Is there a dedicated counter for the take away coffee or do you have to stand at the bar at 0830 with the alchies ordering their first pint of the day?

Not if you want to drink it in the cafe, but: "The change will not affect customers wanting to take away a free hot drink from the cafes, or from the company’s supermarkets"

Holdon.. don't Pret a Manger do a 99p filter coffee? that's pretty darn good too.
Even McDonalds at £1.89 isn't bad, you get the loyalty points too so every 6th cup was free

Depending on the exchange rate at the time, in Spain a coffee is only £1, so what type of beans are they using in the UK.

To be fair, Waitrose have 344 stores and you need to sell your soul* for a Waitrose Card to get it. Wetherspoons have just shy of 1000 pubs, which makes it almost 3 times as likely you'll run into one of them than a Waitrose.
*By soul, I mean Name, Address, Age, Shopping habits, Shoe size, Bra size, Favorite Colour, Lock of Hair, Deeds to your house, Inclusion of your will, Spare key to your back door and the sacrifice of your first born.

He probably is. A kettle operating at 3kw, taking 1 minute to boil, on an 'average' electricity tariff, might cost 0.5p to boil (excluding standing charge). This is assuming it runs at the full 3kw, which it probably doesn't.
w_orbit
19 May 16#53
5p.. of course it will. Are you taking into account boiling a 3kw kettle in your 5p estimate ?

No - the sugar is £2.95 extra
Finding a wooden stick to stir the sugar in with that hasn't already been used and put back... priceless. At least in most of my local spoons.... (which ironically lack in actual spoons)

Do a quick lap of most sofa retailers and they tend to offer you a cup tea or coffee for free! But you might pay for it if you get stuck with a pushy salesperson, which may end up costing you over a £1000 over 4 years interest free!

A free tea or coffee when you shop with us:
Nothing says ‘welcome’ more than a lovely cup of tea or coffee. That’s why we like to offer you a free hot drink when you come shopping at Waitrose. It’s just one of the ways we like to say thank you for your custom.
That’s why we've come up with this short guide to help all our myWaitrose customers make the most of the scheme and to remind you about scanning your myWaitrose card.
We hope that through observing this free tea and coffee etiquette we can continue to offer a complimentary hot drink each time you shop with us.
Free tea and coffee etiquette
Become a myWaitrose member and shop with us a little (or a lot)
Enjoy a free tea or coffee when you pop in for your groceries
Swipe your myWaitrose card at the till
Free tea or coffee
In our Cafés, Bakeries and Deli Counters
We are asking myWaitrose members who wish to enjoy their free tea or coffee in either a café, bakery or deli counter with eat in seating to also purchase something when enjoying their drink. This enables us to continue to offer our customers the enjoyable service they expect.
If you're not visiting the café, bakery or deli counter you can still pick up a free tea or coffee from the self-service machine when you are shopping with us. Remember to present your myWaitrose card. It's always free in the supermarkets I go in you just ask for a cup and show card Or in cafe just buy a 25p banana and the drinks free!!

Just a heads up. You can also get a filter coffee for 99p in Pret. It's decent, strong coffee as well.

As others have said, its free for a take away, or just 25p (the price for a banana) if you sit in the cafe and read the paper.
Just a slight aside, if you go via the checkout and have the coffee on your spend it shows as £2 or so, then add on your paper say another £1 or so, which means you only actually need to spend another £2 to get the paper and coffee free on a £5 spend (weekdays)...hope that makes sense

And a perfectly reasonable stance for them to take in my humble opinion. If you want to to just grab coffee then fill your boots, and fair play to them for letting people do so, but taking up space at one of their tables and preventing paying customers from sitting down is simply wrong to me.

19 May 16#31
COLD - if you are going to take it away anyway then just wait till you get home or to where-ever you are going and make a cup of coffee there instead. It will cost abut 5p.

Collect your stickers on the side of the cups (don't forget the warning to remove once empty!) and get 7th cup 'free' making the cost of each c. £1.10 - still not as cheap as this offer but getting closer!!

McDonalds £1.89
Starbucks £2.29
Wild Bean £2.29

Starbucks is £1 for a comparable coffee, and has been for some time..... However. If you use one of their reusable beakers (£1) then you get 25p off each time and a grande instead of small (as long as you add milk at the counter rather than the till).......a far better deal in my opinion.

Their breakfasts aint bad (always go for one when up early for holiday travel, etc.), just ruined by the smell of stale beer from the night before.
