Excellent deal for a great printer. Replacement inks are cheap compared to others. A multifunction printer comes in a Used-Very Good condition from Amazon. The box maybe slightly damaged but from previous experiance the items are practically brand new. This printer retails at £150 elsewhere.

We have one of these in the office. Very good. Prints and scan everything up to A3. MDF performs well and can get through a good stack of paper. Printing and scanning duplex mode too which might be useful to some.
I get compatible inks very cheaply from eBay and they seem to last a long enough time. When you install the compatibles the printer does throw up a warning that you're not using genuine ones but you just tap on the screen to proceed past it and all is well. Updating the firmware has not affected this so update without worry.
I keep the firmware up to date because I'm hoping that they're going to fix an issue where occasionally the scanner can't be found on a Mac (printer features function as normal). Wireless or ethernet connection; it happens the same but a power cycle of the printer and computer generally solves it. I have assigned static ip to unit but doesn't fix it.
I know the deal has expired by now but thought this information might be useful to someone.

Does anyone know if the scanner function can be used when the inks are empty?
Common sense would suggest that it would but I've had a multifunction printer that wouldn't do any non-printing functions until I bought replacement ink. I don't want that happening again ,

that's a good question as I have an old epson at the moment and I can't use the scan when inks are empty however I usually find epson the be reliable and cost-effective so I'm taking the punt lol

Does it need specific software/firmware to use cheap compatible inks?

not that I'm aware... I use aftermarket ink in my old epson printer and aftermarket inks are readily available on ebay
