On one occasion last year, my car was parked in direct sunshine with an outside temperature of 31°C. The car dashboard, after 1 hour, was at 70°C according to my IR thermometer. Plenty hot enough to crucify a dashcam containing a LiPo battery. For my capacitor-equipped dashcams ... no problem.
paul_merton
21 May 16 4 #3
Better to get the slightly more expensive variant with the super capacitor instead of a lithium ion battery if you plan to leave it permanently fitted in the car. I dread to think what could eventually happen to a cheap lithium ion battery after repeated exposure to hot car environments over the summer!

Thanks very much Gravity Magnet. it's available on eBay for £47 so I'll plump for that. I appreciate you replying. Steve.

Steve, I think you have missed out. The price went (back) up circa 4days ago, according to Camel Camel Camel. It may well drop again. But even at 50quid it's a fair price for a good camera, and compared to the Transcend and Nextbase prices it's a bargain. I'm happy with my Mobius, finished the hardwire yesterday. Good luck with your choices and shopping.

Hi Guys, I'm trying to buy this but as soon as I go to GET DEAL its showing at £49.99. Have I missed out of the £39.99 price? Thanks. Steve.

Don't take any notice of this post - unfortunately I did and got a lovely windscreen cup mount but a shockingly bad camera. You can barely make out the cars let alone the number plates. I was so hacked off I ordered one of these Rexing cameras and it seems pretty good. Cheers mate....

Why is this so cheap?

Rexing is a American Co, one would think it would be cheaper on Amazon.com, yet it's $100 dollars or around £70, surely worth a go at this price. Has it always been 39.99 here?

I've had 5 Mobius cameras and 2 of them eventually developed faults. One of them just randomly stopped working for more than a few minutes at a time, whereas the other would refuse to turn on if the temperature was less than about 0C. Now it's summer, I'm finding it has the same problem starting up in high temperatures, whereas the other ones are fine (nothing to do with batteries as they all use super capacitors).

That said, I'd still choose a Mobius over anything else at a similar price as they fit best in my car without being too conspicuous.

24 May 16 #41
Power to the accessory socket, or any circuitry to which a dashcam may be hardwired, will be disconnected in an impact.

Hence the need for the dashcam to contain a functioning battery or capacitor, so that the video clip containing evidence of the accident is not lost or corrupted.

Mobius has an external heatsink to dissipate heat away from the CPU, etc.

That the heatsink gets hot is evidence that it's doing its job well, & is one reason Mobius keeps on working long after other dashcams have gone to landfill.

You don't have many friends, do you?

"I must seek out the edge-case meaning and attack everyone with my knowledge of everything" - what a pain in the ass you must be.

To clear-up your tantrum - I didn't say you don't need a battery AND a capacitor, cars don't kill power completely on impact (because airbags and door locks and other things) but they just might kill the cam and PLENTY of dashcams INCLUDING Mobius die from internal heat (the Mobius being tiny is a particular issue as it gets REALLY hot - grab it after it's been on for an hour for a nice burn!) which means every day is a 'hot day' was my point (that you missed)

I have a thinkware 750 linked to an anypower lithium ion dedicated dashcam pass through battery which in turn is linked to the car battery. works a treat. I've had dash cams for more than the years in my cars. I also have a mini 0806 in my other car which for the money is ok. pic quality is ok but everything else is garbage. just need to install my blackvue 500 in the wife's car
royals
23 May 16 #38
I wouldn't use that, I've used and have some of the cameras on there and they are mostly rubbish. I have the mini 0806 which has a decent p8c quality but has zero support, configure is via the tiny screen and options are limited.
royals
23 May 16 #37
get a proper dash cam like those from thinkware, blackvue or winycam. thinkware 750 is the best I've used as it doesn't affect dab radio. blackvue 750 is probably the best built, winycam 100 has the best pic quality, closely followed by the thinkware 750 then the blackvue 750

A dashcam without a functioning internal battery or capacitor is not fit for purpose. Without it, the vital clip being recorded when external power is cut, i.e. the one with the evidence of your innocence in the accident you've just had, will be lost or corrupted.

Cars made in the past few years automatically switch off the car's electrical system in an impact, so external power will not be available to save the vital clip recording the accident.

Nonsense. Mobius is by far the most reliable, durable & trustworthy dashcam available at anywhere near it's price. My Mobius cams are 2 years 8 months & 2 years old, respectively. Both have performed perfectly since day 1.

Nothing unusual about my experience. At the DashCamTalk site, Mobius is legendary for it's reliability, & is the default choice for good performance, discreetness, reliability & durability at low cost.

I keep my phone mounted on windscreen with this running in the background:

If I did drive every day though I might go with a dedicated camera.

am i right in saying this doesn't have a motion sensor to record when NOT driving?
so if you leave the car parked up and something happens infront.. it won't be recording.

whereas this model does?

Just to clear-up possible confusion here - the battery in a Dashcam is only there to allow the cam to power-off 'gracefully' when the ignition power is cut. If you run the camera constantly (e.g. from an "always hot" charging point) or power-off the camera before you turn the car off, you don't need it.

A capacitor does a similar job (it lasts less time but long enough for a graceful power-off) and is less affected by heat than a battery.

To be honest, I'd be more worried about running the cam for long periods than I would about 'summer heat'. These cams get pretty hot inside - that's more likely to kill the battery and - indeed - the camera itself (those micro Mobius dashcams were notorious for dying of their own heat)

Also - buy from somewhere you have comeback with, FAR better you can return a faulty unit than write-off the investment (those Chinese shipped ones are cheap for a reason!)

You don't have to use that massive piece of plastic ( it clips on and off the camera ) the actual camera itself looks nearly identical to this one, the big piece of plastic of if you want to place the camera half way down your screen and to cover the cable

I've just followed the link to Amazon and couldn't help laughing when I read the Product Safety section. It said "Warning: Protective equipment should be worn. Not to be used in traffic". So, make sure there are no other cars on the road when you use it and always wear anti-radiation suits :stuck_out_tongue:

Depends on the particular car. My last car (R56 Mini Cooper) didn't have a black dotted zone around the rear view mirror, so mounting up to the headliner was doable.

That massive peice of plastic as you call it, is optional

you will find you cannot mount any cam flush with the headliner as the sun filter behind the rear view means you will have to mount further down your window.

Good dashcam option (cheap, +ve reviews), and I'm convinced re capacitor upgrade. It came down to toss up between this and Mobius... at 11pm last night after a few hours of review reading, videos etc (initial sweep produced short list of Mobius, Mini 0805, Runcam2, Maisi 730 and even a Xiaomi Yi). I went with Mobius in the end due to size, reliability, add ons available, and wealth of good info on upteen forums. I got the usual add ons of capacitor, sticker/mount, hardwire kit). See hyperlinks from ChrisUK (thank you) in most liked post http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/mobius-v3-c2-1080p-hd-camera-41-delivered-from-uk-with-code-banggood-com-2341827

I have been using this since late last year (rear dasshcam). It started playing up recently..repeated start and stops automoatically. However picture quality is good (both day and night). Having said that nothing beats a mobius (my front dashcam).

If you search on ebay "B40C dashcam" or "A118C Dashcam", you will find many capacitor versions. If you want to use it as dashcam, make sure the mountig bracket (with 3M sticker) is included or you would need to order separately.

Also, head over to Techmoan for detailed review.....

I've been thinking of getting a dashcam to record when out driving, is this OK for a first camera or get something else.
J1135
22 May 16 #11
YEah but with the auto vox you've got that massive piece of plastic, meaning on most vehicles you wont be able to adjust the camera so its hidden right behind the rear view mirror from drivers perspective.

I'd rather cut down on the size of the unit and have the side entry usb routed under the head lining.

I have this issue! so I think going by what's been said on the posts here the battery is fried! the camera still works perfectly when plugged in, but when I turn off the engine the power stops and the last file is lost. oh well! time for a new battery or camera
DarkReborn11
21 May 16 #8
The batterys quite small but it is a slight worry if it's running in the heat but the most likely effect is the battery will fail. Now the dashcam will still work but when power is lost, it will immediately turn off meaning the last recorded footage won't be saved or become corrupted. In the event of an accident modern cars switch off all power.

I was going to buy a nexbase cam but rrad many reviews of the battery failing however you can purchase a small battery (150mah) and solder the joints
