It's not legal to store petrol in a 20l can. The maximum is 10l for a metal can and 5l for plastic.
edit: My understanding was out of date, the law changed in 2014 - it used to be the maximum size for a petrol containers were 10l for metal and 5l for plastic but now it is 20l for metal and 10l for plastic. Relevant law here.

I keep having issues with Petrol "going off" and messing up the carb on my lawnmower... would a better can prevent that?
Less hoarding, smaller fuel can or mow your lawn more often.

Not true, law is 10litres for a plastic can. Metal cans have no law, but the HSE advice is for max 20litre metal cans
I stand corrected. The legislation was changed in October 2014. No more than 30l to be stored on domestic premises, with maximum 20L volume for metal containers and 10L plastic.

Hmm, didn't realise they included dismountable fuel tanks in the 30L total you are allowed to store, I bet a lot of owners of boats with large outboards are in breach of that law. A mates got two tanks for his 50hp outboard, both are at least 22L, and possibly 30.
