I'm looking for a good cheap deal and came across this...pretty decent allowance and a saving of £1.50 pm if you go via the Uswitch link. Life Mobile uses the EE network... ...only downside is it's 3G rather than 4G, that may bother some.

...is this a good deal?

My wife switched to LIFE a few months ago and everything was so much better than TalkTalk Mobile (running on Vodafone) that I also switched to LIFE last month from EE and am equally as happy.

Here's a few observations/things to bear in mind:

- Customer service is UK-based, very good and quick to answer the phone.
- Customer service via Twitter also very good.
- There's currently no mobile app for managing your account or checking usage, and their account web-site is not mobile-optimised. Apparently, a mobile app is in the works, although no date yet.
- You have to phone them up to turn voicemail off/on. Can't be done yourself online, or via your handset.
- 3G speeds are great (>20meg down). To be honest, I haven't noticed any difference between them and my 4G EE contract, although I don't download huge files or stream lots of video on mobile data.
- You have to contact customer services to turn roaming on for sending international SMS. Takes 2 hours to become active.
- You can port your number from EE, although depending on the origin of your number, it may take longer than the usual 2 business days. If your EE PAC number starts with the letters "ONE" you'll be ok. If it starts with something else, you may need to contact customer services and it could take a few days longer.
- EE Wi-Fi calling on iPhone and compatible Android handsets is not supported, even though on iPhone it can be turned on in Settings.
- 4G data is supposedly "coming", and is already available to a few customers who had 2 year handset contracts carried over from when LIFE was owned by Phones4U - however, 4G is not available yet to new customers.

Overall, I'm very happy with LIFE.

If you call Three, make a complaint and get put through to the Scottish office, you can get unlimited minutes and texts, 4GB of data, which you can use for tethering, for £9 a month. There is more in this thread:

i'm looking at life mobile. was considering iD but TERRIBLE reviews.
how are life? my main issue is that if I pay say £5 a month for whatever tarrif is that ALL i pay? or will i be shocked with some bill at the end? many of the iD reviews said they had huge unexpected bills. varous reported the data usage wasnt accurate often saying higher that was actually used. others said that with an sms char limit is 160 (normal for all) but once u went over that 160 it would auto change it to an mms & you'd be charged instead of it coming out ur bundle of texts. i'm on o2 and if i go over 160 chars they just take 2 or 3 texts off my bundle to match the length of the message.
someone else said they used up all their data so bought more but instead of only being charged to purchase extra data they were also charged a fee for having finished the data in their bundle in the first place.

would love to hear user experience & feedback.

Life have a cap (default £5) so you don't get bill shocks. Swung it for me. Also it's a 1 month contract so if you don't like then not locked in
Shenx to little_green
5 May 16 2 #19
They have a smart cap set at 5 quid so you won't/cant go over that. So if your on a 5pound deal and use all mins or texts etc then you eat into the cap to a maximum of 5 pound so the max you pay on any given month will be 10 quid.

Have it a few months now seems ok tho I drop out more than a I did with Virgin which is on EE also. Might be my phone tho

I think the MMS thing is people's phones switching to MMS, not the network charging for it, i.e. They have actually sent an MMS. My wife's S6 always tries to do this (at random, it seams, and I can't find the usual setting to stop it!). As for data charges, they do charge per day if you go over and didn't purchase a bolt-on beforehand. I just set a warning level on my phone, with enough to see me through the day, until the bolt-on kicks in.

Same as ID capped at £5 and 30 day contract so if you do have a bad experience you can get your Pac code and leave what people don't realize is that once you use the Pac code the contract automatically stops so to be honest there a lot of scare Mongolian going on when it comes to ID.

When I rang Three when contract came to an end I was surprised that I had to repeat myself many times before the sales person put me through to the final stage person. It was quite a shock as I imagine many people would feel that they were not being given the choice to end their contract. It really was rediculous how many times I had to repeat myself.

Awesome.

Just called them. I was already on a good package from them but wasn't using most of it. Great customer service and they are now giving me 1500min, UNLtexts and 1GB data for £6.

Worth noting to people that you can lower your smart cap to £1 or raise it to a maximum of £30 depending on your needs.
Stompa
6 May 16 #46
Well they're certainly quick to answer the phone (though only available between 8am and 8pm I think?), but other than that I'm not overly impressed.

When I ported my number across they promised a confirmation text when it was complete - it never arrived.

They gave me a date when my DD would be taken, 10 days later and still no sign of that happening.

I've called several times to try and get them to change the time the phone rings before voicemail kicks in from 20 seconds to 30 seconds. They've had a few weeks, but still don't seem to have managed this.

I was on giffgaff for years but got fed up of ever reducing data speeds. Now on life 12 for unlimited calls/sms and 6GB data. Its great, you don't get all the fancy features like call forwarding or wifi calling but it works well. Was told life would be getting 4G although I'm not holding my breath. Anyhow what real benefit is 4G over decent 3G coverage ?
hgthompson
6 May 16 #49
When you read the reviews for LIFE mobile, the main reason for any negative reviews seems to be due to the time taken to port a number into them.... Though people need to remember that the timescale for number porting is defined by the donor network. I.e. LIFE can't take on your number until the old network have released it... so I think some of the negative comments on other forums are a little unfair as this is beyond the control of LIFE. I've switched 3x Orange contracts into LIFE now and in each case the number port was done quickly (approx 2 working days).
Eez1
6 May 16 #50
bit of a noob question

but if i switch to life and have my number ported over will i have to port it over everytime i renew the monthly contract with them?
hgthompson to Eez1
6 May 16 1 #53
No, number porting is just a one time thing.... once you're with LIFE you're essentially on a 30 day rolling contract. If you don't do anything you'll just keep with them on whatever tariff you choose. The beauty is though you can essentially change tariff from month to month if you really wanted to, or leave altogether with only 30 days notice if things don't work.

But the actual number porting is only done once... just sign up to LIFE, then call your old operator for a PAC code, then call up LIFE to give them your PAC code.

Just make sure you're out of contract with your old operator, as they might try to stitch you up with early leaving fees if you're still under contract with them.

Also people who may be on Post Office mobile and EE and other EE MVNO please be aware that it takes longer for number porting. Not exactly sure why but many people have complained about it taking nearly a week to do. It has to be completed by a different department for some reason.

Yes roaming is allowed on this SIM... though you do have to call up to activate roaming, it's not turned on by default. Also any calls made while aborad won't come out of your minutes allowance, you'll get charged the appropriate pence per minute rate for the country you are in.

The 30 days start from when the SIM is activated.... BUT they automatically activate the SIM a couple of days after they dispatch your SIM card... so you can expect the 30 days to start approx 3 days after you order.

For example I placed my order a few months back on the 6th, SIM was dispatched on the 7th, SIM automatically activated on the 9th... now my 30 day period runs from 9th of the month until 8th of the following month.

6 May 16 #87
Nope.

However, if you're already on EE, depending on where your phone number originated (Orange, T-Mobile or EE) there's a small chance it might take longer than the usual 2 business days, but my EE number (which was originally an O2 number) ported in less than 2 days.
hgthompson
7 May 16 #88
This is essentially a fully fledged contract... it's just that instead of locking you in for 12 months you can cancel / change your plan after 30 days. If you're happy with the service then you simply do nothing and you will continue with LIFE mobile month on month and will get a direct debit taken each month accordingly. If you find you don't like LIFE, you only need to give 30 days notice to leave penalty free.

Can someone please check my maths...

Looking for a light user tariff and this looks spot on, but I was about to sign up to Three.co.uk "3-2-1 tariff".

But if I do the maths....

Three.co.uk 3p - minute, 2p - text, 1p - 1 Gb would equal
(1000 * 3p) + (5000*2p) + (1000*1p) = 14,000p or £140 !!!

Life would be £5.95 :confused::confused:

Have I missed anything !
Stompa
8 May 16 2 #95
No, but if you really are a light user then Three may still work out cheaper. For example, if you were to make a single 1 minute call, send 1 text and use 1MB data per month it would cost just 6p rather than £5.95. You need to work out what your likely usage might be.

Don't forget £100 of the £140 is for text messages alone. I somehow doubt that you'd be able to use 5000 a month though, as it equates to about 1 every 6 minutes, 16 hours a day, every day.

From 3's site...

Shortcodes can be used to pay for certain types of services, like entering TV competitions or voting on reality shows, through your monthly phone bill or balance.

They are a series of numbers, usually around five digits long, which you can call or text to access services which aren't covered by your normal allowances.

The following types of services are normally accessed by shortcodes:

sending messages to radio stations
calling into video chat services
making low cost calls to international numbers
downloading games to your phone
entering TV competitions
voting in TV reality shows
charity donations.
You can buy text services as either one-off purchases or by setting up regular subscription using shortcodes.

...I didn't know what these were either

Guys, please proceed with caution. Would like to comment on OUR experience. I switched the wife over two months ago and am going through complete hell! The number was eventually ported over but am having issues with people trying to call and send messages to her. Basically not able to receive any calls or texts. Only through wifi using apps. She's able to call but that's it!! Have called them twice and we are still waiting for them to sort things out after so long. Customer service is okay if you get the right person to help you, but they have not resolved the problem! They keep fobbing us off with excuses and telling us they're testing./monitoring the network etc. I wish I hadn't told her to switch!!! Will be on at them again in the morning, if no joy then unfortunately will be cancelling. We got the 6 pounds per month, with 1500 mins, unlmtd txts, and 1 gb data deal. We have never had so much trouble when switching from one network to another.
Not impressed!!
