Price has went up now and no stock. What's the verdict on this: http://www.amazon.de/Onkyo-TX-SR444-7-1-Kanal-Heimkinoreceiver-Raumeinmessung/dp/B00Z6WBO6Q?ie=UTF8&keywords=TXSR444&qid=1464000196&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1 ?

this don't have a phono input, so if you have a turntable with Onboard Phono Stage, then you can plaug it into cd or whatever. if not, then these DAC's can be had for a decent price. You plug the turntable into one of those and then out from that to receiver.

I would never use an amp such as this for listening to vinyl so I think no phono stage is not a great loss. I will keep my old valve amp for the hi-fi. This does look very nice for the money though and always thought Onkyo was a decent make.

Be very careful and be sure to inspect the branding - there is a Chines company selling knock-offs that look exactly like the real think, but on close inspection are branded "WONKYO"

Onkyo do some great stuff, a lot of mid to high end hifi separates will be names most of the general public will not have heard of. The spec on this unit is awesome for the money but the lack of a phono stage may balance the price out a bit. Still a decent receiver...heat added.

Regarding customer service comments, in the UK, I have an TX-NR414, and though I was very happy with it, it began to fail after around 18 months, with the 'known' issue of no-sound from HDMI. Apparently a build/design fault. I contacted Onkyo in the UK, and without any quibble, they sent a courier out with a packing box - courier waited while I packed the amp in the box - they took it away and a week later, it came back fixed and fully working, which I think was very good customer service indeed. I've ordered one of these 545's now, thanks OP. It seems OOS with amazon.de, but fingers crossed, I can upgrade my 414 (want the built in bluetooth/airplay stuff mainly - otherwise the 414 does a fine job for being AV centre/tele-watching).

I bought an Onkyo home cinema system from Amazon last year (different model from this)... the first one had a faulty subwoofer and a dodgy rear-right speaker connection in the unit. Amazon sent me a whole replacement system, which, in turn, had a malfunctioning rear-left speaker and an intermittent subwoofer connector.

Amazon let me take the functional bits from both units to put together one working set-up and then I returned everything else. Then, about three weeks later, the DTS decoder element ceased working and, shortly thereafter, something else gave up the ghost.

Returned for a full refund and spent a bit more to get a decent Toshiba amp and Tannoy speakers from Richer Sounds. Much better!! I know some people rave about Onkyo, but I'd never touch 'em again!
Gixxerman001
21 May 16 #278
Thanks but it tells me I have an invalid serial number, I did try that before & then rang the UK service people (Genserve) & they told me it was because my unit was not covered as it was too old.
Shame (& just more than a bit annoying given the 875 is supposed to be pretty high-end, you'd think they'd be wanting to stand by their products for repeat business which until this happened I was all set for, in all other respects it's one heck of an amp).
Gixxerman001
21 May 16 #277
Well, I'm not going to argue but like I said I think you can almost always do better spec/cost-wise looking elsewhere, Sony used to be good but these days I think many if not most would agree that they have lost their way.

20 May 16 #266
I'm not voting either way because its a good price (even though I think its gone up).

However, I had a £1000 onkyo receiver which had the HDMI fault and I actually had the Onkyo support saying on the phone that they would not fix it out of warranty and even though they're doing others mine didn't qualify. They said they have determined my model (906) it wasn't affected by the issue even though they knew of several other examples on the internet that had the same problem. The support guy sounded embarrassed as he knew their story was horse......

I had to replace every capacitor on the HDMI board myself and by in large it now works, but never ever ever would I buy another Onkyo. Ohers were lucky but I wasn't so they've lost me forever as a customer.

Having said that I haven't voted either way because this is a rant and a deal is a deal for someone but I wouldn't recommend them.

ps. I'm uk too

God no, I'll be looking at Denon, Marantz, Yamaha, Cambridge or Pioneer (depending on reviews, I see Pio is now owned by Onkyo).
Maybe Panasonic depending on reviews.
Sorry, unless things have changed very recently, I just don't think Sony is a good balance of spec to price.
Gixxerman001
20 May 16 #262
Yes I was in touch with Genserve (twice in fact, once a couple of years back when it first happened and lately when I saw news of the recent recall on-line) who were very nice & sympathetic (as I said I saw something on-line about them having a recall & repairing units....but it turned out not to be for units like mine) but the cost is fierce.

It's not Genserve's fault but it's pretty clear these units had a heat problem & eventually give up, the bit that peeves me is that it absolutely is the video card that is fried (no matter what video input is tried the HDMI output is a mush of colour).
It ought to be possible to just buy the video card & fit it at your own risk, it's not difficult to do.

I've also done this, I have a laptop cooler stand on top sucking the air up and a 120mm fan blowing the air away. Decent for the price but beware the HDMI boards in onkyos are woeful. Had 2 different receivers and had to send both back twice! The spec / price ratio is unparalleled, however the quality of components / design lacks. If you can get a pioneer with the same spec even for £100 / £200 more, get the pioneer.

Have they solved their over-heating issues?
My TX SR875 (a brilliant receiver/amp otherwise) fried its video board about 3.5yrs into ownership, I know from reading the net it is far from an isolated case but Onkyo didn't want to know.
It'll cost about £250 - £300 to fix so it's just not worth it, I'll use it purely as an amp (for which it's an utter beast) in another room & look to buy a replacement, I'm sorry to say I just don't think I'll look at Onkyo again.

I've had my 605 since 2007 and use it every day for watching TV. There isn't even the recommended clearance in the TV cabinet it's in. If you sell a lot of something, some of them will break. Also, it's mostly people with broken things that tend to post about their issues on message boards. It's how the company treats its customers when things break that matters. Did they quote you that price for the repair?

In fairness to Onkyo the whole HDMI issue has been supported outside of the usual warranty for years now.

I still however cannot take to Onkyo despite their receivers offering good value and being well equipped on the connectivity front. Depends what you want out of a receiver...whilst no AV receiver is as good as a dedicated stereo amp for music not all of us have the room or favour the convenience of a two in one device.

There are better receivers by other brands out there for a good mix of music and home cinema, Onkyo have always been thin and bright in the sound department. If you want a receive primarily for connectivity, home cinema and gaming then consider them. Personally I have always found the design and sonics of Onkyo not to my own likings.

I have a Logitech Harmony Remote already, I may not have done enough setup, but it's not too reliable - when powering on, sometimes it will power on the TV and the tuner, sometimes 3 dvecies sometimes 2 - say cable tv tuner and the amp, likewise for switching channels it wasn't too good - I get channel 11 rather than 1 etc...

I would recommend Onkyo if there was not for the Hdmi problems they had. I have had my 818 in repair 3 times so far with same Hdmi board issue. Good thing is though they are happy to replace it even out of warranty and it is quick turnaround as well.

Not sure how reliable these new models are, but we will find out in 2-3 years time I guess.

Otherwise seems like a good model if you after receiver in this price range.

Ordered this and then cancelled. Went with the 646 from Richersounds for £329. I know it's a £100 more but it is a higher spec, 2 x hdmi outputs, any issues it will be simple to return and it has DTS:X as well as a few other bits. If none of the above bothers you then it certainly is a very good price at around £220-230ish

I've been using Onkyo Receivers since 2009. They are overrated and they have a very well known problem with their PCB's which overheat. This is why my first one blew, it never worked well from day one. I never learned my lesson and bought a newer model (TX-NR636) i am not impressed by it at all. It freezes a lot when i use internet services (when it does connect) and it is extremely temperamental when using DLNA. So far it is so bad i stopped using it a long time ago for playing music from my PC. Playing music from USB is so slow to respond and the sound is not as good as from my Sherwood Receiver. If i ever need to get a new Receiver it will be from some other company, definately not Onkyo!

I bought it in 2011. I got rid last year. Sainsburys energy sends annual usage with comparisons to the year before. that's when I noticed the difference, and wondered what the hell had changed, getting rid of the amp was the only thing. I often wondered with the sheer heat it gave off how much it was costing to run
cooperdj
18 May 16 #132
Yeah energy prices are completely different now compared to 2011 so it's likely that had more of an effect, there's no way it's costing you £200 p/a to run an amplifier!

Only my electric bill stops me! I had an AVR (an Onkyo, if you've ever heard if it, bought around 2011 . It was always red hot, and my electric bills definitely proved it. I got rid (a space gaining exercise [rid of everything and down to a soundbar], sky box built in the wall etc) and now my electric bill is a third cheaper (£900pa to around £600-700max). This could, however, be the change in oil/energy prices, but its enough to put me off a little, wonder if energy rating of them has improved?.

What about the after sales support though ONKYO?

I had ordered this on a bit of a whim as it seemed an amazing deal, but I saw sense and cancelled it today, as I'm still rather annoyed with Onkyo over how they responded to the issues I was having with my TX-SR 607, which ultimately became unusable with the common HDMI board failure, which caused the OSD to fail as well, and then the LCD display broke too making any kind of adjustment impossible. I tried several contact points for Onkyo including both their UK service centres and contacting them direct and they just didn't want to know.

Despite the fact the problems I faced were VERY common known problem that Onkyo since admitted to, because my receiver wasn't on their very small extended support list, I was advised my only option was to pay over £120 to have a product with a second hand value of £60 (on a good day) repaired, with absolutely no long term guarantee it would continue working even then.....

Needless to say I declined and have since downsized to sound bars. I have kept my pretty nice infinity aureus speakers on the off chance I will one day go back to a dedicated receiver, but I think for most people, now including me, soundbars are the future, not quite so hi-fidelity but a much simpler, neater solution, admittedly at the cost of true surround, but I actually miss it a lot less than I imagined....

Am I being blind? I can't see anything on here or the deal about the plug. On my current Onkyo (great piece of kit btw) the plug can be removed and you could fit a UK one - but this looks like it's hardwired into the amp, so would you need an adapter?

I'm really tempted by this but can't justify it (only really want it for the integrated AirPlay as that's what it offers over my current box)
Thoughtful
18 May 16 #100
Without wishing to open up an EU debate, one of the things they should have done is to have forced manufacturer to be honest and consistent with the specifications.
Richer Sounds quote 65Wpc, Onkyo don't actually appear to know what their product produces as they quote several different figures such as 100Wpc, and 125Wpc. They have stopped quoting power consumption as they have realised people can calculate a rough real world power output too.
So you are left with a figure of what it can produce if you just listen to one of the 9 possible channels!
The reality is that if you are going to use it as a home cinema processor, then it will only output around 20Wpc (on a good day) and that might not be enough for decent speakers.

18 May 16 1 #99
I think you will find buzzduraband was joking about the now long standing infamous "unknown brand" joke on here loughboro guy made many years ago that is still 'fondly' remembered to this day.

Besides it is the other way around, Onkyo now own Pioneer. Pioneer have sold their home theatre division to Onkyo the two sister companies move forward maintaining distinct and separate brand identities. [link]

Personally I am not convinced, besides the chassis build quality there are many similarities now between Marantz and Denon with their merger a number of years ago.

I got Onkyo TXNR-579 few years back. The tuner got broken within first year and was fixed by warranty. After another year it got broken again. That was always the same problem - HDMI board. It was repaired again as the issue was well known and OKNYO decided to extend warranty for their products. However service in the UK was awful. The exchanged the HDMI board but for the one with physically broken one HDMI port. The scratched front panel of the tuner. To fix that they send me new panel to me because they thought I wanted to replace it :-). When I send back the panel and Tuner to the service, after 1 month they said that it was wrong panel and I had to wait for the reparation another 2 months.
After that I decided to buy anything apart from ONKYO!!!!!
Maybe it was just me who had that kind of issues, but be aware and check if this model doe not have any known issues.

Ah, the new generation of HUKDers, eagerly snapping up the Onkyo worms. What started as a one-liner many years ago has defined a generation...(wipes away a tear...)

Ok, back to the deal. My 606 now doesn't turn on, just clicks away happily. To me that smacks of the relays not getting enough power which in turn means the capacitors have failed. So another dive into the bowels of the unit to identify and replace all those blown caps. A proper PITA and completely avoidable if Onkyo had used proper electrolytics in the first place, they should last for 20 years+. A corner cut too far.

Still a hot deal though.

I ask because the wording of the order button suggested payment was going to be taken immediately though that could have been the translation.

Pioneer sold their AV division to Onkyo so it's sort of the other way around. But it's never simple in business is it, presumably they each own bits of each other.

But the higher spec TXNR646 is only £329 at Richer Sounds.
