Don't just hang these from a tree, they need to be 4ft+ up on an East facing wall (morning sun)
I just used some old blocks of mahogany I had (the holes end up neater than pine) with loads of 4mm and 8mm holes in it. For the past few days it's been absolutely swarming with bees making their nests. :smiley:
Looks alarming but they just get on with what they're doing. You just have to remember to close your mouth as you walk past. :smile:
EDIT: Video looks a bit squashed, wide one is about 2ft wide by 6" tall, other one is about 1" tall. These have been up over the last two winters and provided shelter from all the rain.

I've heard of hanging out the odd bag of nuts etc. for the birds and squirrels but having a Hotel for insects :confused:,
How's one meant to sit out in their own garden at the best of times being pestered,
If a neighbour has one of these numbers
I can just see it now "Neighbours from Hell" on the horizon and me being filmed with a Flame Thrower :smirk:

1) How do you think those flowers got pollinated?
2) What do you think birds eat?
