dcpk, I'm sorry you've had a bad time with this model. It's hard to say whether you're merely very unlucky or whether there's more serious build quality problems - but I added all the online reviews I could find at the time (I originally bought one for me, one for boyf a few months ago and posted on here) and I've had no issues. I always try to balance my posts with positives and negatives but couldn't see anyone banging a drum about this.
Of course there's a few HUKD threads on this too - people tend to moan more than praise on the internet but glad you found a model that works for you now :smiley:

I don't normally like to knock anyones post or post negative reviews but on this occasion I felt the need.
I got this model a couple of years ago and at first was very happy with my purchase even though 95% of the stuff that comes with is is no use to anyone unless you like to keep your nails neat and smooth.
Used on and off for 4 months (about 10 hours use in total) only small jobs like cutting off nail heads, cutting plastic and a bit of sanding and worked fine what what I needed it for.
Then one day It just started to drop the speed to the lowest setting, no problem just turn it back up (at this point i thought it might of been myself knocking it down by accident or some sort of safety feature, remember not used it enough & who reads instructions right? ) anyway it got to the point where it got a lot more frequent until it would no longer rise above the minimum speed, so returned it and had no issues and was given a brand new one not a refurb or customer return. (no problems at all, not even a second question so Maplins good on customer returns in this instance)
All started out good and same again and maybe even less usage than the first, this one the LED readout started to fade in and out and went on like this over a couple of weeks, but I could live with it in the usage it got and wasn't much fussed about the readout as it only tells you the speed anyway. Then one day I was working on something in the shed as you do and smelt something burning like an electrical fire and it turned out to be this pile of poop. Quickly unplugged it from the mains and not much in the way of damage externally but it had burnt out the board inside. From what I could tell was the on/off switch on the drill doesnt isolate the main power coming in as you can adjust the speed setting before you start it so power is going through to the circuit board and think there lies the problem as it alway felt warm even when not using it if left plugged in (not talking about plugged in all the time just when working on things and plugged in ready to use).
Took that one back and this time they tried to fob me off with a customer return and the standard bull about how it's been tested and same guarantee as a new one but stood my ground and in the end gave me another one off the shelf.
Anyway as I come to the end of (my review, my opinion) upon using the 3rd and new one it stopped working after another couple of months and by this time just gave up on it and binned it and ended up buying a slightly more expensive well known make and been using it for almost a year without a single problem.
The moral of the story is you get what you pay for or as I still like to say buy Sh*te buy twice :P
I think I still have the box/case and most of the accessories if anyone in the Manchester area who could use them for Free if willing to collect? Sorry cannot be faffed with postage.

Can't comment on build quality between the two, not many videos of either on Youtube unfortunately.
The Parkside Lidl is 10,000 – 40,000 versus the Maplin 8,000 – 35,000 (tho it has electronic variable speed, if that matters to you)
Obviously the Maplin has more accessories - the Lidl has 42 versus Maplin's 219
Lidl's 3 year guarantee is always brilliant, assume Maplin's are 1 year - not sure what their aftersales is like
Both have the flexi-shaft tool
Lidl comes with the hanging cradle, Maplin doesn't (still has the metal catch to hang it somewhere, though)
The Maplin has the removable handle (which you have to buy for a real Dremel) - more useful for engraving, intricate work, keeping the tool steady
Can see the Parkside/Lidl gets good reviews on the current HUKD thread, the Maplin appears to, too. Depends what you're looking for!

As for removing the brushes, here's how to do it with the Dremel 4000, assume the Maplin rotary tool will be similar?
1. Unscrew the brush cap (there are two) just below the variable speed control
2. Grabbing the small brass spring, pull the worn brush from the housing
3. Place the new brush in the housing
4. Replace brush cap
5. Repeat for other side
6. Run for 5-10 minutes with no load to wear them in

The Maplin model looks similar to an older Dremel 400 XPR Digital's display below, or even a Professional Dremel
The Maplin N17QN's digital display looks like this - Variable speed 8,000 - 35,000 rpm (like the aforementioned Dremel 400 XPR Digital/Professional models, displays in increments of 1,000). Also, wondering if the circular section just above the digital display allows you to change the carbon brushes (?).
I did ask on the Maplin page (Q&A section) if the brushes in this are replaceable - to be honest, it is such a mine of misinformation I'm not sure I trust their reply - seems to be staff members who look up manufacturers' manuals rather than actual users with real world experience.
Any owners of this care to confirm for me, please?

The Parkside Lidl is 10,000 – 40,000 versus the Maplin 8,000 – 35,000 (tho it has electronic variable speed, if that matters to you)
Obviously the Maplin has more accessories - the Lidl has 42 versus Maplin's 219
Lidl's 3 year guarantee is always brilliant, assume Maplin's are 1 year - not sure what their aftersales is like
Both have the flexi-shaft tool
Lidl comes with the hanging cradle, Maplin doesn't (still has the metal catch to hang it somewhere, though)
The Maplin has the removable handle (which you have to buy for a real Dremel) - more useful for engraving, intricate work, keeping the tool steady
Can see the Parkside/Lidl gets good reviews on the current HUKD thread, the Maplin appears to, too. Depends what you're looking for!

As for removing the brushes, here's how to do it with the Dremel 4000, assume the Maplin rotary tool will be similar?
1. Unscrew the brush cap (there are two) just below the variable speed control
2. Grabbing the small brass spring, pull the worn brush from the housing
3. Place the new brush in the housing
4. Replace brush cap
5. Repeat for other side
6. Run for 5-10 minutes with no load to wear them in
The Maplin N17QN's digital display looks like this - Variable speed 8,000 - 35,000 rpm (like the aforementioned Dremel 400 XPR Digital/Professional models, displays in increments of 1,000). Also, wondering if the circular section just above the digital display allows you to change the carbon brushes (?).
