Bought one of these ,on the Homebase deal, a couple of weeks ago for £10 (reduced from £ 20 ) and happy I had a good deal http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/canary-island-date-palm-10-homebase-2433624
Loads of these in Morrisons (Stamford ,Lincs ) today for £5, so presume its National - maybe 80% of the size of the Homebase one I bought but still a great deal for a fiver . So naturally I bought another one .
Morrisons also doing 30 cm terracotta pots for £4 - proper terracotta - not pretend plastic ! ( can't be bothered to check if that's been posted ) ideal ! Pop a bit of sand/gravel in the bottom of the pot , add your palm , fill round with compost and/or topsoil - drench with water to get it nicely tucked in and job done .
If like me you have fond memories of holidays in the Canaries ,you will remember these being all over - though normally much larger - these are only about 3ft tall but will still bring back the memories as it sits on your patio and grows year by year .
A couple of care instructions I have gleaned from the internet ,
It is hardy down to about - 8C but best to overwinter in a greenhouse or conservatory . Or just chuck a fleece over it to keep it warm if its outdoors and hard frosts are forecast .
When a palm frond sags below the horizontal ( its dying ),cut it off and the classic pineapple shape will be apparent ,

got one last year and it overwintered fine in cornwall outdoors. eventually they do grow very large. in torpoint where hms raleigh is there are a couple of houses with them in front garden and they now completely fill the garden, but probably at least 20 years old.

got one of these 5 years ago it grows slow it's now about 5 foot high by 5 foot wide looks stunning I've looked after it well ..planted in the ground when it was big enough don't wrap it at winter but has a weed sheet and slate stone which stops roots from freezing up
