Probably due to the continued destabilising effect of geopolitically inspired radical Islamic terrorism in those particular cities.

The prevalence of ammunition and weaponry in the Belgian capital makes it a centre of gravity for the logistical network used by terrorists and supplied by criminal elements.

However, since those same capitals sit at the heart of the European continent they also represent massive population centres, important business districts and recognised political institutions.

The large through flow of European citizens lead to an equally large infrastructure network designed to service travellers which simultaneously, and logically becomes a prime target for terrorist disruption.

So, the financial incentives are designed to combat waning use of the network due to fear of further terrorist reprisals for perceived injustices by the West against their particular ideology, which, interestingly enough, is actually Qutbism.

Really want to do this but seems like it's going to cost more and be more hassle to get from the south west to St Pancras than to go from there across France!

Train to Paddington then trying to get across London to St Pancras with suitcase etc?
National express don't drop off anywhere near...
Car parking nearby very expensive!

9 May 16 #23
Thanks, that sounds the cheapest option so far and doesn't sound like a total pain. Have you done that?

Looks like it could be better to get a Eurostar that stops at Ebbsfleet and drive there actually, £39 for a weeks parking and less messing about... A 2.5-4 hour drive, depending on M25, before a long train journey doesn't sound fun though :disappointed:

Thing is, certainly with Amsterdam (I can't speak for the others personally) it's entirely possible to get a "silly" priced £70 return on a plane. Considering journey time is about 50 minutes vs something like 3-4 hours I don't really consider it worthwhile. I guess if you like slow paced and find rail travel "romantic" or something..?

In fact - not even that silly. Easyjet from machester/london to Amsterdam mid week, middle of June is about £50 return each.

Depends how far you are from the airport, you need to factor in that time. also the check in time, the fact that flying isn't particular nice, no restrictions on liquids on the train, travel from the destination airport into the city. For a train journey of 3/4 hours door to door, there probably isn't much in it.

He wouldn't.

The primary motivation for the distortion of Islam is the sword verses much quoted in Qutbism. Fifth Verse, Ninth Sura.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sword_Verse

Wahhabism, while pretty barbaric, is just the underpinnings of extreme Islam not necessarily terrorism, it is the teachings of Sayyid Qutb which inspire and justify much of terrorist action and violence.

An analogy might be you can be an extreme Christian (no vaccination, hate healthcare, won't accept homosexuality) but it takes a violent turn to bomb an abortion clinic.

That's the difference between Wahhabism and Qutbism. The majority of future terrorists, educated in backwater madrassah's are taught a very narrow version of the Quran, which is written in a language they cannot read.

Not unlike Anglo Saxons centuries ago have a Latin bible "read to them" by a pastor.

The Brussels attackers were hardly Muslims, the ran a bar and had been in prison for robbery.

Seemed like they were just **** off with Belgian racism and police harassment.

And we all know who arms, trains and funds Al-CIAda terrorists
Your text here

In their countries they are fighting against the terrorists who are on the fringes of society there. Here in the UK, we let terrorists like Tony Blair and Ca-moron run the country, and put the military and and money in their hands, and no one bats an eyelid.

Western Christian extremist fundamentalist neo-con Zionist terrorism is a far more dangerous for us and the world. It is like Nazi Germany, where another terrorist made Europe a bad place to live after he took power.

Yep, Eurostarred to Brussels last week. No issues in or outside the station or all the other bits of the city I visited. Guess I must have scared them all away.

On a negative note I came back on one of the refurbished trains with wifi. Except it is rather selective on what websites it will connect to and it looks like the code is being filtered. Unsafe.Well its either that or BBC News got listed as a porn/terrorist site. Maybe erpetao is their SysAdmin?

We seem to have a forum full of conspiracists here! Eurostar have ALWAYS had sale on since its introduction... Not suddenly! I originally booked a trip from Birmingham to Paris (via London) for £77 and I wanted to stay longer but the fare had gone up but thankfully, they sent an email promoting a sale - so I phoned up and changed it for the day I want and the exact time and no extra fee as there wasn't a price difference... Be quick with these offers, when you see a good deal, book it immediately because they literally go like hotcakes.
(If any of you ask why I'm not flying -- it's because door-to-door, flying isn't quicker from Birmingham. It's about the same, and it is much more enjoyable by train than flying, and I'm an avid aviation geek!)
patrick_000
11 May 16 #72
I feel sorry for Eurostar - I've read their passenger numbers have been heavily hit by the attacks and are currently making staff redundant. I went to Paris with them recently on one of their new trains and had a great time there - nothing seemed out of the ordinary there to me. The only thing I found annoying was the onboard free wifi didn't work at all in France.

Mekdad referred to recent BBC Newsnight revelations about a 2012 plan by the Ministry of Defence to train a 100,000-strong rebel force to fight Assad's forces. "We knew that the UK was deeply involved in all the attacks and crimes that were committed in Syria," he said. "We are sure that there are more revelations which will show how deep was the involvement of the UK government."
