Even at the sale price I'd be far more tempted with a Seiko SARB 033/055, provenance, build quality and style far beyond it's price point.

All of these watches are distinctly average at best, never understood why people care so much about cheap watches

I am constantly tempted by the Parnis watches that look like the expensive Pilot watches mentioned above by some one. They have just (by the looks of it) made a sub dial hand that matches the main hands. Previous to this the sub dial hand was out of characher. BTW totally agree the lume on the Seiko was awfully positioned. There may be a legit reason but I can't guess what that would be.

Seagull is both a manufacturer and a movement. Seagull historically started making clone Swiss movements. They were so good, someone must have decided to just make the movements under the name Seagull. So they have their own website and some of their in-house watches have tourbillion movements costing around £2K to £6K. But their cheapest mechanisms end up in all sorts of watches including Parnis (which I know well) and Tissell watches. A watch with a Seagull mechanism is a mark of reliability IMO.

You really haven't head about the in-house built Japan movements powering the sarbs? They are tanks. Do your research before posting rubbish.

The Chinese Seagull - is that the brand of watch or the manufacturer of the movement? If its the latter and you like the look of Steinhart and the price of the Tisell watches then take a look at Parnis watches. IIRC from old research seem good quality for the price.

Wow, Tissell look like a good company ( I had never heard of them)- lot of respectable Seagull and Miyota movements at great prices- thanks!

I have the Steinhart Triton 100ATM don't know what else it compares to, its a well built beast.
I also own the Seiko sarb 17(alpinist, it just gorgeous and feels so well made)
I like some Tissots, not quartz, but can see the appeal.

Personally I'd consider the SARBs on a par with my Omegas, at least as good as my Seamaster Pros but just a notch away from my Planet Ocean, the Steinhart is interesting, it's build quality is very, very good but it's trying to be a Rollie, if they had a designer as good as their builder they'd be even better.
Have you had a look at Tissell?

The SARB 017 is Seiko's attempt at a field watch- they also do it with a cream/of white dial. The second crown at 4pm is for a moving compass- it is meant to tell you directions you are travelling in outdoors. Their are lots of reviews on youtube on the 017 also called the Alpinist. I would like to add to your list of great cheap makers in addition to SARBs and Steinharts- I would definitely add Laco, Orient and even the Chinese Seagull- all very affordable automatic mechanisms.
ChrisDNI
15 Apr 16#38
Might I add a few addendums? The seconds hands remind me of stretched Rollie hands a little too much, the second crown at four o'clock looks oddly placed and the lume markers being uneven are a misnomer in such a piece.
ChrisDNI
15 Apr 162#37
I agree also, Steinhart is an excellent manufacturer, I wish they'd issue a rerun of their OVM with the original colour lume markings rather than the current one.

The model you mentioned, the SARB 017 is quite a looker, I'll be keeping an eye on it as it has something about it, not often am I speechless about a watch but that is superlative.

£140 for a Rangeman was a great buy! It's a great watch, as you say - I bought mine from Goldsmiths with the Tesco x3 voucher deal so only paid £90.00 in vouchers for it and £10! ! I also have a Aviator GW-A1100-1AER which is fantastic and has sapphire crystal which is nice. Other than that a Aviator GW-3000M-4AER which is a little different on its orange strap. I only buy solar powered G's to save on having to do the battery changes! The Mudmaster looks awesome!

Seiya or Higuchi. Stick them in google. You may pay slightly more than ebay, but when it comes to watches, you should always go for a reliable source.

I have a lot of different watches including a Tissot PRC200 bought 5 years ago. It has had one battery replacement 2 years ago but has now developed a fault where the chronograph sub seconds dial is jammed for no reason.
After some investigation I have discovered that the movement G10.211, which is probably the same in the watch, is designed to be unrepearable. The only thing I could do is pay to have a complete new movement fitted which is going to be prohibitively expensive.

Seiya are well known for their worldwide warranty - 2 years I believe. They even send you an email after a year to see if you are still happy with your purchase and if you have any problems. I don't see John Lewis doing that.

Could not agree with you anymore- good to see someone who knows about watches on HUKD. That SARB line is top quality. I agree even if it cost more- the OP could take that £200 and save some more and get that SARB. I am saving up for the Seiko SARB 017 right now:)

As an owner of one Seiko SARG I am not questioning the movement. I am however questioning how is it an alternative to someone who's buying perhaps his 7th watch and wants a quartz to sit in the drawer ready to use when needed.

I purchased mine from Expedite Electronics mate. The price has gone up slightly but if you use the discount code 'SPRING20', you may be able to receive some discount. Not sure if there is a minimum spend on that discount code though.
The link is as follows: http://www.expeditelectronics.com/g-shock-master-of-g-series-gw-9400-3cr-green-digital-men-s-watch.html
You'll need to allow around a week for delivery as it's imported from Japan and delivered to their UK depot, then it's sent out to you. You won't be charged any additional taxes or anything though as it's sent to you from their UK depot.
Hope this helps mate.

£280 automatic dress watch with practically no warranty outside of Japan as an alternative to £190 sporty quartz?
I've got the same watch but with black dial and grey rim, and it is the best watch I've ever had. Building quality for the money is absolutely worth it.

Might I take apart your comment bit by bit? If you would perhaps spend a little money, purchase one, in twenty years from now, you or, dare I say it, your offspring might appreciate such a watch, 'though I do discourage such cruelty upon this world.
Your "sporty quartz" is at best a cheap movement, most likely the very worst churned out by our friends in the Alps, not to mention the cheap materials used in the process of manufacturing your "timepiece".
The Seiko is proven across the world, not just in Asia, this model in particular is regarded amongst its peers as ay least as good as an Omega, at least as far as build quality, time keeping, provenance, etcetera, etcetera might count.

Men's watches are like ladies bags - you can never have too many - each day a different watch ! I've got about 10 - ranging from a few £10 Casios for gardening to a much more expensive Breitling for well when I need to look much more expensive ! Never been a Tissot fan - my favourite is actually a Mondaine - the Swiss rail watch - sadly not the one with the party trick of stopping for a minute on the hour ! Nearly bought the Citizen one at £200 couple of days ago but the dials tend to be a bit fussy. Oh and I love my Wenger - bit like the Mondaine but black ! So what's the problem - my wife has way over 10 bags ..... anyway this is a good price for a Tissot but not for me

I have this watch, this colour. I can 100% recommend it, I got it from Goldsmiths a few months ago for the £215 original sale price, worth every penny. It oozes quality, and it's held its condition extremely well!

I got my Rangeman for £140 brand new (Olive Drab Green) - Absolute beast of a watch. It's my primary work watch which takes a beating on a daily basis and still keeps giving. I also have a Mudmaster GWG1000 in Green which I got for £270 brand new, its a big too large for work so I wear it casually.
I have an Aviator GW3000 too but since I got my Mudmaster and Rangeman, I hardly wear it. I've started to prefer resin watches over metal ones since those purchases, hence the GW3000 being neglected.
G-shocks are the best value for money watches out there by a long shot.
