These older 4K TV's are predictably going to get very cheap now the Ultra HD Premium spec has been agreed upon for HDR equipment. I'll be waiting patiently for Ultra HD Premium to become more affordable and then jump in.

There's another review by T3 gadget magazine here.

age old argument about tech changing. this is a decent TV at a good price with or without 4k. by the time that spec is agreed there'll be new tech coming out.
joeybutterface
9 May 161#7
Not at all. But the 4K stuff has been a mess of competing standards so I've stayed away, just as I stayed away when competing standards were fighting to see what would replace DVD. We now know that what replaces HD and Blu Ray is Ultra HD premium.
Newbold
9 May 16#8
But there are still competing HDR formats, so you could still be in for a long wait. And then there's bound to be something else to worry about.

Not really Sony is following the new standard but using their own branding. Samsung and Panasonic are both on board with Ultra HD premium. That's all you need as these are the big players.
In terms of content, next generation Blu Ray is agreed Ultra HD premium. And both Netflix and Amazon are on board with streaming.

I have this and paid £1200 6 months ago, it is awesome, yes it's probably not as good as the 55" or the newer panasonics that are being released, but at this price it's amazing value for money - I paid nearly as much for the smaller 702B for my kitchen

From Which Magazine:
Impressive Panasonic 4K TV 71%
Pros: Good picture quality (particularly on 3D), impressive sound, useful range of features
Cons: Some niggles with the remotes and instruction manual, PVR feature lacks pause/rewind functionality
Picture:
This TV has impressive picture quality pretty much across the board, with the standout being 3D. Films in 3D have superb depth and steady motion, along with very little crosstalk (when the picture can seem doubled). If you can find some 4K ultra HD content to watch you'll see very sharp pictures with balanced contrast and colours. HD TV watched through HDMI, such as when using a Sky HD box, brings crisp, detailed pictures, although skin-tones can appear a little sickly. You get the same issue on Freeview and Freeview HD but, again, the picture is very watchable. The viewing angle is narrow, which means the picture fades if you're watching it from an angle.
Sound:
Panasonic TVs don't always have good sound quality, but the Panasonic TX-50CX802B bucks that trend. You get a balanced, clear and rich sound from the speakers that'll enhance your TV viewing. If you want a bit extra audio oomph for film night, then you can use HDMI ARC or the digital audio outputs (with support for 5.1 Dolby Digital) to connect a sound bar or home cinema system.

It's still a lot of TV for the money even by the 2016 set standards. Many of the 2016 screens on offer in the £700-£1.5k price range are still 8 bit panels - even panasonic's DX range, so won't be massive leaps beyond performance of 2015 panels unless you start paying £2k+.
The main complaint of this screen is that there can be vertical and horizontal light bands down the sides, but I believe this can be gotten rid of with settings, and the other complaint I see are the narrow viewing angles, but this is the tradeoff you offset by having a VA panel with better blacks than an IPS panel with wider viewing angles.
The one I have my eye on is the LG50UH850V as it's supposedly 10 bit, although it may be 8bit+dithering too, so will have to wait for reviews before biting.

I have this screen. From what I can tell, it was the flagship model of the (non-OLED?) 2015 range, and had excellent reviews at its original price of >£1,600. It's a cracking telly, frankly. The blacks are deep (it has local dimming too), the colours rich and vibrant, 3D is excellent and there is minimal DSE. There is a certain amount of backlight uniformity issue present on full screens of single colours as a result of its edge-LED tech, but this genuinely isn't ordinarily noticeable. It upscales terrifically well, and 4K content on the Amazon Prime app looks stunning. I bought and returned Sony and Samsung TVs before settling on this one and couldn't be happier; I'd definitely recommend it. If anyone has any questions about it, I'll be happy to try and answer them.

BristolBillyBob
9 May 16#32
Yeah, this is one of the reasons I took the Sony back. Even with the most recent updates, it was sluggish, liable to extended lock-ups and even crashing. Sure, Firefox OS on the Panasonic is more limited in terms of apps, but all the big TV players are there and work really well.
Jimmyboy
9 May 16#33
I have heard that too. At the moment this model only has HDR streaming. Apparently there will be a software update in the next month or so which will enable the HDMI ports to be able to handle HDR. To utilise these you also need an ultra HD Bluray player which are £500+ at the moment and very little content. You would also need this to use the 4k version of Amazon's Fire Tv (although you could get round this by just using the tv's built in Amazon app.
I'm not convinced about the software update though as Panasonic have no incentive to roll it out as this is last years model they would rather you just bought a 2016 model which already has HDR via HDMI.
Jimmyboy
9 May 16#34
I believe Panasonic have said they won't be updating Firefox OS on 2015 tvs only the newer 2016 ones.
I considered this tv but in the end decided to sacrifice the 3D and bought the DX700 model instead which was more money.

Although I'm impressed with the PQ overall, I'm finding that on light backgrounds every edge of the TV shows visible darkening (like a shadow). In addition, on flat coloured backgrounds, it becomes clear that both left and right edges loose vividness of colour (even when sat smack bang centre), i.e. the red YouTube loading page.
Can anyone else confirm?
BristolBillyBob
11 May 161#73
I notice something similar on mine, but not massively, and I only really spot it on loading screens like the YouTube one you mention. I think with any edge-lit (and possibly direct-lit, too) LED TV you'll see something of this, but it depends how pronounced it is, and if it's something you're willing to live with; that comes down to your personal taste. You may find that dropping the backlight setting helps a fair bit? I've dropped mine to about 45 which really helped.

Why? I spoke to the Panasonic rep in Currys the other day and he confirmed this was the last of the batch so when they're gone, they're gone. If you want to hold on as long as possible to see if the price goes down further then you could buy it from your local Currys, don't unbox it and you'll be able to keep it for 21 days before taking it back for a full refund. In that time, if the price goes down - buy the new one.
However, this is a very good deal at the moment as you get the £50 off plus £10 back for every goal your team scores in the Euro's which, realistically, should be at least another £20 off. Also, if you go via TCB then you get 5.5% for reserve and collect items.
