Good deal, own one of these, found the best place to get the Atmos speakers was Amazon France
jayjayuk1234
25 May 16 #28
On that note, i see people put receivers into their AV units with inadequate ventilation and then wonder why they fail
This unit has a few hundred vents on the top for a reason and needs at least 8 inches clear space above

Personally, i wouldn't go for this unit, Atmos on such a low spec receiver is pretty pointless, you need 9.2 or ideally 11.2 and more for a decent Atmos setup
Babbler

jayjayuk1234
25 May 16 #30
Which unit is it? Onkyo started putting fans in these for stupid people, fans inside an av unit is generally a no no, but they made the fans kick in when the unit hits a certain temperature to keep everyone happy, and stupid people safe from overheating their units
rev6
25 May 16 1 #31
The fans kick in regardless of ventilation. If they need fans it's due to design not stupid people.

Does anyone know if it passes HDR? It's HDMI 2.0a but doesn't mention anywhere about HDR signal. Also it says 100w x7. So does that mean it is a 7.1 setup or a 5.1 setup with 2 atmos ceiling speakers? Or neither?
houston26 to weenshukd
25 May 16 #43
isn't there a way for hdr tvs to pass audio only to the amp rather than having everything go through it, I know a lot of 4k tvs do this so you don't have to buy a new receiver.

and I'd guess 7x100 would be 7.1 as you'd probably have an active sub if your spending this much money. mind, im just guessing
Bigfoot600
25 May 16 #44
What planet are you from?
jayjayuk1234
25 May 16 #45
Most 4k devices will have dual HDMI outputs, you can also get a HDMI 2.0 splitter, admittedly they aren't cheap at the moment, but will be eventually, there isn't really much need for HDMI 2 on your av receiver, you end up either paying extra for the privilege or the unit ends up with cut down power or cheaper components, such as this unit, it has lost a lot of weight and power compared to previous models in this range in favour of things like atmos,dts-x, bluetooth and wifi

It has a 7.1 set up or a 5.1.2 set up with atmos speakers. Well worth £299 it has 4k passthrough and sound as well as 3d. Streams music vis the net and through bluetooth on your pc/laptop. Only thing is I do have one of these but now want a 9.1 system however twice the price of a 7.1 system just to add two speakers

Dolby Atmos 5.1.4, the 4 is the speakers in the ceilinghttp://www.selby.com.au/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/Dolby-Atmos-5.1.4.jpg
jayjayuk1234
26 May 16 2 #58
This unit won't do 5.1.4, that's equivalent to 9.1, it only has 7 amps, so 5.1.2

and upward firing speakers are a waste of time, furthermore other than the angle of the speaker there is nothing else special about them, they are just standard speakers, ceiling mount or don't bother

i have 4 x KEF CI200RR-THX in my ceiling, pricey but worth it

Nothing wrong with using optical for audio out if you want as well though for basic devices like a Tivo/Sky box. Also means you can output audio/video direct to TV via HDMI and use TV audio for day to day viewing and then have the optical out as well for the times you do want to use your surround setup.

I love my AVR-X2200W unit, but have never used an Onkyo system to compare tbh. I also have an AVR-X2000 which whilst older is still just as good. The app is nice to use and has some real nice views on how the audio is being processed without having to look on the big screen for it.

I had to put a call into Denon about the Stereo mode on Internet Radio / Airplay making the LFE channel flap badly, and they were very helpful about it - after I re-did the calibration it was fine.

+1 for the Denon. Got the package from Richer Sounds with the MA Mass 5.1 speaker pack and it's a massive improvement on my old Sony AVR/Yamaha speaker setup (Agree Sony are better than unknown brand Onkyo btw..!) although probably mostly down to the new speakers and cables I reckon. The Denon is the best featured and vfm AVR around at the moment..imo.

Is HDR support a consideration for amps or not relevant? ie, just passthrough. I see things like the nvidia shield offering Netflix HDR support which I would obviously want to plug into the amp

EDIT: hokey cokey, I see it is a necessary consideration and this model supports it

I've had an Onkyo for years and it's been great - the only minor issue is some of the buttons on the remote have to be pressed REALLY hard to register.

But do ALL receivers take a couple of seconds to switch source? I know there's a lot of processing and HDMI handshaking going on, but my TV could do it far quicker...

Common issue with a lot of remotes, the conductive contacts wear away over time, take the remote control apart, clean the metal contacts on the circuit board with some cleaning alcohol, then get some baking foil and cut some very tiny pieces and superglue them to the back of the problematic keys replacing the worn conductive rubber

Yes I've been down that road already, the main thing i prefer about using HDMI straight from device to the TV though is it allows you to use different picture settings on the TV for each device, if everything is connected to the AVR and you then use one HDMI from AVR to the TV this means all devices then have to use the same picture settings on that input on the TV.
I have use different picture settings on the HDMI inputs on my TV.

I went into the shop aiming to upgrade my Yamaha with an updated Yamaha for the £300 mark and was actually offered this Onkyo for £300 instead of the asking price of £350+ a few months ago.

I can genuinely say this receiver is absolutely beautiful, the sound compared to my old Yamaha RX-V375 is night and day apart (using the same speakers) and has much better features. I've been told that the Atmos update is coming out this summer at some point, but even so, for this price, I don't think it can be beaten in terms of quality.

Ignore the usual moans about unknown brands and temperatures as this is worth every penny of your money.

Picked one up last night, swapped out as a straight replacement for my older non 4k onkyo no problems. The old one has been an excellent amp for the last 4 years as was the onkyo before it.

It's pretty much exactly the same as the old other than the 4k 60hz support which is perfecto from the brief tests i have done. Sound is identical to old, prolly limited somewhat by my aging speakers/setup. The network services are nice to have but I will probably never use them as you need to go into them before being able to "cast" (spotify et al)

Overall the same great amp i know and love from onkyo with stunning 4k hdr support that my tv demanded. For me, a very worthy upgrade

demo them in RS shop! before onkyo i wanted to buy denon 2200w model, can't remember exactly but did eventually compared it with onkyo txnr636 and I'm so glad I did it and went for onkyo. I'm using it for stereo CD's and flac files got it connected to Cambridge Audio Aero 6, they shake the flor whilst watching movies. I use 5.0.2 set up (yes no subwoofer, don't need one) . two in ceiling speakers do the Atmos job.

Quick one for the "experts" here! I'm returning my Sony BDVN 7200W surround sound system because the blueray player just stopped working and there was too much static in the rear speakers for my liking. I'm stuck between Onkyo and Denon. I'm thinking of getting an AV receiver and then separate speakers as they come on sale rather than purchase an all in one box type of system again. Is it worth getting one of the two here rather than spend the extra money to get THX? Is the sound quality that much more noticeable to warrant the extra cost? Haven't had a really good system yet so I'm looking to build from scratch
rev6
27 May 16 1 #121
THX isn't worth it.
jayjayuk1234

THX is a matter of taste, however a THX certified receiver usually packs a bit more punch (to pass the THX certifications) and can indicate a better receiver
