Hi guys,

Saw this in Vodafone Camden and thought that it may be a good deal for a brand new phone.

Well its quite simple without wanting to sound sarcastic. If you have a phone with a removable battery such as a G4 and you find you are using a lot of battery life because of your personal usage then just buy a spare battery. Genuine kits are cheap for the G4. Comparison to S6 and S7 was a dig at their brand because you can't do that with them. I can leave my G4 on all day for 3 days minimum without having to charge it. I have a spare battery for mine just in case. I last charged the spare up 4 weeks ago and needed it on Sunday. It had dropped 3% in a month. I leave everything on apart from facebook, location, bluetooth and weather is set NOT to automatically update. If you facebook and location running on your phone it will seriously drain, especially facebook.

It always makes me laugh when people say they can't get a day out of their phone without charging it. I suppose I am lucky that I only use my phone on an evening because the rest of the day I am working and my boss pays me to work for him and not sit playing games on my phone or updating facebook. Not saying you do this of course and I guess people who have more free time will be using their battery more but for me even if I didn't work I think I would be finding more useful things to do than play with my phone all day.

This is not meant to be a sarcastic or dig at anyone. Posts can sometimes come across as a bit direct but battery usage is all down to that, usage. The more you have going on the quicker it will drain. For 8 hours a day I am sleeping. For 8 hours a day I am working. That's 16 hours a day that my phone is sat on standby unless I receive a text or call whilst at work. For a couple hours in the evening I will certainly be eating and catching up on other things needing to be done in the house. That leaves maybe 6 hours max that I could use my phone. I prefer to use my laptop or tab for emails and surfing as what is the point in looking at a 5.5" screen when I can view via a 10" or 17" screen. Its just easier. All in all my personal usage of my phone will be a bout 2 hours a day so that's probably a good reason why my battery life is so good.

I don't need a smartphone but what I do need is a device that will take decent pictures for work which I can easily upload to my PC for work use. That's why I bought the G4 not for it's smart abilities, but for it's camera. Second to none in my opinion.

I know there has been some hardware issues with many G4's. If you get a good one, I think this is a Hot Deal. I'm still rocking the G2 and its excellent for the money I paid.

My friend bought the LG G2 when Vodafone did their deal on it a while back. They never did take the money for it.

They took my £150 for the G2 a few years ago. It's been worth every single penny and still performs like it did on day 1 and I still get about 50 hours of battery with 2 hours of screen on time. :sunglasses:

The G4 was available last year for the same price. It was a hot deal then and its still a hot deal now.

I bought my Mother one of those on the black friday deal - I called into the Voda store late in the afternoon, assuming that they'd have long since sold out. I asked the guy who was working there what time they sold the last one and was given a dilemma when he said there was one left! Being a sucker for a bargain I figured it would be a great upgrade for my Mother and, for well over a year, my 65 year old Mother had a better phone than me! I liked the G2 so much that I was going to get the G3 till I saw how bad it's battery life was, and then the same for this - unless the 6.0 update has sorted that? (I get between 4 and 6 hours s.o.t. on my Note 3)

I doubt the G4 can compete with the G2 or Note 3 with respect to battery life. On the other hand, if you are a light user like me, the G4 should be able to make use of the doze feature in Android 6. If you're a power user, maybe look elsewhere.

19 May 16 1 #7
Yeah, I could've picked up a used G4 for £160 earlier in the week but the battery life was the killer - it's such a shame as the phone ticks the rest of the boxes!

I'm toying with putting a custom ROM on the Note 3 to get hold of MM for doze etc, but it depends on the associated issues at the mo. If it works then I'll stick with the Note 3 for a few years, maybe waiting for the Note 6 to come down in price (if they do as expected and go back to the sd slot and removable battery) as the Note 5 is a no-go for me with the lack of a removable battery. But in the meantime, if one of the big Chinese companies brings something out that works for me, I'm all for giving that a try!

Don't forget you can put a spare battery in a G4 unlike an S6 or S7. Battery life is pretty good on these to be honest. The more you use it and the more apps you have running the quicker the battery drains. Quite a simple science really. Ditch Facebook and you will be surprised how much longer your battery will last.

Anyone buying one of these make sure the first three numbers of the serial number is 510 or higher. If it a 509 508 507 506 or 505 then chances are the motherboard will fail on you.

Yes but there hasn't been much availability and the phone is no longer listed in the Vodafone shop for PAYG or contract.

Still a good deal and cheaper than elsewhere but one that few are likely to find in store.

I bought one of these last year when they first when sub £300 (normally around august for the g series), and whilst it's not perfect, battery life was never a particular concern. Always got me through the day as a moderate user.

I got the G2 on the Voda deal of 2014, was happy with it but noticed slow-down with Lollipop. Got the G4 for this price a few weeks ago, excellent phone b v fast... even better, the G2 fetched 100 quid on eBay which offset what i paid for the G4 somewhat.

I'm not quite sure you got what I was saying - why mention an S6 or 7 - and their lack of a removable battery and then mention that this has a removable battery when it's obvious that that is a prerequisite of mine? What is the maximum sot you get with the G4?

I know how a battery drains and I've a pretty good idea of how to limit it - my phone's rooted and running xposed with Greenify and Amplify as well as All-in-one-toolbox. They hibernate apps, restrict wakelocks and stop apps loading up at boot. I think that's a little more effective than just binning facebook (it was using very little battery when I had it installed as it only ran when I wanted to access it).

The long and the short of it is the G4's battery life isn't great, but it's a step up on the balls-up they did with the G3's terrible drain.

All in One Toolbox looks suspiciously like a task killer, it proudly demonstrates it's capacity to free up your RAM, but that's what you don't want to be doing for the most part with Android. I've used Greenify but not Amplify, I'll have a look at that. I have a lot more time now that I gave up rooting, modding and generally messing about with my phone, a lot more time! My battery runs down faster but all I have to do is charge it, not tweak and tweak and break and fix and tweak some more.

I'm not replying directly to the last comment as i dont want to end up trading up the entire thread! This seems to have gone rather off topic. I previously merely stated that the G4 is known to have relatively poor battery life. This can be influenced by usage but the fact remains that under controlled conditions when this phone has been tested, the battery has not performed well.
Smartguy, the phone that I'm talking about is the same "brand" as that which you've said that you can't replace the battery in - Samsung Galaxy Note 3.
As you state, you don't need a smartphone and it appears that you don't stress the phone in the slightest, so pretty much any phone would give you "good" battery life, if it's on standby for 16 hours a day. Having 2 periods a day where you are not using the phone, surely a quickcharge capable phone would suffice, instead of a removable battery?
As for the camera, which other phones have you been able to use to compare it to? I've not used one so I can't pass judgement, but purely based on reviews there are phones like the Note 5, G5, S6&7, Nexus 6s that all appear to perform better. But each to their own.
It's a shame about the battery life and reliability issues have impacted on what could have been a stellar phone

19 May 16 #17
If you just the one touch optimisation then yes, but if you go into tools, "boot speed-up" up you can control which apps load on boot, including system apps (be careful). It's one of the few free apps that allows this

19 May 16 #18
still the best phone available hands down. You can pick one up on eBay less than £200 ! find me a better smart phone camera with excellent manual controls ?!?!?! had lots of new phones this year but save your money and get this which will be better.

Hmm, well how about the G5 for starters? Or the S7? Or Note 5?
As for going on xda, do you have a link to a specific thread to prove your point? What do you get by way of sot? Surely posting facts is more helpfulto other users on here than just opinions? How much had the MM update improved the battery? Things like that are much more constructive than name calling

19 May 16 #19
battery is also excellent since I have had the phone so if anyone saying it's not is talking utter bs.. just go view xda developers of you for believe me.

I own this phone. Battery life is as good as anything else I've owned - better than the HTC One M8 I had before it (although that was admittedly crap).

Got a nice Qi wireless charging Quickcircle case off Amazon for it a couple of weeks ago as well.

oh dear. do I really need to go into why note 5 is not as good for me I did have one and also an s7e and wife has an s7. ok note 5 can't even compete with no sd card or removable battery, no double tap to wake, no paste and clip tray which keeps your last 10 copy and pasted items in memory along with several other such useful things. s7e I had one from very deal and sent it back... go find a screen protector for that phone. the curves just reflect light all the time so it's not great for watching films. note 6 will probably be my next phone. can't comment on g5 but reviews are quite bad overall. I can comment on the above phones because I have owned them and my comments are backed up by my experience with the devices . here is the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3114153 you could look yourself.
