No, you need to install the play services framework and some other bits n bobs too. Then multiple reboots to get it working. It's a faff.

But it's definitely pre-installed on this model.

Pro, prime, pro-prime?

I've seen a comparison chart before but can't seem to find it now.

Is the pro-prime the 5.5" with 3gig RAM... Is that the difference or is there more to it?

Its all a bit confusing.

All redmi note 3's have same size screen.

The pro is 16gb/2gb and pro prime is 32gb/3gb bith with SD 650. The older note 3 has a mediatek cpu but still same price.

The redmi 3 has a smaller screen but is a different phone.

This phone comes in a few versions. The one listed here is the Global version and has the Snapdragon 650 CPU,it comes with the Global firmware which has Google Play Services pre-installed.

The other variants are intended for the Chinese market and use local alternatives to Play Services.

You will need to flash the global rom from the manufacturers forum to get Play Store. I'm quite rom savvy having started back with Windows Mobile on old htpc devices and even I found the instructions I could find somewhat unclear. There may be better guides out there though.

Im I right in thinking (from what I have read in previous threads) that if the Global ROM has been installed then it means that the seller has opened the box to do this, and could have possibly installed malware at the same time?

Picard123
2 Jun 16 1 #69
Slow as nails though. Even a class 10 card is noticeably slower than the onboard eMMC memory and even you can't move every app onto external storage.

The Xiaomi has the powerful hardware, particularly if you look at Geekbench type benchmarks.
Wibblefish
2 Jun 16 #70
I think most people over the age of 25 probably only have 2 or 3 gig of apps anyway?? Im 40 and have 3 apps and all my storage is for photos so speed is irrelevant. Just looking for a better build quality and camera then my SU6 so the 2gb/16gb seems to fit the bill?
Picard123
2 Jun 16 1 #71
You're only speaking for yourself only in terms of speed and storage required. Google Maps, Co-Pilot, various live travel/train/traffic alert apps take up a ton of space and need some processing power and good memory throughout. I don't want to be waiting 10 seconds for the phone to stutter and stall and get its act together when I say, "Navigate to XYZ." FB, Outlook, Emails, Messenger, diary and calender syncing etc takes up a ton of space, as does my Kindle library, Play Books library, Audible library, online/offline Pocket reading, Chrome etc. And that's before we even get into music collections and videos. Android is also very memory inefficient and clogs up with junk and broken files over time. I would always say, get the biggest memory capacity you can if the price is reasonable. +£25 seems pretty reasonable to me.
Wibblefish
2 Jun 16 1 #72
Yeah i am speaking for myself and everyone else that will never get close to filling 16gb (prob more like 10gb usable right?) and you are speaking for yourself and those that will. There are 2 sides to everything and you don't seem to even acknowledge that for many people having the extra 16gb wont even be worth an extra £1 let alone £25.

Plenty of online reviews seem to suggest the 2gb/3gb RAM issue is almost undetectable.
Picard123
2 Jun 16 2 #73
Do you not travel around, drive or use the trains? Go away for weekends? What do you do, take a map, local travel guide, phrasebook with you and constantly listen to the radio for travel updates? Do you not listen to much music or use email or read much? Do you not have any interest in sport or use the phone for shooting 1080p videos of anything ever?

3gb/32gb is infinitely preferable over 2g/16gb. If they were asking +£50, then I could understand but £25 is peanuts for the extra speed and capacity and gives the phone more resale value if you ever upgrade.

"We tested the Motorola Moto G 3, which makes no significant claims about its RAM, and found that while its storage can read data at 78MB/sec and write it at 11.22MB/sec, the RAM can be written at 1,885MB/sec. It’s RAM that enables a phone to react quickly, processing a lot of data in not much time. A good example of this is high-resolution, slo-mo video. While the file you end up with may not be particularly large in size, your phone actually has to handle the uncompressed data from the camera sensor at an incredible rate. RAM is also essential to allow for background processes and quick-switching between apps without lag or delay. "Background processes" refer to the items working in the phone that aren’t visible, with which you aren't actively interacting. RAM is also important for juggling "service" processes, such as downloads and background music playback. We’ve used a lot of phones recently that struggle to maintain good performance while downloading an app update: a pretty sad state of affairs."

I opted for the 16gb version as well. The only thing that takes up lots of space is media like music, photos and videos. Setting the camera to save to external media has always been the way forward for me and I also keep my music on the same sd card. Never experienced any slowdowns with this method..

Sorry pressed like by mistake should have been reply i have 16gb htc one m8 never had a problem with apps i have google maps co'pilot and another sat nav Osmand on it.the youtube video i posted shows very little difference in speed so i would think for most people the 16gb one would be fine.

I've got the 2GB version with the MediaTek CPU and the 3GB version with the Snapdragon CPU. The 3GB is a much better experience. I flick between apps quite a lot, running Spotify, Hangouts, Ingress, Runkeeper often simultaneously when I'm out playing Ingress. The 2GB often kills one or more of those apps while they're in the background. The 3GB version doesn't do that at all.

If you're not a heavy multitasker, then 2GB will be fine for you. If you are a heavy multitasker get the 3GB, otherwise you'll regret it.

hey bud I'm stuck on the one it shipped with 7.1.9.0 I think, I think this is the one that they slap on for Western buyers... it's starting to annoy me as I think there is an update but we can't get it

To avoid that install the latest European ROM for xiaomi.eu

That's a vendor ROM (nothing to worry about)
I'd just flash the latest Global

just had my phone delivered and the lock screen came up on 1st boot. Someone has set a pattern to unlock so i cant evn get into the phone and it wont boot into recovery either. Anyone else had similar issues please?
elrasho
14 Jun 16 #145
Lol! Sorry but that's funny.

Try factory resetting it by turning it off then holding volume up or down (can't remember which) the pressing the power button. Navigate the Recovery menu using volume up and down keys and the power button to select the option

Not sure whats funny about a phone i cant use. tried booting into recovery but it wont as i said in the first post
elrasho

Think you need to unlock the bootloader first to get into recovery.
keenan316
14 Jun 16 #149
Can you get into fastboot? Hold volume down and power button and see if you get to the fastboot screen..
mcfcuk
15 Jun 16 1 #150
xiaomi no longer allows you to get into to recovery mode via power button and volume. to change rom you need to unlock first then flash new rom.which can be done via zermattbusby link below
zermattbusby
15 Jun 16 #151
Sorry to hear that, who was the seller?
As mentioned above the bootloader is locked therefore you cant enter recovery
Think you have two options :

1) Contact the seller and ask for a replacement ASAP
2) Flash the Global ROM as described in post #143

If it were me, id go for option 2 baring in mind even without the lockscreen problem you'd still want to flash the Global
geordie458
15 Jun 16 #152
Thanks for the help everyone. Stuck at work now so wont be able to look at the phone for a while. I thought it came with the global ROM already?

Which wall charger are you guys using, obviously the 2 pin supplied is useless here in the UK...
Volts/amp?
I've got a charger that's 5v/1500amp, and it seems to take an age to charge...

Looking online, there's differing views on whether it has quick charge 2.0 available or not, if it has, that will be the best charge to go for?
geordie458
16 Jun 16 1 #154
Thanks all (except elrasho) for the advice regarding my locked phone. I contacted the seller and explained my problem, even sending a photo of the lock screen. he suggested I try a certain pattern and hey presto it worked!!!

16 Jun 16 #155
Did they not send a socket adapter?
itr786
16 Jun 16 #156
It doesn't look like it, just the original 2 pin charger
elrasho
16 Jun 16 #157
I did say try unlocking the bootloader if you can read. Pretty obvious you had to contact the seller as only they would know the pin code. Next time buy a Doro mobile.
phil001
16 Jun 16 #158
Would have thought any charger will work, but for equivalent charging times to the original charger use one with same or better current specification (Amps). The charger(s) will have this information on it.

Looking at images of the charger online it appears the original is 2A and takes 2 hours to charge...
http://www.vivdeals.com/blog/xiaomi-redmi-3-reviews/

Simplest thing would be to buy a socket adapter

New Note: The warning below was based on information I had at the time of writing it. However based on others' feedback since I posted below, I'm in the process of verifying whether the information was correct. In the meantime I'm removing the big caption of 'WARNING' from my post.

I received a rednote 3 NOT a rednote 3 pro.

In Settings > About Phone, It will tell you what processor you have. If you see 1.8 Ghz or less, then its NOT the pro. It should be 2 Ghz.

Has anyone else fallen for this scam? I would be grateful if you let me know. I'm about to contact AliExpress for support for the first time, can anyone reassure me its not going to be too painful?

Calm down, you'll end up giving yourself a nose bleed.
It is a pro version.
itr786

If you want to be certain, type in 'phone chipset' into playstore, download one of the apps that gives you info on your device, which I'm sure will put your mind at ease

Hi elrasho, yes I checked my order details on AliExpress and it is the correct (pro) version I ordered.

18 Jun 16 #167
keenan316, you mean from laughing at me? but for having been unlucky or for being an idiot?

At the moment I would prefer to have received the correct one and look like an idiot and being laughed at than having to sort this. I bought this as a present to my partner and I'm panicking.
ssatoh_inreverse
18 Jun 16 #168
Too late, even my ears are bleeding profusely. At first I searched on the net and the comparison websites suggest it is NOT pro:
http://www.phonearena.com/phones/compare/Xiaomi-Redmi-Note-3-Pro,Xiaomi%20Redmi%20Note%203/phones/9877,9803

(there were other comparison websites I checked)

Then I checked on the official site: http://www.mi.com/

If you choose the region as UK or International, you will only find the spec for the Redmi Note 3 NOT Redmi Note 3 pro - I don't know why. You have to choose 'mainland china' .. however the names are different after google translate, so it was a lot of trouble but eventually I was able to work it out and that's when I came to my conclusion that I've been duped.

However, if someone was able to prove me wrong here, I would be very grateful even at the cost of being laughed at.

Also in the About Phone section it says: "Redmi Note 3" in Model number. I was expecting it to have 'Pro' in there?
elrasho
18 Jun 16 #169
As suggested download a chipset app and see what it says, how much ram have you got? It should be 3gb

18 Jun 16 1 #171
In China there is only Xiaomi Redmi Note 3. The Pro bit was only added by 3rd party companies.
Under settings, in the "about phone" section, it will only say Redmi Note 3.

The CPU should say Hexa-Core 1.8Ghz Max..

Like this photo..

http://www.droidgizmohub.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/Install-Cyanogen-12.1-ROM-on-Redmi-Note-3-Snapdragon.jpg

Does yours look like that?
itr786
18 Jun 16 #172
Download an app from the playstore, just type in 'phone chipset'.
It'll tell you what version you have.

The snapdragon version you have should also have a 16 megapixel camera as apposed to 13.
ssatoh_inreverse
19 Jun 16 #173
Thank-you to all who responded to my post and for your help. As per your instructions I downloaded an app which displayed the hardware information. It showed that the CPU was 1.8Ghz. That was still contrary to one of the comparison website which claimed that the CPU should be 2Ghz. However it also showed that the camera is 16mp .. and in the comparison website, it displays a 13mp for the 1.8Ghz version. This all means that the information on the comparison website doesn't seem all up to scratch.

In combination to the other information you provided here, I read and watched some more reviews on the internet and there's now enough information which suggest a good probability that I may, after all, have the correct phone. I wish there was an official spec in xiomi's website to confirm. However what keenan316 says "The Pro bit was only added by 3rd party companies" may explain why this isn't the case.

Present sorted for partner and if there's any complaint that it isn't 2Ghz, I'll throw in a reminder that size doesn't matter.

Apologies for the false alarm everyone, I will edit my original post to reassure any future readers. Thanks Again.
