Aliexpress is just a Chinese eBay equivalent with good sellers and bad. I've bought several devices from sellers there - phones, tablets, mini-PCs - with absolutely no problems whatsoever.
The obvious trick is to only buy from sellers with very good feedback. If a deal looks to good to be true, chances are that it is.

bought from aliexpress many times and never had a problem tbh..
Mu xtouch arrived - from GearBest though I found it thanks to this link.
phone looks nice, sadly it has a fault, either the battery is dud or (more likely) there is a wireing issue with it. when it eventually comes on it shows as around 90% full but move it and it comes up with battery empty and shuts off - or just shuts off.
it is not the charger as even when it is showing as fully charged without the charger attached, as soon as i move it too much it shuts off. waiting to hear from retailer but as it is a company based in the far east I am concerned.

hi the problem you are having is the battery needs clipping in securely it has a little press clip connection about 1 3rd of the way down from the top of the phone but as the back is glued into place and removing it warps the edges i would just suggest pressing firmly and running your fingers down the back side try to feel where the phone has a slight raised area concentrate on that part, the connection is so thin and flimsy as it is attached to a tiny ribbon that you may not feel it fit snug or clip or even move but just keep trying problem is due to crappy connector in the battery, otherwise take back of using warm heat and press just above the battery as the connection is seated there under the plastic housing and that has to be unscrewed to completely take the battery out. hope this helps msg me if needed [email protected]

mine is currently on its way, no idea how long it will take. A quick question, I have been warned i should not trust the OS on this phone and should hack it and load a custom rom onto it to make sure no spyware on it.
is this just some xenophobic nonsense or cant the OS from these cheapo Chinese phones be dodgy?
Thanks

Many thanks OP. Ordered 8 Jun, free surface post plus insurance. Delivered 17 Jun. Packaging quality very high, and first impressions of phone are excellent. Astonishing value for £88.

Bought mine about a year ago from Gearbest and paid 190 dollars for xtouch, case, glass screen protector and shipping insurance. I ordered from the Hong Kong warehouse and it was delivered in 10 days with no import taxes. The phone itself is fantastic with loads of storage. I have put an SD card in but have not used it yet because I have only used about 1\3rd of the built in 32gb for apps. The battery lasts one day if you are sensible with its use. The price on Gearbest now is a bargain. I have no hesitation in recommending this phone (and I have no connection to the company). I cannot wait for the 4gb/64gb xtouch pro.

Me too. But I wouldn't be devastated if it ended up sitting in a draw and I went out and got a new one which is what I think your getting at. I mean for £80 it has to be worth a crack in my opinion. I have ordered, I'm on a nearly 3 year old moto g which is showing no signs of giving up and if I'm still using it in 6months time then so be it! It's all about expectations...

I know what you mean about Gearbest, it would be incredibly funny were it not so tragic. I've had good experience of using Focalprice though, they were quite prompt inresolving a problem and didn't speak Chinglish like the others.

Ironically, I've just had the quickest resolution of an order today.
About a week ago I filed a complaint regarding my SJ7000 Action Camera which would not work when using HDMI out to play back the video. Evenything else is working as it should.
They are sending me out a replacement that should arrive in 24~30 days...
I've had good experiences with Aliexpress - never been any problems with the orders just that the delivery can take forever but in one instance, it arrived in less than a week!
There appears to be a lot of UK based Chinese sellers on eBay these days as well. Had bad luck with some 50w PIR security lights that failed after a few weeks of use. Pity because the light output was fantastic and they were extremely sensitive for detection. Had to file a PayPal dispute to get the problem resolved after the usual round of "would you accept X amount and let us have a little profit" (for our defective product!) emails that go on for about a week on a daily basis.

Unfortunately I've had problems with the vast majority of Gearbest orders since the end of last year.
Customer service is like a comedy show...if you have the patience, yes they usually resolve the matter to some sort of acceptable level but it's not a one click solution by any stretch of the imagination.

Also if it is found on Ali, they have TCB of about 5% and probably quidco too.

well if you cant find it on Ali, here it is on Gearbest? http://www.gearbest.com/cell-phones/pp_234129.html
~Ali is actually great, they have a great CS team with live chat 24/7 (they try their best to speak english!) if you have any problems with your order you just dispute, I've had a few problems with orders and just had them fully refunded, or replaced no hassle. It's like Ebay it's a marketplace it all depends on the sellers. and you get individual feedback per seller, like Ebay, so buy from a good seller and you'll get a good product generally!

Bought an Amigoo android phone for my lad. 28 squids, arrived in 3 weeks. Couldn't fault that. My only grumble was the seller didn't reduce the ticket price for customs.

Do you have another Link for your Deal or something?, or ..... thanx. :-)

I buy vape stuff from China and that site is owned by gearbest, they use it to sell vape stuff (among other things) they can't sell on gearbest such as Joytech stuff. i would say it is a lot safer than aliexpress

I bought this phone about a year ago through that online auction site! cracking phone, fast and stable, down side is the battery has started draining quickly now, and the sim tray is fiddly, it's easy to try and force it into phone the wrong way if you're not careful

Is there a risk of import tax on these? Yes, there is a risk. As a general rule, the slow/cheapest method has the best chance of slipping under the radar. Express couriers like DHL are pretty hot at picking up on import duty charges (plus an £11 admin fee). I've ordered plenty of duty applicable items from Gearbest, BangGood and one from Ali Express. Every time i elected for the free/slow shipping and have not been charged yet.
In addition to slow delivery another factor to consider is that the device goes wrong, any guarantee is pretty much worthless. It's all about risk versus reward. In this instance the reward is a brand new, very good phone at an awesomely cheap price. If you are not a risk taker then get the LG G3 with a 12 month guarantee - it's a good phone but two years old now, so i'd expect any refurb to have had a fair bit of previous use. Me, i'd go for the Bluboo

I think this is the same thing (someone with more phone knowledge will have to say for sure!) from everbuying which while it still doesn't have a perfect rep seems to have a better rep than Aliexpress:
With the advent of Android Pay the absence of NFC is a deal breaker for me. Shame as at that price everything else is there, even finger print unlock.

What a shame looks like Aliexpress is going to be the problem here and not the phone. Would have ordered one otherwise. I have use most of the the Chinese sellers including Gearbest and Focalprice but Aliexpress I will give a miss.
