Some people are just so obnoxious about product choices. They think that because they make particular choices that everyone who doesn't make the same choice or apply the same reasoning is stupid. We see this with smartphone threads, car threads and, unfortunately, with threads such as these.

The people on here who are berating Windows users fall into the obnoxious category above.

The reality is that people make choices either based on what they want, what they need or what they know.

Linux is not a new operating system. Yet, it is nowhere near as popular as Windows and Mac OS, both of which generally carry a premium, directly or indirectly. That in itself says a lot not only about consumers but also the product and/or its developers/promoters.

Someone mentioned earlier that most computer users are "clueless". The reality is that most people who use a computer aren't computer experts; they don't need to be. Is everyone who drives a car a motor racing driver or needs to be? A car is a tool, just as a computer. One idiot said something about "what a laptop is supposed to be used for". Really? That's like saying a car is supposed to be used for taking you to work... A truly dumb statement! A car or a laptop is "supposed" to be used for however the owner intended, as long as it complies with legal regulations.

Linux is a wonderful operating system but so is Mac OS and so is Windows in the opinions of those who favour either.

As for this deal, personally, I think it's a good one but I wouldn't try to tell anyone on this thread what they should do with it if they bought it because who am I? Just another stranger who doesn't know any other person's on here individual needs, wants or thought patterns. Why the heck then should Linux-only advocates berate persons considering installing Windows on it? After all, don't people install Linux on PCs that came with Windows?

Sheesh...

Hi kowalski,

Yes I used the downloaded iso from Microsoft website on a USB stick. Just booted from that and installed to the windows drive. I skipped the entry of the key on installation and windows 10 automatically activated anyway (windows 7 was already activated before I installed windows 10).

Both, (current ITO HPE employee so probably not for much longer...:stuck_out_tongue: )

Yes all HP/HPE laptops ship with Windows but If you dig around on HP Intranet you will find that there is a Linux distro available for use by staff if you don't need any Windows specific applications. I had it running myself for a month or so on a spare laptop but sadly I need access to some Windows only apps so day to day I have to run Windows.

Yes winchman, I'm very happy with the machine now and seems like great value for the spec. I had a Windows 7 license from a dead PC so I re-used it on this laptop. This updated to Windows 10 and activated fine. The only issue I had was the Windows 7 updates which were stuck at 0% (left overnight). I then noticed that Win 10 had the option to install without updating Win 7 so that's what I did. All of the Win 10 updates happened fine after installation and I then applied a few of the updated Win 10 drivers from HP's site e.g. AMD Graphics drivers.

It's all running fine now and seems pretty speedy even running from HDD so the SSD should make it even better.

I have nothing against Ubuntu by the way, in fact I quite like it although I prefer Mint. It seemed to work fine (even the wifi) before I updated to Win 10. I just needed the laptop for Windows apps.

By the way, not sure if I said already but voted hot and thanks winchman :sunglasses:

As you say feels a nice laptop, its why i said about getting one of these as opposed to a HP 250, which is rather more basic. Yeah takes a while, but sounds like you are on the right track. No harm in keeping a Linux operating system on the hard drive as well though.

I have received mine and I am in the process of updating it to Windows 10. I have Windows 7 running fine on it and I am just waiting for it to do all the updates which Windows 10 insists on before updating. From what I have read it could take a few hours to do all the updates before doing the Windows 10 update.

Overall the it seems like a great value laptop. The screen is fine and it has the laptop has a quality feel to it with the brushed metal finish. Windows 7 gave it a performance index of 4.8 which isn't too shabby. I plan to replace the HDD with an SSD from another machine and move the included 1Tb HDD to the optical drive slot using something like this caddy.

Please do your research properly before giving out inaccurate information.
The completely binary fglrx drivers are being deprecated by AMD the AMDGPU drivers are an open source kernel module which will make it easier for AMD and anyone developing against the kernel mainline to integrate basic functionality for 2D/3D. A proprietary binary only addition callled AMDGPU-PRO which will give you the full 3D experience if you need it.

I hate to break it to you but we're no longer in the late 1990s or very early 2000s when laptops were "trending". Laptops these days are commodity items. Many mainstream laptops come better equipped than many desktops, simply because laptops are more portable than desktops and therefore enjoy better sales. Furthermore, as space becomes more on a concern, many people will sensibly buy a laptop since they don't need to then buy a monitor for it.

The "trend" has more been towards people buying and using smartphones and tablets. This is as a result of further portability compared with laptops. In maybe 5 years or even less, expect to see laptops become like desktops: less important.

To further counter what in my opinion is a tunnel visioned view of laptops (and operating systems), I'm typing this message on a 13" laptop that runs 16GB RAM and a few VMs under Clilent Hyper-V. I also know many technology consultants with laptops running 32GB RAM, who run Exchange and other products they consult on via VMs. They take their laptops to client engagements and are able to demonstrate, troubleshoot or test product functionality on their laptiops.

Sure, the people you generally referred to are non-power users but tell me who exactly decides what a laptop is to be used for and who decides what operating system is better for each person? I've used UNIX, Linux, DOS, Windows 3.0 - 10, Mac OS, VMS and more throughout my career yet the OS family I use most often is Windows, partially because I need to and partially because I want to. Stick to Linux and be happy but don't berate others for not making the same choices.

When I first tried Ubuntu late 2014 I couldn't believe how slick and fast it was compared to Windoze 7, my laptop was SO much faster and stayed that way too! Yes there was a bit of a learning curve having to command line most things but it wasn't that bad. Updates download and install in a flash whereas Windoze would take forever just to install a few updates even from a fresh install. I have since moved to Mint 17.3 from 17.2 about 6 months or so ago. All in all Linux is very much for me, I don't play games so there's no loss there.

With Windoze my laptop fan was ALWAYS on the go for no obvious reason, with Ubuntu and Mint all is calm no matter what I do. Windoze is slow, clunky and basically a crapfest which made computing a chore. So glad I tried Linux.

My machine is an Asus K53E 6gb RAM, i7 proc bla bla bla which Windoze slowed it to a crawl even with a new installation. Linux however flies on it and never slows down no matter what. Its dual boot and I've only booted Windoze twice in all the time I've used Linux, once was to upgrade to W10 to give it a chance but W10 doesn't like dual boot machines with Linux on it seems, there are workarounds with a lot of faff but I decided it wasn't worth the effort, if M$ can't be bothered to sort their stuff out for dual boot machines then that's up to them. Windoze is dead for me, I've only left W7 on it so when I come to sell my laptop one day it'll be there for the new owner.

I have a HP A8 7100 laptop, one down from this one and it runs the latest games at the minimum setting at the low 720p resolution of the laptop screen and runs earlier games very well. Very pleased with its gaming performance and this one is a step up from mine in performance slightly. Seems like a nice little entry level gaming laptop with a windows 7 license available from play asia for about £12 which can be upgraded to windows 10 for free. However if you don't game I'd probably recommend something like a celeron laptop. My mother's celeron laptop is getting something like 9 hours use on one charge. Brilliant and fine for all non gaming uses. Those are similar or less money to this. This A10 laptop will need 2 banks of memory to get maximum performance. I.e. 2x4GB will perform faster for games than 1x8GB as the apu benefits from as much memory bandwidth as possible for gaming.

I have 3 HP laptops and two HP Chromebooks. None of them has developed a single hardware issue.

As for Ubuntu, you can use it from a live USB stick plugged into a Windows machine so why bother tying yourself to Ubuntu by having that as the main OS c/w the frequent wi-fi disconnects it suffers from? I like Ubuntu but it's no use to me without a reliable internet connection which I couldn't manage to achieve with it. Get Windows, install HostsMan, block any and all "spyware" sites Microsoft has your PC calling home to and you have the safest, fastest Windows since Windows 7 which will lose official support and updates pretty soon I imagine. You can always run windows, install a virtual box and run any system you like (almost), or you can dual/multi boot into one of a choice of systems. I hope Ubuntu Wi-Fi problems are resolved eventually. Would like to see what it's fully capable of but the disconnects meant I gave up on it after a few days.

Why do you consider it a necessity to install Windows? What you're advising is that people make the machine practically useless by installing an inferior operating system
1) Software Compatility & choice
2) If you know Windows then its far easier to use than ubuntu.
Linux etc is known to be problematic for drivers though one assumes this would ship with all the required drivers.
zidnrfhwvbytk
27 May 16 #42
Looks like installed Ubuntu Linux is obsolete and installing never version will mess up Wifi connectivity.
As reported by one of the buyers: "You can only upgrade if you know what you're doing as otherwise the WIFI won't work unless you know how to tweak linux kernel parameters...".
Moreover if you want to update Ubuntu from shipped 12.04 LTS for the newest 16.04 LTS you can forget about drivers for graphics card. (Source: http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2016/03/ubuntu-drops-amd-catalyst-fglrx-driver-16-04).

I was keen to buy this laptop and give Linux a go. But it looks like you cannot do without Windows. So buying this machine for 199 with prospect of spending extra on Windows just to make it useable is no longer good deal for me.

I have things called games too, 443 of them on my Steam on Arch Linux right now. If a game hasn't been ported to Linux then I'm not going to buy it because my freedom is more important to me than some game that at the end of the day is going to waste time I could be spending on better things anyway. Maybe you'd rather have a shiny game than your freedom but in my opinion that's just cowardice, stand up for yourself.

This is a laptop though, it's not for gaming or everyday use. Which is good because in this case, this laptop has AMD graphics so if you want the proprietary driver, enjoy having to keep kernel and xorg packages at older versions while AMD get around to releasing updates.

Although many people use laptops for everyday use these days you shouldn't, it's really bad for your posture. I don't understand why so many people want to sit hunched over a low powered machine rather than using a proper desktop computer.

Let's consider what a laptop should really be used for, occasional web browsing, email, documents etc while out of the house. Since the majority of computer users these days are clueless about what they're actually doing but insist on using a computer anyway because it's apparently cool and trendy now, they're better off with things like Firefox, Thunderbird and Libre Office on Linux because it's safer for them, it's also easier to provide support because you can just give them commands to paste in and contrary to what people think, everything that a normal user would ever need to do can be done from a GUI in Linux, it's just that we have a CHOICE, I know that might be a very unusual concept to Windows and Mac users but it's actually a good thing.

If you're having occasional wifi disconnects on this laptop, try this (even on Ubuntu):
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wireless_network_configuration#rtl8723ae.2Frtl8723be

Ah SUSE...used to use that years ago, only distro that made KDE look like it wasn't themed by a child.

Why Outlook? It's bloated and horrible as is Exchange server, installed that for someone once, takes up 15gb+ of disk space? For a mail server? I laughed hard. Try mutt for a mail client

I had to use a Mac once, at first I didn't know what to do, needed a text editor then I remembered it has a Unix-ish kernel so I opened a terminal and tried vi...it worked, it has vi, tried more commands, many worked. Why pay for it? Overpriced hardware and gives you less freedom of choice than Windows.

Don't know what Automator is but it sounds something like cron, knowing Mac, a heavily over-complicated, over-priced version of cron. Cron (or lack of) is one reason I'd never use Windows.

"People" aren't suggesting Arch, I am, I'm only one person. 16.04 probably has the kernel modules for the wifi now, for the moments it has, see my link earlier in this post.

Arch has a very good and very easy to follow guide and the advantage of it is, you'll learn a lot about Linux and computers in general just by following that guide. Shocked that I'd suggest such a thing? You wouldn't hop into a car and drive around without gaining knowledge of how to operate it would you? A computer should be no different. If real Arch is too much for you, there's distros based on it, Archbang is one I remember, maybe Manjaro?

Ubuntu isn't so user-friendly when the new version comes out and you have to reinstall just like Windows...or chance it with their often flakey upgrade script. They've also collaborated with Microsoft recently in a way that I consider to be going too far, can't trust them.

i presume so as it states windows 10 activated with digital entitlement on both units.

I bought the HP 255 which is very similar to this but a slightly lesser spec. Basically - they're decent laptops but let down by a poor decision to go with AMD graphics. Ubuntu has stopped shipping with the proprietary AMD drivers which means that you'll be using open-source AMD drivers. Whilst they'll still be ok - they wont have the benefits of proprietary drivers e.g lower temperature etc.

I am shocked that people are suggesting to install Arch - Arch is absolutely not a beginner's distro. Unless you want to learn how linux works from the ground up, what's the point? Ubuntu is a solid distro with good (not excellent) support via the community.

Regarding wifi issues - I can only speak for the 255 i've got. After upgrading to 16.04 LTS, it seems to work ok. It has its moments, but to be honest, i've never found Linux particularly stable when it comes to wifi. My current Ubuntu-based PC has issues with wifi and sometimes I have to revert to the CLI to fix it - not something that your average, web-surfing user wants to do.

My advice? Buy this if you want a cheap way of getting to learn Linux. If you're wanting to use a reliable PC which works with lots more software and you don't want to be troubleshooting with the command line or tinkering about, stick with Windows.

Steam and 1000s of its games are available for linux now.

From Microsoft:

Microsoft is making Windows 10 available as a free upgrade for compatible devices that are running genuine Windows 7 Service Pack 1 or Windows 8.1 Update.

The free upgrade offer isn’t available for devices running Windows XP, Windows Vista or Enterprise editions of Windows.

Totally agree with you Dar72. Use different flavours of linux in work but mostly suse 11.3 for our CAM software. I have a work PC running Win 10 which i only use for outlook and run Debian in virtualbox for all my main important tasks, but, I do have a mac pro now which is my own personal machine so jump on there lots and really like its ease of use for everyday tasks and like what can be achieved with Apple Script and Automator but for sheer power then its linux all the way.

I do have a windows 10 laptop at home but all i use that for is to play Diablo III when im really bored......once you get familiar with the terminal you will wonder why you ever used windoze.

Voted HOT just as it has a linux flavour to it....

That's you. I have these things called games which require Windows 10, not got any other options.
xela333
27 May 16 2 #19

That's not how it works. You need a valid licence of Windows 7 or up to upgrade for free.

I'm biased towards freedom

I have more software than I could ever need available to me on Linux and all of it can be installed via one simple command rather than having to trawl the Internet for exes. Don't get me started on Mac...

I use Linux, OSX and Windows 10. You're biased towards Linux. I agree Linux is good, however there are advantages to having Windows 10 such as software support. I don't personally like Windows 10 that much, Windows 7 is stable and if I had to use Windows it would be that OS.
dar72
27 May 16 1 #16
Or just put Arch on it and stop messing about with versioned distros. I have one, removed Ubuntu straight away and put Arch on it which works without wifi issues, maybe Ubuntu just needs to catch up (not surprising)

Shame it has AMD graphics, makes you wonder if the people at HP that selected the hardware have ever actually used Linux

Why would you willingly install malware on a brand new laptop?

Why do you consider it a necessity to install Windows? What you're advising is that people make the machine practically useless by installing an inferior operating system

I've had 3 HP laptops, and a Compaq (made by HP) and the mobo has overheated on all of them. 2 just within warranty, and two just outside. No chance I'm touching another.

The catch is it's not got windows installed, battery life isn't brilliant and the wi-fi is spotty with the installed version of Ubuntu.

If you're happy installing a copy of windows and understand that it's a budget laptop, then I'd say it's a bargain. At least it won't come with any pre-installed junkware.

This one? The Ubuntu is a G2, the £250 one is a newer model the G3, this doesn't have DVD slot and is a bit slimmer.

If you're quick you can buy a windows 7 Pro licence key from a scrap computer and upgrade it for free to Win 10 if Linux isn't your thing. I got mine for a tenner from a company that's been around for 5 years and they sent me the Win 7 holographic sticker through the mail

Shame about the battery life, but looks ideal apart for a nippy laptop apart from that! Looks like theres a bunch of wifi issues and HP's linux support is less than stella though.
