I've got a cheap different model De'Longhi and I'm fussy(though not snobby) about my coffee and I rate it very highly. Biggest tip is warm the cup otherwise it's all technical tips. How fine the grind, how hard you pack it double or single shot etc. As above YouTube is your barista buddy
Enjoying a flat white as we speak :-)

Tamping alone is often the difference between a good and bad cup IME.. You can have a decent machine produce either good or bad depending on the skill of tamping.

I'm not knocking this deal, but for those who love coffee, should really consider an Aeropress (look at the reviews on amazon). A full on espresso machine is a delight, obviously, but this cheap machine isn't ever going to produce a full on espresso.

Just to be clear I've looked up the correct item is it the big tube type item that sits on the cup?, so it then won't froth milk?

That's quite untrue. I've put an unpressurised bottomless portafilter on mine and it's giving me excellent results with very finely ground coffee. I just hadto play with the tamper, grind and amount until I got it right. Having freshly roasted beans is also a must. I paid a fair bit less for mine but I'd struggle to fine anything close for double the cost of this tbh

Worth pointing out though Aeropress is a different experience to espresso.. Aeropress is closer to filtered coffee but far nicer.

Argos substituted an ECC221.R for same price of the 220.R

I bought the black one yesterday after my Delonghi Icona failed following 5 years of heavy use.
It's a bit flimsy, lightweight and plasticy and so far the coffee is just OK. I think I'll need to experiment with coffee, quantity and tamping a bit more.
Not bad for the price though. Just remember that 1 costa/nero/starbucks latte a day is gonna cost £50 a month!

Cheap coffee machine + pre-ground coffee. I'd rather have instant.

Not bad for casual drinkers. If you're into actual espresso then you'll know that this isn't for you.
I had a delonghi machine not dissimilar to this one for a number of years - it was reliable and good for basic strong coffee (not espresso levels of extraction) and the odd cappuccino/latte. I recently picked up a second hand Gaggia Classic for this around this price and now I realise why these budget machines are shop popular - the pressurised filter baskets make it so that you get plentiful crema/foam regardless of your tamping technique and grind so you get a pretty nice coffee from them but it's worse extraction level than actual espresso so you get more liquid that is less concentrated.

I got it. Makes good coffee. And it's cheap to run.
I paid 48 £ -reduced to clear in My local Tesco.
Mine is 9 months old. Also for those who don't like mess. You can use ESE pods
Still a very good price though. Might get a spare one

For the coffee novice who has only used pods and instant coffee, how do you use this to make coffee? What do you need to put inside?

There's a few demo videos on youtube, just search out the model number. Generally it's ground coffee (your own or packaged). I think you can use a particular make of pod too (not 100% sure).

If it hasn't changed in the last year or so... mine came with two attachments for the group head (the bit where the coffee goes), one for ground coffee, and one for those ese pod/bag things, so you choose what you'd prefer.
It's pretty good for a cheap machine.

All the more reason, surely, both because it's nice and also because you must need the caffeine?

If you're not going to steam milk, look for Delonghi Alicia or similar, takes up much less space.

Instructions unclear. Putting tea inside due to not knowing which of the many types of coffee products to use.

I bought this when it was the same price at Christmas, my first one made one round of coffee then gave up the ghost, I got a replacement from Argos, and it lasted for two weeks and then the same thing happened just would not start up I really was upset as I really liked the machine.

I've had this model for 3 years (paid a similar price when Amazon reduced it) and I'm very happy with it.
More hassle than a Tassimo/Nespresso machine (I have a Tassimo at work for convenience) but it makes better coffee and costs a lot less to run.
Suspect it's an old model now so they're selling them off - still a great machine for the money.
