You would buy a sound system that supports digital inputs.

Hmm pair this with the Chromecast deal from yesterday times three and I might have enough kit to do my multi-room setup

Seems pointless, it'd only be stereo.

reviews have put me off buying these, a lot of people mention them buzzing quite loudly

I have these, they are cheap and cheerful. remote feels quite cheap and flimsy and there is a mild constant humming sound that comes from the sub when its on. I would agree with a review from ebuyer and say these are good for budget 5.1 gaming on the pc, not so good for people who want to appreciate their music.

I had one of these to connect to my TV optical out and PS3 optical out:
ESYNiC Digital Audio Decoder to Analog 5.1 Converter - Support Digital Optical Coaxial DTS AC3 Dolby Signal and Stereo(R/L) Audio Signal into 5.1 / 2.1 Analog Output

I have 2 sets of these, bought about 5 years ago. I'm quite happy with them although there is definitely a buzzing sound, even when they are put into standby. That is their major drawback, I would say. I also find them quite fiddly to configure at higher volumes to get good sound (although I'm no audiophile) - the sound might be fine at a lower volume, but when you turn it up suddenly there's too much treble or bass, etc.
Anyway, bottom line is that for £30 I would say you could do a lot worse!

I had a similar issue with the buzzing noise and power draw when in standby, you can fix it by getting an IR wireless plug which is operated by any IR remote control, just sync the plug with 1 of the buttons on the remote control used for the surround system or your TV remote. I use the setup alot more now I can switch it on/off from a remote.
I also have the audio converter arjunvijay mentions...I also have a mess of wires like above :P
thanks OP - should hopefully be better than my crappy philips 5:1 that constantly hiss 'Loud'. Glad its free delivery and paid with Paypal - so if all goes wrong i'll simply return. My current Philip PC400 are way overdue a change (known hissing problem on these but overall sound is loud and good)

Great price but don't expect much.. They look good but sound poor.
