YO-KAI WATCH® is a Japanese phenomenon – a franchise about hundreds of sometimes cute, sometimes spooky, and usually mischievous Yo-kai that secretly inhabit our world. They’re hiding everywhere! Find them, befriend them, turn them into a team on your Yo-kai Watch, and then challenge evil Yo-kai to help people in need on Nintendo 3DS family systems!
With your Yo-kai Watch, now you can finally see the normally invisible Yo-kai hiding everywhere in your town. Many of them are causing trouble in people’s daily lives, so you’ll need to assemble a team of six Yo-kai on your Yo-kai Wheel and call upon them when you need their help. Every Yo-kai has a unique personality and abilities, so it will take some strategy to form and change your team to address various problems and fight evil Yo-kai.

There is currently a demo on the eShop that you can try out.
It does not have the battle depth that Pokemon has and focuses more on story and character.

Its not a challangeing game, not that pokemon was, but its very different to pokemon, the only similarity is its an RPG and you kinda of have to catch "yo-kai" (like ghosts) and help them solve problems..
It is HUGE!! in Japan right now, so expect a million sequels but the game has very little depth but its a nice game to play.

Didn't enjoy the demo myself, can't see this picking up much popularity in the west. It's just not as engaging as it should be, kinda feels like a mobile game. Definitely try the demo before buying, I was planning to get it but tried the demo and nope'd away.
