After leaving Sky earlier this year i have been looking at freesat set top boxes.
The Humax HDR1000S has won several awards and is one of the best Freesat boxes out there, only the newer model out muscles this box.

Freeview = digital tv via aerial
YouView = digital tv via aerial + limited catch up via internet + extra channels if you pay BT or TalkTalk
Freesat = digital tv via satellite, more channels than freeview but some freeview channels missing (C4HD+1 not on freesat)
FreeTime = digital tv via satellite + limited catchup via internet.

I bought the 500Gb version a few weeks ago. The 'refurbs' come with new remotes and all accessories (even a 1m hdmi cable). It works well, plays most media from a usb stick (not H265) and can be setup to work of a single satellite dish (1 lnb) feed. It can then record 1 channel and you can watch a recording or watch a limited set of channels depending on which channel you are recording. The remote can also control a lot of tvs so you only need 1 remote.
Only annoying thing is the guide. When you first press guide you get a now and next list. You have to press right twice to get a full guide.
Overall a great freesatHD recorder.

Whats the boot up time like on these. (I suppose there is an eco mode?)

Not sure what your getting to, it has standby yes.
Best to think of it as a Sky Box in that respect. ie will record when in stand by etc.

The boot up time is very slow, it's not like a sky box, it properly powers down when you turn it off.
I have one, it definitely has a few niggles, like it boots into a halfway page between tv guide and a full picture.
That being said, it's ok.

We have one of these, been reliable for a good couple of years but just the last couple of weeks its been playing up, black screen on ITV1 HD most of the time, need to rescan the channels to get it back but it soon goes again, weird thing is when we rescan all our recordings vanish at the same time. Think ours is fudged so will need to splurge on a new one, Humax have a good rep but this is the 2nd Freesat Humax box we have had go wrong.

Thank you for the code, was going to buy one yesterday but didn't get round to it so you've saved me £14 on the model I was after

Good deal with the code, which also works on the HDR-1010S at the same price. I bought this one previously and without the code. Main difference is colour (white) and Wi-Fi capable as well as Ethernet.
so this is the one to go for as it has wifi for the same price? is that right? (still not sure on a white box though...)

If you need wifi, then yes. I personally don't need it as i have network cables etc

Exactly, and why I went for it as it makes for more flexibility. I've had no problems feeding off Wi-Fi thus far, and can always go for Ethernet adapters if I do (the router is at the main BT socket to avoid losses and remote from the TV).
Just some advice for those who are switching to Free-Sat; only go for those Humax boxes listed as suitable for Freesat, as indeed is your old Sky dish if you have one (Freesat feeds from the same satellite group). Unless it was fitted up for HD+ you will need an adapter kit consisting of a quad LNB and the required length of additional Coax so that the dual tuners in the box can be separately fed. They are easily found on Ebay and I found the process fairly straight forward.
Two points, note the "skew" (tilt) angle of the old LNB before removing it, and checkout how to ID the mark of your Sky Dish. If it is not the latest (Mk4) then you'll need a different LNB adapter to fit the new LNB to the dish (my kit had both included).
Finally you can replace your old cable with a "shotgun" dual Coax cable for neatness sake if you wish. Also if you set up your new STB (set top box) before you upgrade the dish it will work, but can only record/view on one channel. When you later carry out the upgrade you will have to do a factory reset on the STB so that it will then use both tuners (you won't lose your recordings).
The most tricky part was extracting the old LNB adapter from the arm on my Mk3 dish (The mark4 adapter fits over the Mk4 arm and is far more straight forward). It is held within the arm by two press studs either side of the arm which have to be held in simultaneously. Luckily I found a scissor like device among my old tools that did the trick. Never did know what it was for, but I do now!

One thing to note: Remove any usb drives from the device before trying a factory reset!!! A factory reset wont work with usb drives plugged in and gives no errors or warnings that it wont reset.
This took me about 1 hr of head scratching before I called the support line. They didn't even know about the usb issue on factory reset for a box setup as a single cable box.
So if you setup as single cable and subsequently go to dual cable remove all usb devices before factory reset!!!!

Good tip ched99UK. I didn't have a usb drive fitted, but nonetheless had to work out why the box still refused to work properly having fitted both Coax feeds, until it dawned that it was stuck in a single feed mode. Given that many will be fitting these boxes to old Sky dish feeds, I think that Humax should emphasise the need for a reset if set up on a single feed prior to being dual fed, as well as of your usb conflict.

If you're technical then you can upgrade the hard disk to 2tb for storing more programmes.
The Freesat boxes use the same satellite as Sky so if you've had Sky+ then you can just bin the Sky box and plug the Freesat in as a replacement. Loads of friends have done this now that they have Netflix or Amazon Prime. These days Sky's only really worth it if you're a sports obsessive.

Anyone here thought about the zgemma boxes instead?
They are popular with expats, as many download/catchup services are location-limited (and in a constant arms race with vpn providers...). And recordings are not time-limited, should you want to watch it again, much later.

We bought the white 1010 wifi model last month as an upgrade for the old Foxsat box we had.
To be honest we've not recorded any programmes on it yet as you can watch anything you miss on the built in catch up services.
