Considering purchasing this router for replacing my current Sky router, my Sky router is absolutely rubbish and intermittently cuts out when uploading things.
Seems to be quite a good price for this ASUS router as compared to other stores/shops.
Few notable features:
- Parental controls lets you enable/disable Internet access during specific times...
- Set the bandwidth priority and manage the network traffic with QOS software
- Flexible dual-band lag-free entertainment
- 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands
- Ai Radar Optimized
- Torrent Manager
- DUAL Band

No you said you need a seperate modem which isn't true (but you can 'daisy chain' a router and seperate modem like you suggest) what I said was you can get a router with modem built in (that part is true)
Edit: LOL

Virgin equipment is pi55 poor. Superhub 1 & 2 just don't perform to even the basic level of acceptability.
If you use them in Modem mode only then they absolve themselves of all responsibility by saying they can't test errors etc.

I've had one of these for about 1.5 years. Was fed up of having to reboot the virgin media smart hub every week so switched it to modem only mode and use one of these as the router. Been a solid performer ever since. All the usual features, also has vpn capability, lets you hang usb hard disks off of it as a media server or usb printers as a print server as well.

Excellent price for this. It's not the newest around but a strong, solid performer. Well worth the money.

Have this hooked up to our SR102 Sky Router - much better. It's not the latest and greatest, but good value and a definite improvement. Features over Sky Router:
1. Dual band wifi (5GHz) - particularly useful in London, less congestion
2. Gigabit ethernet - Super useful for Steam stream
3. QoS (in theory enables you to prioritise types of traffic, but it didn't work for us when we tried to prioritise Netflix traffic)

you'll need to use this in conjunction with the Sky router because of the way they authenticate on the network. Sky doesn't give username and passwords for the connection and they have a knack of actively blocking any non issued equipment. I have the N66 connected to the sky hub but with the sky hub wifi disabled.

Only since they've sent me out this new model of the router, they just seem to wear out over a short time and intermittently causes problems.
I can't say exactly what the problems are apart from just Wi-Fi problems, connection issues/dropouts and just various other stuff.
Port-Forwarding seems to be pretty much has mundane effect when I apply stuff now.

Are you sure its the router which is causing the problem and not the line or intermittency else where?
I've had several sky routers [due to upgrades over time] they have been flawless. Whenever I have had problems in the past its been due to something else.
If it is an issue with Sky they should be able to send you a replacement router.

You can purchase the Sky Q hub for £59 off sky, why not just do this?

That's what I did a couple of years back (I think) and it was great, the HH kept losing wifi and having to be rebooted all the time the ASUS was solid. The only issue I had was with BT Sport where I had to adjust some settings (google works for this), definitely recommended for the price

LOL, yes it is true, and you say as much yourself!
You need a modem for all of Sky's internet services whether it is combined with the modem, like Sky's own sub standard offerings, or a standalone one, which the Sky one can in effect be used as.
I mentioned it because services like cable do not need one as the connection installed allows a router like the Asus to be plugged straight into...which is why they are sometimes misleading referred to as 'cable routers'.
The OP asked if this would replace the Sky one and I gave a correct reply, yes as long as you have something else to provide the modem function, like his existing Sky router or one of the Openreach standalone modems.
Like all things there are many other options available but that is not what the OP asked.

For those with sky (ADSL or fibre) buy a hg612 modem and this and your all set. Also make sure to install the padavan firmware for advanced features and functionality.

I'm been with Sky fibre for years and complained the old router and modem was flakey so they sent me the black combined hub unit. Internet is problem free and wifi is just as bad but at least I have 1 unit to plug in and have less wires etc.

fwiw, the RT-N56u was updated last year. The new 'v2' model is now appears to be made by Edimax for Asus, uses different wifi chipset and only has 2, not 4 internal aerials found in original 'v1' model.

I've had one of these for years too, and had issues with it until I installed the Padavan firmware. Specifically with the original firmware I was getting crashes from time to time, and in addition it was difficult to boot up, sometimes needing several attempts (having to unplug everything and reconnect in the right sequence). On top of that, the setup UI was slow and unreliable, and sometimes would crash.
With the Padavan firmware installed, those problems are gone and it's a reliable, solid router.

I have the N66u and it works fine with the merlin software for sky fibre. Still plugs into my openreach modem but worked perfectly for the last 3 years!

Not true, if on fibre just get a router with VDSL modem built in.... (you will need to use a bit of software to 'extract' your username and pass as sky dont like giving this out)

Been rocking this router for years. Bought a second one recently and couldn't be more happy. Paid £120 for the first one and £60 3 months ago and was happy paying that so grab a bargin!
whatever you do you will still need to use the sky router/modem, then disable wifi and hard wire a repeater/extender to it and use the wifi from that instead

It would be easier just to get a modem-integrated router for Sky.

31 May 16#5
With Sky you need a separate modem whether it's ADSL or fibre, however, you can use the Sky router to do that job, turn off wifi etc, connect this router directly to it and let it do all your LAN tasks. Little bit more to it than that re settings on your Sky router but Google will show you dozens of guides to do that.

This will NOT replace a Sky router. You will need an ADSL router. This is for cable connections (not sure about Sky Fibre but I believe they use the same kit).
There is a Reevoo question at the bottom of the page specifically asking whether this will replace a Sky router.

Yeah Sky router is pants. I heard that they are soon to upgrade to a new model which is used for Sky Q but not sure they'll hand those out to existing users
