The 4-star Laura Ashley The Manor in Hertfordshire offers boutique accommodation in the countryside, just 30 minutes from London. Owned by the Laura Ashley brand, it is listed in The Times's Cool Hotel Guide, which praises its "elegant" style and "excellent service".
Tucked away at the end of a curved driveway in Elstree, the Tudor-style Victorian house is surrounded by 10 acres of manicured gardens. It has a large terrace that overlooks a pond, and there's a big chess set on the lawn.
The hillside manor retains many of its original architectural features, including the dramatic wooden fireplace in the centre of the grand reception hall. The décor, designed by the Laura Ashley team, features neutral colours, rich fabrics and ornamental pieces.
The Cavendish Restaurant, which has two AA Rosettes and is listed in The Michelin Guide 2016, serves modern British dishes. The Terrace Bar overlooks the gardens and has panoramic views of London on a clear day. It's an ideal spot for afternoon tea with a glass of champagne.

Ah, this is where they filmed the tennis match scenes in Terry-Thomas film School For Scoundrels, which funnily enough was on BBC2 this morning.

Just looking at the map where this is. Looks like cycle route 5 is very near and about 90 minutes ride into London. Used to work in Kilburn so know that route to south of the river very well. Anyone know how hostile the route down from Elstree is?
