I had the original New York lock from Kryptonite bought 10+ years ago iirc. I don't know where I bought it from nor what I did with the receipt but it failed this year (rusty lock mechanism). I remembered it being advertised with a lifetime warranty (as well it should for the price) so I completed the online warranty form hopeful but not expecting much.

It took this one email to Kryptonite with a photo of the lock and keys and they sent me a replacement (like for like - the current New York lock) without any hassle. I wasn't asked to produce the receipt or return the original or pay postage.

Excellent customer service.

As for the lock itself, I can't comment on this model but my bike was never stolen (so I presume the lock worked) and the company stood by their lifetime warranty so I'm pleased with them overall. Heat for the price.

Not to pick too big a hole in your post, but you're wrong.

These are a newer design that use a flat key rather than the circular one in the video. They also have the key hole in a different location.

Oh I agree, a bottle jack causes new problems but most won't be carrying one. Always best to use a variety of lock types if your bike is worth stealing, that said some crack heads in Rhyl still went for our bikes that were worth maybe 4k between the 5. Luckily we spotted them from the pub we were eating in, unluckily they had a mate in a car to get them out quick. Very nearly had one though, got a decent kick in as he climbed in but the fecker got away.

What was odd was they hadn't touched the D locks and instead took the two cables out first, neither cable really secured anything worthwhile, they were just extra loops through bikes already secured. Even if they'd severed both no bike would move, at best they'd steal a few wheels.

Been this price the last couple of months. Got one as part of a Cycle2Work order as there's £800 of cover included once you register.

I had an older version purchased in 2011.

Few things I noticed:

1) The new locking strap isn't as difficult to fit as some online reviews make out - although this may be a revision 2 design. The strap itself is more than secure to the frame, unfortunately the lock does have a tendency to rattle in it.

2) It's much more difficult to attach the lock to the locking strap than the old design.

3) It's also more difficult to get the key in the lock mechanism. I've sprayed some WD40 Specialist Dry PTFE in there but it's not as easy as the one it's replaced.

4) The carrier bolt for the new locking strap isn't compatible with the old design. I believe you can buy new carrier bolts and/or straps, but they're more or less the price of another of these locks.

I'm reasonably happy with it and I've now just got a different lock attached to the frame of both of my bikes, but just thought this might help some people out if they've had previous experience with Kryptonite locks.

I was "just saying" that your original statement did not include the later clause that they come back and snip your lock - someone who just superglues locks isn't, by my reasoning a thief, but if they come back and do as you say they are. But I am grateful to have learnt the scam and will endeavour to grease my locks from now on.

Stick with your chain and decent lock, iv owned a few d locks their crap, they either smash them of with a lump hammer an chisel or wedge a car jack in middle of the d

Its worth contacting them to see.

I know the New York comes with a lifetime warranty. I'm not sure about their other products. The form you need is on the website, it's all very straight-forward.

I explained about my lock sticking and said I had tried the various fixes posted on the site without success. Like you my key broke (but not the spare) so I said this and sent off the form with the attached images.

I'm really impressed with them. I think good customer service deserves recognition and they definately provided that.
afroylnt to Iconcur
6 May 16 #48
For d-lock you need to try and make sure that there is not much spare space in the D so they can't get a car jack etc in the middle.

Couple of scary you tube videos on how quickly a chain lock can be broken admittedly with sizeable bolt cutters.

If the chain / lock is kept off the ground then I think it will be harder to smash as well.

best bet is to park your bike next to a nice bike with a lower spec lock / chain...

The problems I have had with these locks are the metal ends which have chiped away some paints on the bike frame, by hitting them accidentially on it when putting them on.

I had a key snap inside my Kryptonite Lock and rendered it pretty much useless (and took an entire day of looking like I was trying to steal my own bike!) but I've just left it sitting in the house since, but I think I'll contact Kryptonite now from reading your comment. So thanks.

I have read elsewhere that if you want to try to stop scumbags super gluing locks etc, for whatever reason they do it! The only answer is to try to make it hard for them by using Vaseline or some other grease filling lock/keyholes any cavities, moving parts etc and regularly re grease them and be quite liberal with the grease, when I go biking I make sure I have a small tub of Vaseline and several pairs of disposable gloves plus keep any lock Key's in a plastic bag to reduce getting Vaseline on unwanted things, it's a lot of faffing but I think it's worth it!

Hi Guys, I been using a chained (covered in rubber) Kryptonite few a couple of years now but leave my Bike in a fairly secure location.

This week I joined a gym (have to my surprise actually attended x3 times this week) and the Bike is in a very bike parking rack. I notice everyone else is using a D-Lock along with cable/chain for the wheel.

I'm wondering whether I should upgrade to a D-Lock or whether my existing Kryptonite is enough of a deteerent.

Any thoughts? Cheers

This is very true. I have really got into cycling over the last 2 years since quitting smoking and have gained a huge amount of lung capacity back. It's one of the few things I passionately enjoy even though it's exercise. I can honestly say I've lost considerably more weight off of my body than what the lock weighs so I don't mind carrying one if it means piece of mind for leaving my bike somewhere.

The only criticism with this lock is that mine started failing after a while and it was taking a lot of key shaking to get it undone and its worrying not knowing if the lock will completely fail one day with bike attached. Great price though!
wantsomepls
6 May 16 #29
Decent lock, should suffice for most users and be a suitable deterrent for most bike thieves. I think the point of the cable is to secure the wheels as well as the frame, which on some bikes will be worth nicking on their own. Evans seem to do it at this price every so often.

And yes it is heavy and awkward to carry around. Which is why I don't.

Is this another lock which weighs almost as much as your bike? You spend hundreds to save a few grams on the bike itself and then lug one of these around. Hasn't anyone come up with a lightweight solution?
drnkbeer
6 May 16 #21
I assume he's stating that say you take your bike to work, an opportunistic thief will superglue the lock and toddle off. You finish at 5 and you can't get your bike unlocked so you have to leave it. The thief however will come back later (in the dead of night) break the lock off and have away with your bike. The thief doesn't necessarily have to steal the bike there and then, but he knows if he glues the lock you're not going to be taking it home (at least not likely)

Good price, but keep in mind this is Sold Secure Level 6. That's equivalent to Silver (silver is levels 6-10, bronze is 1-5, gold is 11-15). Some insurance companies will insist on a gold rating for bikes over a certain value. This should be ok for bikes up to a value of 2k (which is probably for most of us). There are tougher locks out there (usually in a matter of minutes). A determined thief with the right gear can get through any of them, it's just that they'll likely pick the bike with the easiest lock to break.

Sentencing error: thieves can break through pretty much any lock in a matter of minutes (was what I was trying to say!).

Just be aware the cable is just for extra protection, not to be the main securing point. It can be got through in no time with a pair of snips, so make sure the main lock immobilises the bike.

Good lock. Paid similar money around 3 years ago.
Frame attachment isn't the best. But I leave mine at work anyway.
Not the most secure lock. But as long as your bike isn't left exposed for too long should be sufficient deterrent for the opportunistic type of thief.
sput2001
6 May 16 1 #13
It's a decent lock, and yes, it has a holder to attach it to your frame.

It's worth Googling the video on how to attach the frame holder, it's not massively obvious to the newbie.
