I'm looking for a budget 8" Windows tablet (Under £60) and need to decide between taking the risk on Gearbest or buying a used unit from the dreaded ebay. I've looked at the Chuwi units that seem pretty similar but at the mo they're a tenner more price than the Telcast (this price is showing as only for the next 6 days).

I'm sure this will get the inevitable "don't buy from gearbest", "8inch is too small" and similar comments but if there are a few useful comments to help me decide then it was worth posting! For the record, I've never bought from Gearbest, I prefer to use Banggood where I can, but for this price I'd take the risk, but I wouldn't spend much more.

If anyone out there has a budget 8inch Windows tablet then please let me know what you think if it's real world performance.

All these cheap tablets and phones from China are great (don't get me wrong), but every time there has always been some niggly problem that stops them being totally awesome and then eventually becomes a massive drag to the point where I'd rather have a proper branded and supported unit. For example: excessive battery drain in standby, awful WiFi signal/range, bad/below average touch sensitivity, sporadic SD slot reader and so on (all things I've experienced on a different device). Am I alone on this?

Could you tell me what the battery life is like? One of the things I would be using this for its watching movies, so what kind of times do you get for general use and how long for watching movies etc? How long does it take to charge?

And to the rest of you, thanks for your input. It sounds pretty good. I've just picked up a Lenovo miix 2 32gb for £36 so I'll give it a run out and if I'm not impressed then I'll order one of these - hope they don't sell out!

I bought this from here last time it was around this price (Through hukd) It is a nice tablet, but the volume is dismal. Way too quiet on full volume, useless for any music or video sadly :disappointed:

I'd only buy from China if it's £100+, so Section 75 applies. I guess rolling the dice with £58 isn't too bad. I am pretty tempted because I currently have a Linx 8 and it's great to have full Windows at home but out and about you need a proper touch OS.

Beware
If there's anything wrong with electrical goods China's import laws will not accept lithium batteries.
There is no way of removing the lithium battery as it's a sealed unit.
The cost to return the item lies with the buyer (not cheap) and I have heard of mobile phones etc being destroyed by customs.
I currently have my credit card company trying to recover my costs.
I wish these tablets were available in the EU or USA
Will never buy from China again

Which of those on which specific tablet?
Nujol
18 Apr 16 1 #26
You're not alone! Basically the difference between this sort of device and an iPad or similar is that this device has little/no quality control of the individual parts or the finished device (plus no Apple margin and so on) - so they can knock them out cheap in the knowledge that there is no comeback.

It does always surprise me the ability of the manufacturers to ALWAYS manage to ensure at least one part of them is dodgy.

And then of course their are the firmware upgrades that almost immediately cease to exist.

There is a lot to be said for a more-expensive-but-branded (even 2nd hand) device compared to these IMHO.

The way I see it is that buying from china is not so different from buying here, you get cheap brands like Alba and bush and they are not great, if you look at the brands that the Chinese buy then you see some patterns. I generally only buy Xiaomi products from china as they are a huge company supplying to India and China. I have a xiaomi phone and it is truly the first phone that has not annoyed me in the 6 months I've had it. their fitness bands, speakers and headphones are also really great. going to try the mi pad tablet next

I haven't fully tested the battery life, but other reviews a gearbest poing out it is not very good. However what I have noticed is that while charging (with 2amp charger) and using the tablet at the same time battery charge is going down... which is strange. This is mainly in Windows, but is probably not much different for Android. Sorry, but I haven't used it extensively other than testing both OSes, updating them, running benchmarks and checking the hardware inside. What I can say is that Wi-Fi is pretty good unlike what and review on the net says (review is only for the Win 10 version).

I really can't stand my 8" Windows tablet... if only you could make the text or fonts bigger it might be OK. I feel better now. I'm typing this on a 4.5" android phone screen by the way! Windows needs to be on a laptop or desktop as far as I'm concerned, it's a miserable experience on a tablet!!!

much better than this?
verbumSapienti
18 Apr 16 1 #37
I agree, and taking the backwards step of plugging in a keyboard and mouse is squintingly miserabler! however, although the UI elements seem tiny you can actually enlarge them by tweaking the display/accessibility settings. also try (freely) updating to win 10 - much more tablet friendly

19 Apr 16 #38
Thanks for saving this from turning into yet another "Cheap Chinese products/anti Gearbest" threads!

I think I recall reading something about a dual boot tablet (can't remember if it was this or one of the Chuwi's) where it charged really slowly in Windows but quicker in Android when the tablet was in use.

When you use this a little more would you mind either pm'ing me or replying to one of my posts on this thread and letting me know how you're finding the battery life and how long it took to charge please?

I want something to take with me when I'm traveling and I need to balance out speed and spec with usability - it doesn't matter how good the battery life is if the tablet can't fulfil the tasks I require of it but it can have the best hardware available but if it runs flat in only 3 or so hours, then it's not much use! So I'm aiming for middle ground - not sure this tablet is it - hopefully the Lenovo works out!
woldranger
19 Apr 16 1 #39
Significantly cheaper and a different size so not really much of a direct comparison. For me, I need something small, so the Linx is no use, but it's most likely to be a better option for a lot of people.

I'm assuming you've tried this work around?
KiretoX
19 Apr 16 #40
Sure, as far as I don't forget, but I will take it for a spin again this week so I will have a check for the battery life. Are you more interested in Windows 10 or Android? I guess you have already checked the reviews over at gearbest - there are more than a few reviews pointing out a weak battery (one says 3 hours w/o specifying which OS).

Can you see this review of mine from Amazon? - https://www.amazon.co.uk/review/R1XOR7O12ZGJ4S/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm

Cheers. It's Windows that I need but having the option to dual boot would be useful. I run a heavily modded Samsung Note 3 but there are a few things that I can't do on Android with my photography so a small, light Windows slate should sort me.

It's hard to be totally specific but I've had the Onda v919w, Chuwi Hi8, Doogee X5 Pro, Cubot X9, another Onda, a Teclast and a couple of generics - they were cheap so I never really got too worked up, but when I wanted something 'reliable' I just kept reaching for an iPad or Sony Xperia Tablet Z.
MrPuddington
19 Apr 16 #46
I have a Teclast tablet, and for the price it is a great piece of kit (mine has 4GB of RAM).

But: support is not existing, the recovery image comes with malware, and installing your own Windows is a big faff.

So please run malwarebytes, and check what it says.

Got myself a Chuwi Hi8. 1080p screen and dual boot O/S for under £60 from Gearbest. Not a thing wrong with it and very happy.

The key thing to do in these situations is research thoroughly before ordering. A lot of frustration and headache can be saved by looking into both the retailer in question and the kind of genuine reviews they get. Personally I have never had a problem with Gearbest. Sure they take 3 weeks to arrive but I can honestly say that everything that has arrived has worked as it should. Like a lot of things, we hear from the complainants but not the people that are happy with their purchases.

To those that are not happy parting with their £60-odd pounds to a Chinese website or feel they will not be happy with their cheap tablet should probably consider something like a locally-sourced iPad. You'll pay 5 times over the odds but you'll probably be happy.

Then i left it on standby and after an hour battery was dead. I guess Win10 may not be very power efficient at standby. I'm now charging it while tablet is off and will let you know how much time will be needed to charge - I'm using Samsung S6 Adaptive charger.

If i'm ordering, whats the best shipping and payment method to use?
woldranger
21 Apr 16 #63
Well that's annoying - it's suppsed to have 3 days and 14 hours left on the promo price as I type this, but it's changed from $70 to 80! Is this a normal gearbest tactic? Curious.

I've expired the deal as the price has gone up. Still not a bad price, but not what it was
nige182
21 Apr 16 #64
It was quantity limited, it clearly said so on the page until they ran out, for some reason the timer remains despite the quantity being gone. Unless the current price is a promo price as well but not as good as it isn't quantity limited.

Just got a chance to give that a shot. That's a massive difference!!! I don't feel the need to use a magnifying glass at all now! it appears that my text was set at 125% but I'm test running 200% for the moment. Might need to knock it down slightly. Thanks for pointing out that tip!

lanc_red
22 Apr 16 #67
Still seems to be same price.....i'll ask again now! whats the best shipping and payment method to use?
woldranger
22 Apr 16 #68
That's odd - back to the "deal" price - how do you go about getting a mod to unexpire - there's still over 2 days left at this price - might be useful for someone.

For the record, I'm gonna stick with my Lenovo Miix 2 8" - but I'm struggling to find a small keyboard or a keyboard case that's not one of those lousy "universal" ones that are massive and badly put together. It seems that Lenovo don't sell the factory keyboards separately.
gtd65

Any links to reviews which may be similar to your experience with it? My main issue with android tablets has been general lag.... How do you find this tablet overall? what are the plus/negatives? Thanks in advance
KiretoX
30 Apr 16 1 #71
I find touch screen lag in Windows 10 to be a bit problematic to me. Touch response in Android however is adequate, its definitely good. My main tablet is Galaxy Tab S and of course there is big difference between both, but considering the CPU and price I think you would be fine with the android performance. Not everything loads right away (for example starting Chrome and browsing), but it is tolerable.
