson.

Possibly handy for Tall Trees nightclub if that place still exists! And Croft racing circuit too.

I have stayed here and certainly would not recommend it. You do not stay in the mill. the rooms are damp smelling and our bed was propped up on off cuts of wood.

Not sure I can think of any lovely parts of Stockton. A few of historic interest maybe, but I struggle with the lovely bit. I was born there and lived there for years. I also lived in London for a while. The worst bits of London are certainly worse than the worst bits of Stockton, but the best bits are a lot better than the best bits of Stockton. Incidentally, my granddad used to row a ferry boat across the river where the Princess of Wales Bridge now is. Across the South side used to be Head Wrightsons. I don't think he'd recognise it if he were still here.

Yarm is pleasant, Stockton no more horrible than London, Manchester, Newcastle; some lovely parts and some not so lovely parts. A few in between parts too

In the olden days, I think the district of Cleveland was part of North Yorkshire, I have an old map at home somewhere with the old County borders and so on. Stockton is horrible, but Yarm is a beautiful little village.

Technically Yarm is deemed to be part of North Yorkshire for ceremonial purposes.
Oh and Ingleby Barwick and Stockton are as well. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Yorkshire

I have. Once and once only. That was enough for me. If I was going to recommend an area for people to base themselves, it wouldn't be there. Either down into the Dales or further south in the Moors but not right up there. York's a bit spendy so I wouldn't necessarily be saying people should base themselves in the city itself. Each to their own .

This place is just round the corner from me. It is a well run B & B and yes the hot tub is communal. Its literally a 1 minute walk to the nearest pub The Fox Covert. Yarm is a lovely place especially the High Street. However this is a good 5-10 minute drive to Yarm and is actually just on the edge of Ingleby Berwick (largest private housing estate in Europe). It's a good base from which to explore North Yorkshire by car but, it's not set in the middle of nowhere and has the estate one side with a school the other.
