It's a great place to buy, but the eBay+PayPal tax is a hefty price to pay for sellers.

Just a few additional observations that may have been overlooked - a) Who in their right would sell 1p items and offer free shipping plus absorbing the PayPal fees as well - hence losing at least .75p per transaction for a 1p trade ? Please find me examples of such listings on eBay. 2) If 1p items were available and you had to pay the shipping charges it would still cost you a minimum of £330 which is well above your £6 claim! P.S.>Yoghurt pots serve an useful purpose and provide nice food for thought !

...Sell 600 items for 1p each > = £6 eBay seller fees + postage 600x .55p min [email protected]%= £33_ plus PayPal 20p / transaction= £120. Total cost to gain 600 feedbacks would be in excess of £159 - not £6. Since average feedback received these days is around 40% of transactions completed a more realistic cost would be in the region of £400 to get your 600 feedback !!

Unfortunately, this promotional offer is by invitation only :disappointed:
HUKDer2016 to TheMexicaliKid
10 May 16#114
Yeah! I would like to know the criteria to get invited.
I've been selling on eBay on and off (private seller) since the early 2000s and never get these offers.
Basically, what it means is anyone outside of the promotion has even less chance of selling an identical item compared to someone who has been offered the promotion.
Non Promo
Item listed @ £100 = £10 ebay fees (approx) if it sells =£90 (less Paypal) Promo (Identical Item)
Item listed @ £91 = £1 ebay fees (approx) if it sells = £90 (less Paypal)
So therefore, the promo seller could have a lower BIN price to entice the punters and trump the non-promo seller by £9 to get the sale.
Alternatively, seller could go head to head at the same price as the non-promo item for a nice little extra.

If you look at their financial position (for the last 5 years showing increased revenues), even after taking PayPal out of the equation, they're certainly not showing any signs of imminent insolvency. I suspect they've realised they need to get small sellers and private individuals back, to keep increasing their profits, rather than there's a collapse in the profit they're already making.
As a small seller I was hoping they'd start to feel the impact of their recent behaviour, but it doesn't seem to have affected the bottom line.

I disagree with there's no better place to sell stuff statement... Ebay fees are still quite high for private sellers and don't try to sell your item for free via eBay owned - Gumtree either, as it will be blocked should eBay log your sales from your I.P. address as they did to me. That's why I have now LEFT THE SITE as private seller.
Without sounding hypocritical I'd only nip back to the site to buy on rare occasions!

I don't get the hate for Gumtree. I've sold things on there for way more than I could have on eBay (and brought a few things too). Yes, there is a bit of hassle in arranging collection but nothing a quick call can't fix. There is a potential danger in meeting a stranger but my experience has been of a variety of people from different backgrounds. From students to a dad who just wanted a cheap audio system. As long as you follow common sense and don't put yourself or your house in danger, Gumtree is much better.
I use eBay for things that don't use sell well on Gumtree like books and retro stuff. It reachers a wider audience and I'm happy to pay the extra fee if it means I get rid of an unwanted item regardless of how much I get from it.
Having said all of that, promo doesn't work for me. :disappointed:

Ebay's 10% final value fee is rip off, especially they charge it on postage and they charge you for receiving money via paypal as well. Retailers like tesco only have a profit margin of 4%. Haven's used them for ages.
mbuckhurst to mmp669
10 May 16#79
I'm not defending Ebay's high prices, but you can't compare 4% margin to a 10% fee, that 10% has to pay for amongst other things, offering offers like these, IT infrastructure, staff and a whole lot more, this gives an idea of what happens to that money:

I'm not sure there is a pattern, of the users I've got access to, the lowest sales one got £3 max (for a user that's never sold £30 worth of stuff in a single transaction), my best user that sold over £350 last month, and I've been using to get rid of my higher value stuff, I've got the same £3 offer, the rest of my users have sold a few £s worth of stuff, but nothing significant, have either got no offer, or have the £1 offer.
Seems to me there's absolutely no pattern that you can follow, I don't know if your buying pattern works either, because I only use one of the users to buy, leaving the rest dormant in the hope of £10 of £20 vouchers or similar. The user I do use got 2 £15 of £25 vouchers in one 48hr period, so I don't expect to get anymore for a while on that one.
Another interesting fact, these offers are appearing over time, so even though you may not have it now, it might appear later, when I first commented on this thread, only 1 of my users had an offer, just now, a few more have got it (in varying forms), it may be that the ones who've not got any offer yet, will have it by the end of the day.
For me the £1 offer last until midnight tomorrow, the £3 midnight the day after.
Also, anyone who thinks selling on Facebook/Gumtree, Ebay is an auction site, so there's a good chance it will get more than a fixed price, but at least in general sells and sells for what it's worth.

********Important info for sellers with items already listed**********
I just contacted eBay to ask whether or not cancelling an item that is already listed, activating this new offer, then re-listing the item contravenes their terms of usage. It was confirmed multiple times that this is not frowned upon in any way and that sellers are free to do this if they wish! Obviously, you may have to pay a fee if there are bids on an item already and I guess it may annoy potential buyers but it is allowed.

No they're not. They don't charge listing fees unless you're a business seller these days and they frequently offer final value fee discounts like this. I sold my old windows tablet on there last week for £100 but only paid them £5 commission because they gave me a 50% off code.

10 May 161#48
from my experience it seems to relate to sales volume (and probably the other things in you seller dashboard, but mine have always been fairly good). There's probably a little bit of a behavioural aspect too; eg if you usually sell nothing and suddenly sell 10 items for £100 in a month you might get a better offer than someone who normally sells 100/£2000 doing 10/£100. its possible for the max fees they consider your typical per item sale value too?
It would be nice if those getting good offers would share why they think so based on their stats. I got the £3 offer and have sold mar:£147,apr:80,may: £40, with typical amount ~£30. when i had a couple of months at £300 and £500 they were throwing offers at me.
Spark
10 May 161#46
Definitely. I think eBay realised a long time ago that the days of them being able to massively profiteer are long gone and they tend to have much more reasonable pricing and a lot of offers these days.
I personally will never sell anything on gumtree because I don't like the idea of dolies and drug addicts coming around to look at (read: scope out) my apartment and belongings.

Although you didn't get an email, the offer would have shown on your ebay "all selling" page , under "promotional offers" - that's why it worked when you clicked the link given on this site.
It is only for "selected" persons, hence others will find link won't work.

They've been saying that for years, the reality is quite the opposite, it's still the best selling platform for most people, I use other platforms but it's Ebay that manages to sell 99% of my goods.
If someone comes up with something better, they had better put a lot of money into advertising etc. because the likes of Ebid are making no headway, mostly because no one has heard of them.

I've got £3 max which is still good if I want to sell some high value items
Got the £3 variant with no email but it really makes no difference as its better than 10% fees on my higher value items!
Thanks Op! Heat!

I'd rather stick with Ebay thanks. There's no better place to sell your stuff, especially when offers like these come around every month. There's no better place to buy either.

check your selling manager page as well. I didn't receive an email but there was an offer in my selling manager although it was for £3 maximum fee, shame it wasn't £1

I don't think this is expired???
(I've only got the £3 offer, which is annoying).
The links are on the first page..
But you have to be *invited* via your seller account messages inside eBay, so just
log into ebay, click one of the links above on the first page of comments and agree
to see what you get.. either £1, £3 or nothing - simples!
Happens a lot it seems, are there really that many idiots on ebay??
Extra £30 would have been nice not but least they won't get £30 more as I'm getting the £1 deal
I've been selling on eBay on and off (private seller) since the early 2000s and never get these offers.
Basically, what it means is anyone outside of the promotion has even less chance of selling an identical item compared to someone who has been offered the promotion.
Non Promo
Item listed @ £100 = £10 ebay fees (approx) if it sells =£90 (less Paypal)
Promo (Identical Item)
Item listed @ £91 = £1 ebay fees (approx) if it sells = £90 (less Paypal)
So therefore, the promo seller could have a lower BIN price to entice the punters and trump the non-promo seller by £9 to get the sale.
Alternatively, seller could go head to head at the same price as the non-promo item for a nice little extra.

Thanks guys.
Would I be eligible?
Thanks
I have the £3 offer in my account
Unfortunately, this promotional offer is by invitation only.
I feel left out :disappointed:
As a small seller I was hoping they'd start to feel the impact of their recent behaviour, but it doesn't seem to have affected the bottom line.

Thanks

Without sounding hypocritical I'd only nip back to the site to buy on rare occasions!
Anyone know if this offer still works if you list via a third party site - I use Auctiva?
I use eBay for things that don't use sell well on Gumtree like books and retro stuff. It reachers a wider audience and I'm happy to pay the extra fee if it means I get rid of an unwanted item regardless of how much I get from it.
Having said all of that, promo doesn't work for me. :disappointed:

Thanks!!
Also, anyone who thinks selling on Facebook/Gumtree, Ebay is an auction site, so there's a good chance it will get more than a fixed price, but at least in general sells and sells for what it's worth.
mike
I'd rather pay a few quid to ebay and not have to deal with all the hassle.
£3 offer link goes through but says valid for 2 days only.
no thanks.
Don't forget that you may not get an email - you can check whether or not you are eligible by going into your seller dashboard and you will see the offer listed there (if you're eligible, of course).
If others want to use Gumtree etc then that's up to them but I don't.
It would be nice if those getting good offers would share why they think so based on their stats. I got the £3 offer and have sold mar:£147,apr:80,may: £40, with typical amount ~£30. when i had a couple of months at £300 and £500 they were throwing offers at me.
I personally will never sell anything on gumtree because I don't like the idea of dolies and drug addicts coming around to look at (read: scope out) my apartment and belongings.
It is only for "selected" persons, hence others will find link won't work.
Only any use for items over £30 FV.
