I thought I would try using 2560*1440 to get around the 30HZ at 4K issue but when I select it it stays and 30HZ and won't let me pick anything else. The product page does specifically state it can do 60HZ at 2560*1440 and have heard other people have used it.

I am using Windows 10 and connected via the full size display port. If anyone else got one of these and knows how to do it please let me know.

Monitor arrived six days ago though as I had to move my room around to accommodate it (I kept my two older monitors so now have a cool 3 screen set up  ) I haven't actually had that much time on it and haven't been able to test it with 4k video yet or 4k gaming yet but have had some time using it for general browsing/work/productivity type stuff.

I have to say I have very mixed feelings on the monitor. It is very easy to set up indeed. Some complain about the stand but I found it easy and could have done it fine without the manual. It's not the strongest but I didn't find it flimsy or overly wobbly as others did. The computer picked up the monitor just fine (using the full size display port connection) and didn't need the drivers (Windows 10).

At first I was impressed that though smaller than on my previous 1200P monitor, I could still see everything fine but diving into the settings I saw that while the monitor had correctly set the 4k resolution, it automatically increased the scaling to 150%. At 100% I doubt I could use the monitor, still 150% is fine as it's still more screen space than the 1200P screen it replaced.

Typically though it produced a nice colourful image, it came with stupidly bright eye searing contrast and brightness setting like most monitors do. I turned them down pretty much immediately and got a more natural image though it still needs adjustment as the colour has lost some of its impact.

The real bugbear I have though is it just feels 'slow' moving the mouse cursor and it doesn’t feel as ‘connected’ to my actual mouse movement as it did on the old monitor. It could be the 30hz or simply that I have to cover more desktop now or most likely a combination of the two? But unfortunately it feels unusual and definitely takes some getting used to, though I am still hopeful that I can as I like the general image quality and being able to have two, possibly three full sized windows/web pages open side by side is brilliant.

Another oddity is sometimes when scrolling down a web page, the screen goes all white very briefly (for about ½ second) then appears normally as if it is struggling to keep up with the speed of the motion, it is only occasional but very distracting when it does happen and points towards further issues with the panel's motion handling. Something I'll have to keep an eye on for sure.

Despite all that, overall, I would still have to say I think it is good for it’s price, simply because there is nothing even close to this specification for £107, you would be lucky to get a 24” 1080P for this money and despite its faults I’d take the Viewsonic any day, but as I suspected, it’s by no means perfect either……

18 May 16 #55
Hmmmn, does the turnip have HDMI?
freakstyler
16 May 16 #54
I'd rather waste £100 on a giant Turnip than on one of these, even if it was £100 for a new sealed unit I wouldn't bother. Seems these have a high failure rate, pretty much guaranteed going by the reviews from people who are one their third replacement, way too much hassle especially for one that's already had one unhappy owner. If issues arise further down the line and you're offloaded onto Repairtech for support (assuming Viewsonic still use them for repairs) then be prepared for the run around.

20-23rd May, though that is probably because I picked no rush delivery for the kindle credit and to give me a bit of breathing room to cancel in case I have second thoughts but I really don't think I will as for all it's (seemingly many) problems, it;s the only chance of getting this kind of resolution at this price....

Are you just trying to be argumentative? I just agreed with you, I know that replacement is never guaranteed but at the very least, for the first 12 months, they will at least 'make you whole' so that you get either a replacement or your money back so you haven't technically lost anything, which wouldn't happen on eBay for example, at best you might get six months via Paypal but only a month on eBay itself.

Anyway, I still maintain that Amazon will always replace where they can do so as that way they at least maintain a sale, albeit with slightly reduced profits, where as if they refund they have clearly lost the sale and potentially the customer who is likely peeved at having to replace their product, probably at higher cost, if it was something bought on sale like this....

ST3123
16 May 16 #43
Sure I realise replacement is not guaranteed on warehouse items, though I'd argue for it in this case as you couldn't replace it for the same price anywhere else. But what I meant was you wouldn't be left with a dead monitor and no recourse like you could say buying on eBay (after the 30 day guarantee).
HedgyHoggy
15 May 16 #42
'as swift replacement is literally guaranteed for the first year ' - no it's not. They offer refund or replacement, but replacement isn't guaranteed.

Can I just say, that peoples eyesights are different. Some wont notice the flicker some will... even 60hz at 1440p is annoying, i've overclocked mine to 65hz and that's a touch better.
Also general windows stuff like scrolling is much smoother.

I've got this monitor, the main and probably deal breaking issue is that the screen flickers with a purple series of lines every now and then (i would say every 5-10 mins for me) and it's not an issue that I can seem to fix. This problem is reported a lot, and to me it looks like all the monitors have this fault.

Can you happily run a 4k screen at 2560x1440 or are there downscaling issues with it not being at the native resolution?
hwangeruk
15 May 16 #37
But in contrast, I have a 4k Dell, and running it as 60hz (even at work for non gaming using HDMI it was sh*te at 4k @ 30hz) I literally ran to the shops to get the DisplayPort cable I needed to get it to 4k and 60hz and now I love it. Even dragging windows at 30hz was horrible. I'm not the fussiest person in the world, but 30hz for me at 4k was unusable. Horses for courses.

If a product becomes defective after 30 days you won't be able to create a returns label using our Returns Support Centre - you'll need to Contact Us. You may wish to visit the manufacturer's website or contact them directly as they may be able to offer troubleshooting and support with the issue you have with the product. Please see Manufacturer Contact Details and After Sales Service.

I also had chat state that a 12 month warranty from amazon is included on 2 tv's yesterday

I have two AOC 4k monitors next to each and run one at 60Hz (mini display port) and the other at 30hz (HDMI). For normal office stuff - mostly coding, some browsing, I can't tell any difference between the two.

Also run a Philips 40" 4k at 30hz and found it fine, including watching films.

No games sadly.

Very tempted by this to go with the 40", but that would mean moving stuff around/sorting some space.
jrob01
15 May 16 #34
I can assure you that it is 30 days. Some advisors confuse Amazon Warehouse warranty with the mainstream site. The UK Amazon Warehouse returns policy is here (bottom of page): https://www.amazon.co.uk/b?node=3581866031
ST3123
15 May 16 #33
They do have a twelve month warranty, I confirmed it on chat shortly after ordering as the wording on the page does make it look like it's only 30 days but it is 12 months, well according to the advisor I spoke to, which is good enough for me as I have a record of them stating it in the chat, also others have mentioned earlier in the thread that it's 12 months.

Do products come with a warranty?
No. Used products generally do not come with a manufacturer's warranty but all of our items are backed by Amazon’s satisfaction guarantee i.e. 30 days return policy.

Is non-native really such an issue on a modern panel though? Plus 1080P should need very little (if any) scaling as it should map directly to 4K with it being the same aspect ratio too.

Beginning to think people are just wanting to hate on this monitor with words like "crap" that tell you absolutely nothing about the picture on the monitor in useful terms e.g. what exactly is wrong with the image? too soft? poor colour? jerky?

As others have noted for a large majority of people not bothered about specifications this will probably be a great monitor, even if it spends most of it's life in 1080P mode...

Are there? at this kind of price? and especially from a reputable seller like Amazon? Serious questions as I was looking for a 1440p screen for a while as 1440p, is a better match for my set up than 4k really but I couldn't find any at a good price. i'd actually argue that the market is getting saturated with 4k screens at the budget and high end markets and hence the dedicated 1440/1600p screens are getting squeezed out of the market but I could be wrong, just my observations.

Anyway as a result, I settled for this one instead, since it can do 1440p at 60hz anyway, so I'm taking the 4k support more as a bonus though might use it for the desktop too if it's still readable.

That said, I'd actually love to see some 4k footage on it, just to see the increased detail the format offers, tempted to try 4k Netflix for a month, would this play 4k films say on Netflix from the computer?, or does it not support the necessary HDCP standards?

Mine failed after a few months, but while it was working I found the colours dull and not uniform across the screen. I am not fussy about these things, but the reviews really are correct, it's just a poor monitor.

Absolutely, even if you only use it at 1920x1080 or 2560x1440. But high failure rate is very concerning.

one of the reviews says it struggled @1200 at 60hz, wouldn't waste my money on it, theres plenty of 1440p ones reduced as new
lazyboy
15 May 16 #17
I bought one when they were reduced last year. Don't waste your money, 30hz really is unusable even in an office environment. Much better to buy a good quality 1080p monitor.

Deal description says this can do 2560x1440 @60Hz, so presumably can do 1080p at that rate if not higher?

15 May 16 2 #14
I've just ordered one. I remember considering buying one about a year and a half ago from DABs at £299.99, my how the prices have fallen! To be fair I know the DABs one was brand new and this one isn't but still.

While it's a little disappointing it isn't a 'real' 4K monitor thanks to that 30hz refresh rate, I actually don't think it will bother me all that much as my PC is nowhere near powerful enough for 4K gaming, but could run some 3D games at 2560 quite comfortably, which this screen supports at 60hz and should still offer more detail than my existing, slightly higher than full HD, 1200 monitor, which still has a lovely image, but at nearly six years old is probably living on borrowed time and due for replacement, or more likely demotion to second screen duties.

The negative reviews and reported reliability problems do worry me for sure, but Amazon must surely be about the safest place to buy such a screen as swift replacement is literally guaranteed for the first year at least and while I'd really like longer, even if it packs up after say 18 months, at this price, it isn't the end of the world....

Finally despite the lukewarm rating I'd say this is absolutely a hot deal regardless of whether you like the product, it even undercuts eBay completed listing prices but up to £100, which wouldn't have Amazon 12 months warranty or support either....
SleepyChris
15 May 16 #11
